H-SC's Burt Finishes Fifth at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Hampden-Sydney College junior Brian Burt completed the 2014 NCAA Division III Golf Championships in fifth place at 3-over par (291).  He played 22 holes on Friday as weather forced the suspension of action on Thursday, requiring many players to finish their third rounds before jumping into the final round at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C.

University of Redlands junior Bobby Holden claimed the individual crown at 9-under par, carding rounds of 71-69-69-70 (279) to win by nine strokes over Cheyne Kendall (E, 288) from Schreiner University.  Kendall wouldn't go home without hardware, however, as the Mountaineers captured the program's first national team crown at 33-over par (285-293-302-305---1185).  SU defeated Oglethorpe University (+38; 1190) by five strokes.

Burt, from Holt, Mich., carried the ODAC banner over the final 36 holes following the cut after round two.  Both teammate Rick O'Connell and Guilford College's squad saw their season's come to a close by the end of Wednesday.

The leader after 36 holes, Burt started his championship experience with a 5-under 67 on the 6,770-yard West Course.  He followed that with a 3-under 69 on the longer East Course, which measured 7,210 yards.  The East Course provided the setting for the final two rounds, but weather added another variable to Thursday's new pin placements.

Tournament organizers, which included co-hosts Guilford College and the Greensboro Sports Commission, did their best to avoid the heavy rains that eventually soaked the course by moving play up an hour, but most players were forced to cut short their activity on Thursday.

That group included Burt, who made it thru 14 holes before stopping.  His success didn't carryover from the first two rounds as he was 8-over with a pair of double bogeys on #6 and #9 prior to the halt in action.  He capped his third round on Friday morning with four pars on the way to an 80, which put him back where he started the tournament at even-par.

Burt opened the final 18 holes with a bogey on #1, but rebounded with back-to-back birdies on #6 and #7.  He had a love-hate relationship all week with the 555-yard par-5 sixth thanks to three birdies paired with a double bogey.  Burt finished the front-nine with a bogey, leaving him even-par for the round and tournament with nine holes to play.

Burt parred #10 for the fourth time this week, but then bogeys at #11, #12, #15 and #16 set him back to 3-over.  He walked off the course on a high-note after reaching the 570-yard par-5 18th in two for at least the second time on the week, albeit this time with a 50-foot eagle putt awaiting him.  He cozied the ball to within two feet of the cup from the upper-tier of the large green, leaving him only a formality before knocking home his 13th birdie of the championship and a 3-over 75 for the fourth round.
