Weir's Goal Sends LC to Round Two

Hornets Take on Messiah on Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Senior attack Jenny Weir (pictured) scored the game's only goal Wednesday as the Lynchburg College field hockey team defeated Christopher Newport University 1-0 in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament.

LC held a slight 11-8 edge in shots in the first half, but neither team could break into the scoring column. Weir scored on a cross from junior Christina Morris (Stafford, VA/Mountain View) at 42:34 to break the scoreless tie. For the game, LC held a 17-14 advantage in shots while CNU had an 8-6 edge in penalty corners.  The Hornet defense withstood three CNU corners after the game clock had expired.

Junior Tiffany Frye (picture below - Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) was spectacular in net, making 10 saves for the Hornets. Brittany Bradsher made seven stops for the 10th-ranked Lady Captains (15-4).

The 11th-ranked Hornets avenge an early season 1-0 loss at Christopher Newport.

Lynchburg (19-3) advances to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and travels to top-ranked Messiah College this weekend. The Hornets will face Messiah Saturday in one second round match in Grantham, PA, while Salisbury University and Rhodes College play at 2 p.m. The two winners square off Sunday at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the Final Four. LC handed Messiah one of its two losses earlier in the year with a 2-1 overtime victory.
