ODAC Cross Country Runners Close Season at NCAA Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. --- ODAC competitors took part in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon. A total of 19 runners from league schools took part in six-kilometer (women) and eight-kilometer (men) races at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.

A total of 587 competitors competed on chilly national championship courses with 294 men's competitors and 293 women's runners in composing their respective fields. The top 40 individuals in each race earn All-American honors.

Washington and Lee University's Charles Scharf was the top overall ODAC finisher after placing 52nd in the men's 8K competition at 25:44.6. University of Lynchburg's Sarah James led the conference's women's contingent in 78th position with a 6K time of 23:07.9.

Both of Lynchburg's squads featured in the team standings. The Hornets women, ranked 18th in Division III entering the event, placed 21st overall with 533 points. Johns Hopkins University claimed the women's team crown by three points over the University of Chicago, 144-147.

Lynchburg's men, slotted 19th before the championships, were down a key member after top runner Frank Csorba was forced to withdraw from the race around the two-kilometer mark. The Hornets finished in 30th position with 771 points. MIT blistered the field to claim the team title with 82 points, 47 tallies clear of second place Wartburg College.
