ODAC Players of the Week - Week 34

FOREST, Va. --- The regular season is winding down with two championships in the books and three more slated for this weekend. ODAC athletes continue to perform at high levels, giving fans an idea of what to expect when the hardware is on the line. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, top-to-bottom left-to-right): Matthew Moody from Hampden-Sydney tennis, Georgia Wright from Washington and Lee women's tennis, Haley Tucker and A.J. Witherell from W&L women's and men's lacrosse, Chase Counts from H-SC baseball, Mackenzie Chitwood from Lynchburg softball, Andrew Earvolino from W&L baseball, Hanna Hull from Virginia Wesleyan softball, and James Mishoe from Guilford men's golf.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Andrew Earvolino | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Pitcher
Earvolino, a senior from Wilmette, Ill., helped the Generals to a pair of victories with two relief appearances in conference road games. Earvolino's first outing was a highlight effort in a 6-5 win at Bridgewater. He entered the game trailing, 2-0, with nobody out and the bases. Not only did he registered three straight outs, but he went on to toss a career-high innings. Earvolino surrendered one unearned run while scattering five hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned six. Earvolino also worked an inning in a 12-11 win at Emory & Henry, giving up one run and striking out a batter. For the season, Earvolino has made 11 appearances, all in relief. He has struck out 12 batters and owns a 3.06 ERA in 17.2 innings of work.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chase Counts | Hampden-Sydney | Jr. | 2nd Base
Counts, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., brought out his power bat to help Hampden-Sydney to a 2-1 week. Counts slashed .600/.667/1.467 as he went 9-for-15 with a double, four homers, three walks, nine RBI, and nine runs scored. He opened with a 4-for-5 day in an 11-3 win over Lynchburg. He drove in a run and scored three times to go with a double and a steal. In a split with Shenandoah, Counts belted two homers in game one to go with four RBI and three runs scored in a 20-6 victory. He left the yard two more times in game two, driving in a pair and scoring three more runs in a 17-14 setback. He walked three times in that series. For the season, Counts is fifth in the ODAC with a .378 average and fourth with a .615 slugging percentage. He is first in runs scored (39) and total bases (83), second in hits (51), and third in homeruns (7). He is ninth with 29 RBI.

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
James Mishoe | Guilford | Jr.
Mishoe, a junior from Cary, N.C., took on some of the nation's best players at the Discover Dekalb Emory Invitational over the weekend and finished in a tie for second place in a field of 82 players at the Smoke Rise Country Club in Tucker, Ga. Mishoe, the top-rated golfer in NCAA Division III by Golfstat, opened with an even-par 71 on the 6,535-yard layout. He followed with a 1-over 72 before closing with a second 71 for a 1-over 214, three shots back of Stephen Shephard from nationally second-ranked Huntingdon. Mishoe's efforts helped nationally sixth-ranked Guilford to third place in a field that featured seven teams ranked inside the top-21 in the country. The Quakers shot 28-over 880 (287-301-292), including a tournament team-low tying 287 in the first round.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
A.J. Witherell | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Attackman
Witherell, a senior from Wilmington, Del., helped lead Washington and Lee to a pair of ODAC victories including an overtime triumph over nationally 20th-ranked Lynchburg. The week started for the 17th-ranked Generals at Virginia Wesleyan. Witherell scored twice and dished out two assists in a 15-5 win. He added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Witherell then went for three points on a goal and two assists, including the game-winning helper in overtime, for a 10-9 triumph over Lynchburg. He chipped in four ground balls to the effort. For the season, Witherell is fifth in the ODAC in points (60) and assists (27) to go with 33 goals scored. He is currently fourth all-time in ODAC history with 294 career points. His 178 goals and 116 assists rank seventh and sixth, respectively, in the conference record books.

