Lynchburg Joined by Roanoke, W&L in NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Field

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Not one...not two...but THREE teams will carry the ODAC banner into the Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Sunday evening. ODAC champion University of Lynchburg, owners of the conference's automatic entry to the field, will be joined by at-large selections Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University.

Like Lynchburg, 27 of the tourney's 38 programs received automatic qualification from their respective conferences. One school earned a "Pool B" bid as an independent team or squad that competes in a league that does not feature automatic NCAA qualification. The remaining 10 teams received at-large bids from "Pool C," which includes all teams that did not receive AQ or Pool B entries. It is from the latter pool that Roanoke and Washington and Lee earned their selections from the Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Committee.

While ODAC schools have been popular hosting grounds in the early rounds of the tournament, all three league members will hit the road to start their NCAA postseasons. Each, however, did earn byes through the first round.

Lynchburg (15-4) and Roanoke (13-6) appear in the lower-left quadrant of the bracket, but are in separate pods leading to the quarterfinals. Washington and Lee (12-6) is opposite both ODAC compatriots in the lower-right quadrant.

The Hornets travel to New York for second and third round play at Union College. Lynchburg will square off with Western New England College. The Golden Bears (14-5) are automatic qualifiers from the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The opponent for Union (14-2) has yet to be determined. The Dutchmen, recipients of an at-large bid after falling in the semifinals of the Liberty League tournament, will meet either John Carroll University (Ohio) or North Central College (Ill.). The Blue Streaks (16-2), winners of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) AQ, will host the first round game against the Cardinals (9-7), automatic entrants from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).

In a perfect world in this bracket, Lynchburg and Roanoke would both advance to the quarterfinals, where they would square off for a spot in the semifinals. The Maroons path to that possible matchup starts at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. Roanoke will meet Gettysburg in the second round. The Bullets (12-7) received an at-large bid after falling to Dickinson, 10-9 in overtime, in the Centennial Conference championship game. The host Red Devils (18-0) will meet either Stevens Institute of Technology (12-7) or SUNY Maritime (11-7) in their first game. The Ducks will host the Privateers during the midweek. Stevens earned its spot after winning the MAC Freedom Conference championship, while Maritime won the Skyline Conference title.

That perfect world would get even brighter if either Lynchburg or Roanoke were to meet Washington and Lee in the title game. On the opposite side of the bracket, the Generals travel to 2021 runner-up Salisbury University for early round play. W&L meets Cabrini University in the second round. The Cavaliers (15-4) won the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) crown by a 25-5 margin over second-seeded Marymount University. Pod-host Salisbury (18-1) must await the identity of its opponent. The Sea Gulls, despite winning the C2C title, earned an at-large bid with the C2C not owing an automatic entry and the Pool "B" spot handed out to Christopher Newport University. Salisbury will face either Stockton University or University of Massachusetts-Boston. The Ospreys (16-2), winners of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) title, will host the Beacons (17-2) in the first round. UMASS-Boston won the Little East Conference (LEC) crown.

Tournament play begins on Wednesday, May 11, with first round action. The second and third rounds are set for Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15. The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22.

The national championship game will be played in conjunction with the Division II championship and the Division I final four at Rentschler Field in Hartford, Conn., just outside the UCONN campus. The Division II and III title games will be on Sunday, May 29, with the Division I semifinals and championship surrounding them on Saturday and Monday, May 28 and May 30.

Game times and ticket information will be announced later this week. For more information, visit the websites of any of the participating schools.
