HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- ODAC champion and nationally ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University opened play at the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship tied for 15th following 18 holes on the El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., on Tuesday.

The Generals five-person team of Megan Kanaby -- the ODAC Player of the Year -- Marcella Mercer, An Shelmire, Julia Haetzel -- the ODAC individual medalist -- and Laetitia Roegner posted a 42-over round of 334 to tie with Amherst College in the team standings that features 29 teams. Roegner paced W&L at 9-over par 82 on the par-73 track set to 5,823 yards.

Shelmire posted a 10-over 83, while Kanaby and Mercer completed the Generals scoring four players with rounds of 84 and 85, respectively. Haetzel carded a round of 89.

Nationally second-ranked Emory University topped the team leader by three strokes over #4 George Fox University at 23-over 315. Third-ranked Washington University in St. Louis and fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellow University are four back at 27-over 319.

The individual leaderboard is also tightly packed. Nina McMurtrey from Centre College carded a 1-over 74 to lead by one stroke over Sydney Kuo from Wash-U, Hannah Jugar from the University of Redlands, and Catalin Yturralde from Williams College. A total of 151 players make up the 2023 competition field.

All players in the field will complete 54 holes of the scheduled 72 over the first three rounds of the tournament. After round three, the field will be cut to the top-15 teams and six individuals not on those teams for the final round of competition. The NCAA will honor both the top finishing team and individual player as national champions.