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Matthew Moody | Hampden-Sydney | Jr.
Moody, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., led the Tigers to a pair of key ODAC victories as the regular season end draws near. Moody went a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Hamdpen-Sydney toppled Guilford, 8-1, and Bridgewater, 9-0. Moody earned a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 10-1 decision over GC's Mason Robb in one singles match, while he again went three sets to take down BC's Canon Secord, 7-5, 3-6, 10-3. Matthew and his brother Michael churned out an 8-6 doubles win over the Quakers top duo of Mason Rob and Elijah Gregory, and earned an 8-3 triumph over BC's Second and Matthew Gordon.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hanna Hull | Virginia Wesleyan | Jr. | Pitcher
Hull, a junior from Chesterfield, Va., improved to 22-1 with two conference wins last week. She also became the first pitcher in ODAC history and 25th in the NCAA Division III record books to crack 1,000 career strikeouts. She fanned 24 this week, pushing career total to 1,005 punchouts in just short of three seasons. Hull opened her week with a 9-1 win over Shenandoah in five innings. She gave up one run on three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. The run was just her sixth overall and fourth earned run allowed against conference competition this season. Hull was even better in a 5-0 no-hit shutout over Ferrum. She was one hit-batter away from a perfect game as she struck out 15 Panthers for her 13th double figure strikeout game of the season. Hull currently leads the country in wins (22), strikeouts per seven innings (14.0), and ERA (0.38). She's second with 257 strikeouts.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mackenzie Chitwood | Lynchburg | Sr. | 1st Base
Chitwood, a senior from Ferrum, Va., is now just three homeruns away from tying the ODAC single-season record after cracking two more in a sweep of Eastern Mennonite last week. Chitwood, who slashed .667/.750/1.667 in the series, hammered a three-run homer to set the tone in the first inning of an 8-3 victory in game one. She added a to her line. In game two, the Hornets first baseman went 3-for-3 including a two-run homer on the way to three RBI and a 7-2 triumph. Chitwood's ODAC-best 14 homers are currently ranked #2 in NCAA Division III. She also leads the ODAC in total bases (102) and is second in RBI (53) and slugging (.836). She is fourth with 48 hits. Her RBI total and slugging percentage are both ranked third in the country.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Haley Tucker | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Midfielder
Tucker, a senior from Manakin-Sabot, Va., was a force on both sides of the field as nationally top-ranked Washington and Lee returned to action with a pair of league games following its exam week. Tucker opened with six points on five goals and an assist in a 22-3 win over Bridgewater. She added eight draw controls, a ground ball, and a caused turnover to her line. Over the weekend, Tucker added four goals and an assist to a career-high 13 draw controls in a 25-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan. She tacked on two ground balls and five draw controls. For the season, Tucker leads the ODAC in goals (51) and draw controls (82), while ranking second in points (67). Here 82 draw controls are fourth-best in W&L history.

WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Georgia Wright | Washington and Lee | Fy.
Wright, a first-year from Ausitn Texas, helped the 22nd-ranked Generals to a 4-1 overall record last week, including a 4-0 mark in ODAC play, by going 3-1 in doubles and 4-0 in singles matches. Wright and Taylor Garcia teamed up in No. 1 doubles in four of the team's five matches, and defeated Roanoke's Jessica Kennedy and Madeline Herring, 8-1, Emory & Henry's Katie Meade and Kaitlyn Sheaves, 8-0, and Bridgewater's Whitney Kiser and Nicole Shifflett, 8-3. Their lone loss of the week came at No. 10 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, when they fell, 8-1, to the second-ranked duo of Danna Taylor and Melissa Strome. In singles, Wright downed E&H's Sheaves, 6-0, 6-0, and RC's Carolyn Kitsock, 6-0, 6-1, both in the No. 2 slot. She then earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kiser in No. 1 singles, before ending her week with a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8) win over CMU's Vinaya Rao in No. 3 singles. Wright now owns a 12-6 overall singles record this season, the most singles wins on the team, and is 12-7 in all doubles matches, including a 9-5 mark with Garcia as her partner.
