ODAC Golfers of the Week

FOREST, Va. --- Week 33 marks the final report for ODAC men's and women's golf with the conference championships for both sports on tap for the next week plus beginning with this weekend's men's event. League teams participated in a handful of tournaments over the past week with several top-10 finishes. Those earning ODAC Golfer of the Week awards for Wednesday, April 19, are Averett University junior Antti Vahvaselka and University of Lynchburg junior Emily Brubaker.

Below are entries for each of the winners from today's release. The schedule below will be used for reporting ODAC Athletes of the Week:

  • Mondays: baseball, lacrosse, softball, tennis
  • Tuesdays: outdoor track & field
  • Wednesdays: m/w golf

MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Antti Vahvaselka | Averett | Jr.
Vahvaselka, a junior from Helsinki, Finland, was the top Averett and ODAC finisher in a strong field at the Emory Spring Invitational hosted by Emory University at Cherokee Run Golf Course in Conyers, Ga. Vahvaselk capped his effort six shots behind medalist Jackson Klutznick from the host Eagles at 7-over 223 following three rounds on the par 72 layout set to 6,905 yards. He opened with a 4-over 76 that included one birdie and improved by three strokes over his second 18 holes with a 1-over 73 that featured four birdies. He closed the event with a 2-over 74 that included a pair of birdies and an eagle on the par-5 555-yard 18th hole. Vahvaselk finished second in the field in par-4 scoring (+2, 4.07), helping nationally 19th-ranked Averett to third in the team standings at 54-over 918 (305-306-307). Top-ranked Emory won the event at 33-over 897. Vahvaselka closes the regular season fifth in the ODAC in scoring average at 73.2 over 20 rounds of action. He is currently ranked 15th in the Division III by Golfstat.

WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Emily Brubaker | Lynchburg | Jr.
Brubaker, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., led Lynchburg to a runner-up finish to close its regular season at the Spartan Invitational hosted by York College (Pa.) at the Regents Glen Country Club in York, Pa. Brubaker tied for second overall with Natalie Robson from York at 10-over 154, seven shots back of medalist Casey Oppenheimer from Stevenson University. Brubaker opened with a 2-over 74 on the par-72 layout set to 5,714 yards. She eagled the par-5 440-yard 16th hole -- one of only two eagles for the tournament -- to go with 13 pars. She carded an 8-over 80 in the final round that included 11 more pars. Brubaker was second in the field in par-4 scoring (+4, 4.20), helping the Hornets finish just three strokes back of the host Spartans at 77-over 653 (321-332). Brubaker closes the regular season fourth in the ODAC in scoring average at 77.2 over 16 rounds of competition. She is currently ranked 46th in Division III by Golfstat.
