Centre Defeats Lynchburg in NCAA Field Hockey First Round

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Cole Jordan scored the game winner eight minutes into overtime to lift Centre College to a 2-1 victory over Lynchburg College Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Shellenberger Field.

After a scoreless first half, LC got on the board early in the second period. Junior Kayla Krause inserted a pass in front of the net into a crowd of players and freshman Karissa LaMaire deflected it to Taylor Quillen and into the cage.

Centre answered 15 minutes later as Hayley Barker dribbled past the LC keeper to tie the score at one at 56:30. Neither team could win the game in regulation.

Overtime in collegiate field hockey consists of two 15 minute periods of seven-on-seven play, with the first goal ending the contest. After nearly eight minutes of even play, Jordan took a centering pass from Erin Mays at the 77:52 mark to end the game.

Lynchburg outshot CC 12-9 and held an 11-5 edge in penalty corners. Centre's Kirby Roberts and LC'sBeka Hess each had four saves.

Centre (16-7) moves on to the round of 16 and will travel to Salisbury University this weekend for second and third round action. The Colonels will square off with Salisbury, the #1 ranked team in NCAA Division III at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Lynchburg ends the 2014 season with a 15-7 record and earned the program's ninth consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title and 10th-straight NCAA Tournament berth.
