Hornets Shutout Messiah to Advance in NCAA Tournament

Lynchburg to Face Mary Washington on Sunday

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- The seniors stepped up again for the Lynchburg College field hockey team as the Hornets ended Messiah's season with a 2-0 victory Saturday afternoon.

Senior co-captain Shelly Milks got LC on the board fifteen minutes into the match as she took the ball to the cage for the first goal of the game.

The score stayed 1-0 as Messiah continued to pressure the Hornet defense. The Falcons forced junior goalkeeper Hannah Myers to make all four of her saves without the luxury of an insurance goal.

Lynchburg got the goal it needed to put the game away with twelve minutes left to play. Senior Ashley Nelson received the ball in the cage and placed the ball perfectly past keeper Molly Gebrosky. Milks assisted on the score.

LC was outshot by Messiah 13-11 but made the most of the shots it took. The Falcons also had the advantage in penalty corners, 10-5. Gebrosky made six saves for Messiah.

The win pits the Hornets against Mary Washington in a rematch from the regular season game after the Eagles beat Eastern 3-1 in the earlier NCAA contest. LC lost the previous game to Mary Washington 3-2 in early September.

The Hornets will play the Eagles in Fredericksburg on Sunday. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Final Four held in Geneva, NY. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
