Leonard Nets a Both Goals in Dramatic Style

SPRINGFIELD, Va. --- Sophomore attack Lindsay Leonard (pictured - Yorktown, VA/Grafton) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the #18 Lynchburg College field hockey team upset Messiah College (PA), the top ranked team in NCAA Division III, 2-1 Wednesday evening. The game was played at West Springfield High School.

Juliana Hershey scored at the 31:05 mark of the first half to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead they would hold until the closing minutes. Leonard put the ball in the cage with just 3:13 left on the game clock to force overtime, and delivered the winning goal as well off a penalty corner with 4:22 left in OT.

Messiah out-shot LC 23-13 and held a 14-7 edge in penalty corners, but LC had the only corner in the extra period. Junior goalie Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) continued her outstanding play in the cage with 15 saves, and senior Caitlin Gibb (Northeast, MD/Rising Sun) made a defensive save in overtime to save the day.
