LC Falls to Mary Washington in NCAA Field Hockey Quarterfinals

Hornets Close Season with 19-4 Overall Record

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- The Lynchburg College field hockey team took an early lead but Mary Washington fought back, scoring with under ten minutes remaining to end the Hornets' season 3-2 in the NCAA Division III field hockey national quarterfinals held Sunday at Mary Washington.

The score was the same as the regular season matchup when LC fell to the Eagles 3-2 on September 8.

Sophomore Katie Kline started the scoring for the Hornets a little over six minutes into the game. Lynchburg came out very aggressively making three shots before Kline got off her stroke.

The Eagle keeper was drawn out of the cage several times early on as Mary Washington made defensive saves on shots by senior co-captain Lindsay Leonard and Kline before the go-ahead goal.

Mary Washington tied it up seven minutes later when Lisa Charney took the ball from Caitlin Baker for her sixteenth goal of the season. Florence George scored for the Eagles two and a half minutes later to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.

LC kept the pressure up in the first half, putting four shots on goal in the final twenty minutes of the half. Keeper Claire Gianelle made saves on all four shots to keep the advantage at 2-1 going into the half.

The second half started as a defensive struggle with neither team scoring until the 56thminute. Senior Johanna Agustin sent the ball in to Leonard who put it away for the tie.

Baker put the dagger into the Hornets five minutes later, scoring the game-winning goal. Kline had a penalty corner late in the half but the Eagles were able to defend it to preserve the win.

Mary Washington outshot LC 14-12 and had an advantage in corners 10-7. Hannah Myers made three saves for the Hornets. Gianelle finished with five saves while the Eagles made three defensive stops.

Lynchburg ends the season with a record of 19-4.
