GC's Gross Wins Division III Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award

Honor Presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Tanner Gross of Guilford College has been named recipient of the Phil Mickelson Outstandng Freshman Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf.  Gross is the first Quaker and ODAC student-athlete to win the honor.

Gross claimed two victories this season - a tie for first at the ODAC Championship and the top spot in a dual versus Greensboro College. He also tallied six additional top 10 finishes and only placed outside the top 20 three times in 12 events. Gross was previously named ODAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-ODAC.

This weekend at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, carded rounds of 73 and 78 to finish 7-over par before the Quakers were elminated by the second round cut.  Combined with his earlier season results, Gross finished his rookie campaign with a 74.44 per round average, good enough for third in the ODAC.
