LC Scores Four Times in Fourth to Secure Date with Roanoke in Second Round

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team staged a huge fourth-quarter comeback to rally for a 6-5 victory over visiting St. Mary's College (MD) in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.

Lynchburg did not take long to put the first goal on the board as Todd Galvin connected for the Hornets less than five minutes into the game. The Seahawks would settle in from that point on, allowing numerous Hornet shots, but Lynchburg was held scoreless in the final 25 minutes of the first half.

St. Mary's Ben Love evened the game at one with a laser past Adam Davey with 4:15 to play in the first period. Patrick Mull made sure the Seahawks had a lead after one, sending his shot to the back of the net with 16 seconds remaining in the first period.

More Seahawks would get in on the action in the second quarter as Tim Perugini found Nate Babcock in front of the net for another goal, extending the St. Mary's lead to 3-1 as the first half wound to a close.

Vin Curran cut the lead to 3-2 with an unassisted tally 13 seconds into the second half. The Seahawks extended the lead with back-to-back goals in the third from Love and Patrick Mull.

LC fought off a man-down chance to start the fourth quarter to keep the deficit at three before the offense got going. Curran scored at 12:56 and Jay Goldsmith tacked on another goal a minute later to cut the lead to 5-4. Max Voumard tied the game with 9:35 on the game clock and goalie Adam Davey kept momentum squarely in LC's corner with two tough saves to keep the score tied. Curran posted the game-winner at 6:30 after a shot fake gave him a window through the SMC defense.

Davey made another outstanding save with 2:13 remaining and the Hornets ran out the clock to end the game.

LC out-shot its guests 40-26, while Albert Mitchell took all 14 face-offs for the Seahawks and helped St. Mary's win 10. Scott Marsh made 10 stops while Davey saved eight shots. Neither squad could convert on man-up opportunities, with SMC going 0-4 and LC going 0-2.

Lynchburg (13-5) advances into the tournament's second round to square off with Roanoke College, a 21-4 winner over Centre College earlier Wednesday. The contest will take place Saturday, with the time to be determined.
