Pettersson Joins Davidson in Top-10, W&L Moves Up at NCAA Men's Golf

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. --- Averett University's Max Pettersson fired the second-best round of the day to join Guilford College's Sam Davidson in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard following 54 holes of competition at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships hosted by Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.

Pettersson's 3-under 69 tied for the second-lowest round of the day as all players competed on the Champion Trace course, set to 6,974 yards at par 72. Pettersson went out at even-par 36 with three birdies on the back-nine helping him come in at 33. His 3-under 69 moved him to 2-under 214 for the tournament, thied for fourth with David Zhang from Carnegie Mellon University -- who carded the best round (67) of the day -- and Guilford's Davidson. The ODAC individual medalist carded three birdies against three bogeys and 12 pars for an even-round of 72.

Guilford fell back one spot from where it started the day to sit eighth after three rounds at 14-over 878. The Quakers shot 10-over 298 on Thursday afternoon. Washington and Lee University improved seven places in the team standings from the last team to make the cut in 18th position to 11th place by the end of round three. The Generals shot 4-over 292 to leave them at 22-over 886 for the tournament.

All 10 competing players for Guilford and Washington and Lee shot no higher than 78 on Thursday. Guilford's Michael Vick sits in a tie for 11th at 1-over 271 following a 74 on Thursday. Teammates Evan Mendyk and James Alden posted a pair of 76's to sit tied for 47th (223) and tied for 69th (227), respectively. Parker Cumbea shot 78 for a very good drop score in round three. He is tied for 72nd at 228.

For W&L, Will Braxton went under-par on Thursday at 1-under 71. He is tied for 30th at 220. Owen Malcolm shot an even par 72 to leave him at 218 and tied for 18th overall. Walker McPhail and Cannon Crane posted the remaining two scoring rounds for the Generals at 74 and 75. They are tied for 60th (225) and tied for 85th (232) respectively. Pierce Robinson ended his day with a 77 to sit in a tie for 79th overall at 229.

Methodist University remains in the lead as the Monarchs own a four-stroke advantage of Piedmont University. Methodist is even for the tournament at 864, while the Lions are 4-over at 868. Methodist posted the round of the day at 3-over 291, one stroke better than W&L and Rensselaer Polytechnic (RPI), which is third overall at 870.

Christopher Newport University's Robb Kinder stands atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under 211 following a 2-under round of 70 on day three. He is one stroke clear of Cameron Cappuzzo from Methodist and Bobby Beaubien from Illinois Wesleyan University.
