Hornets Take on Messiah on Saturday
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Senior attack Jenny Weir
(pictured) scored the game's only goal Wednesday as the Lynchburg
College field hockey team defeated Christopher Newport University
1-0 in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division III
Tournament.
LC held a slight 11-8 edge in shots in the first half, but neither
team could break into the scoring column. Weir scored on a cross
from junior Christina Morris (Stafford, VA/Mountain View) at 42:34
to break the scoreless tie. For the game, LC held a 17-14 advantage
in shots while CNU had an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. The
Hornet defense withstood three CNU corners after the game clock had
expired.
Junior Tiffany Frye (picture below - Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) was
spectacular in net, making 10 saves for the Hornets. Brittany
Bradsher made seven stops for the 10th-ranked Lady
Captains (15-4).
The 11th-ranked Hornets avenge an early season 1-0 loss at
Christopher Newport.
Lynchburg (19-3) advances to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament
and travels to top-ranked Messiah College this weekend. The Hornets
will face Messiah Saturday in one second round match in Grantham,
PA, while Salisbury University and Rhodes College play at 2 p.m.
The two winners square off Sunday at 1 p.m. for the right to
advance to the Final Four. LC handed Messiah one of its two losses
earlier in the year with a 2-1 overtime victory.
