2019 Men's Tennis Players of the Week

  • Grant Sarver, Randolph-Macon, Jr.
    April 29, 2019
    Sarver, a junior from Richmond, Va., put together a 3-1 record between doubles and singles play that included a singles victory over the 12th-ranked player in the ITA's South Atlantic Region. Sarver started his week with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #1 singles to make up for an 8-4 loss at #1 doubles with Ryan Aud in the Yellow Jackets 7-2 win over Lynchburg. He and Aud collected a point in R-MC's 5-0 win over Shenandoah with an 8-7 (8-6) decision at #1 doubles. Sarver then capped his week with a three-set extended point win over W&L's Harry Shepherd, the 12th-rated player in the region. Sarver won that match 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) to account for R-MC's point in an 8-1 setback to the Generals.
  • Matthew Moody, Hampden-Sydney, Jr.
    April 22, 2019
    Moody, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., led the Tigers to a pair of key ODAC victories as the regular season end draws near. Moody went a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Hamdpen-Sydney toppled Guilford, 8-1, and Bridgewater, 9-0. Moody earned a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 10-1 decision over GC's Mason Robb in one singles match, while he again went three sets to take down BC's Canon Secord, 7-5, 3-6, 10-3. Matthew and his brother Michael churned out an 8-6 doubles win over the Quakers top duo of Mason Rob and Elijah Gregory, and earned an 8-3 triumph over BC's Second and Matthew Gordon.

    Robb, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., picks up his first weekly award of the season after helping Guilford to a pair of ODAC team wins to increase the Quakers winning streak to six straight matches. Robb went a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, the latter with partner Elijah Gregory. In a 9-0 win over Roanoke, Robb won 6-3, 6-0 in singles play and joined Gregory for an 8-0 in doubles action. The duo won 8-1 as part of a 9-0 victory over Emory & Henry, with Robb claiming a 6-3, 6-1 in his singles matchup.
  • Joe Horne, Guilford, Jr.

    Horne, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., helped the Quakers pick up four ODAC team victories by going a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles play. Horne partnered with Jay Montague at #2 doubles in each. In a 5-4 team win over Randolph-Macon, the duo enjoyed an 8-1 doubles triumph. They won 8-6 to help GC to an 8-1 victory over Lynchburg. The pair were back at it in another nailbiter with their 8-3 doubles win contributing to a 5-4 team triumph over Bridgewater. Guilford topped Roanoke 9-0 in the final match of the week, picking a point from Horne and Montague after they won 8-3 in doubles play. In singles action at the third position, Horne recovered for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win against R-MC. He picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lynchburg and followed with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory against BC. Horne capped his week with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Roanoke.
  • Mitchell Thomas, Washington and Lee, Jr.

    Thomas, a junior from Houma, La., helped lead the Washington and Lee men's tennis team to a 3-0 week against ODAC competition by producing a 3-0 record at No. 2&3 singles and a 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles. He won all of his singles matches in straight sets, playing No. 3 singles against Bridgewater (6-0, 6-3) and then No. 2 singles against Roanoke (6-2, 6-0) and Hampden-Sydney (6-4, 6-1). He also went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles while teaming with first-year Bobby Neuner. The duo posted 8-3, 8-1, and 8-5 victories, respectively. For the year, Thomas is 8-5 in singles and 11-3 in doubles action.

    Fishwick, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., helped the Maroons to a 1-1 team record against ODAC foes last week as he went 4-0 overall including 2-0 at #2 singles and 2-0 at #1 doubles. Fishwick was in on both of Roanoke's points in a 7-2 setback to Randolph-Macon. He won 6-0, 6-3 over Jacob Haines at #2 singles and teamed with Grayson White for an 8-4 win at #1 doubles. Fishwick again accounted for two points in a 5-4 team triumph over Emory & Henry. He won 6-2, 6-1 over Archer Marlow at #2 singles and joined White for an 8-2 victory at #1 doubles.
  • Archer Marlow, Emory & Henry, Fy.
    March 18, 2019
    Marlow, a first-year from Oak Ridge, Tenn., led Emory & Henry to a trio of team wins by going 6-0 between doubles and singles play last week. Marlow won three times at #2 singles and combined with Cooper Garrett for one win at #1 doubles and two more and #2 doubles. In a 6-3 victory over William Peace, Marlow earned a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 comeback victory in singles play and joined Garrett for an 8-0 win at #2 doubles. In a pair of 9-0 wins over Ohio Christian and Johnson, Marlow won 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1 in singles play and joined Garrett for an 8-2 win at #1 doubles and an 8-4 triumph at #2 doubles, respectively. 
  • Alex Fedor, Washington and Lee, Fy.
    March 11, 2019
    Fedor, a first-year from Salem, Ore., went 2-0 in singles action and 1-1 in doubles matches to help Washington and Lee to a 1-1 team week. Fedor played at #1 singles in an 8-1 triumph over Guilford. He picked up a 2-6, 7-6(4), 10-7 win over Mason Robb in singles play. He then partnered with Tye Loan on an 8-7(3) victory at #3 doubles over Logan Glass and Tim Thompson. In the Generals second match of the week, a 7-2 setback to nationally 21st-ranked Johns Hopkins, Fedor posted a 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-6 win over Scott Thygesen at #2 singles. He and Loan felled 8-4 at #3 doubles. Fedor is now 5-2 in singles action and 4-3 in doubles play on the year.
  • Paul Gladstone, Virginia Wesleyan, Sr.

    Gladstone, a senior from Port Orange, Fla., helped lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 9-0 team victory over Emory & Henry. Gladstone posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brandon McGuire at #1 singles, his first of the season. He joined Mike Portera for an 8-4 victory over Archer Marlow and Andrew McClung at #2 doubles. 
  • Harry Shepherd, Washington and Lee, Jr.
    February 25, 2019
    Shepherd, a junior from New York, N.Y., helped Washington and Lee to a 2-1 week with a 4-2 overall record including 3-0 in singles play. Shepherd earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at #1 singles over Darian and joined John Rudden for an 8-5 win at #1 doubles in a 7-0 team victory over Shenandoah. Shepherd was again victorious at #1 singles against Franklin & Marshall's Isaac Sales, 6-2, 6-2, but he and Rudden fell 8-4 at #1 doubles. The General won that match, 5-4. In the final contest of the week against nationally 19th-ranked Swarthmore, Shepherd won 6-2, 6-2, at #1 singles over Jiung Jung. He and Rudden lost, 8-5, at #1 doubles in a 6-3 team setback to the Garnet.
  • Darian Diaz, Shenandoah, Jr.
    February 11, 2019
    Diaz, a junior from Haymarket, Va., helped the Hornets open the 2019 spring season with a 5-3 triumph over Penn State-Altoona in the Winchester Country Club over the weekend. Diaz and doubles partner Bryan Harris claimed an 8-0 triumph from the top flight. Diaz was nearly as perfect by himself at #1 singles, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jimmy Gillespie.
