ODAC Players of the Week - Week 7

FOREST, Va. --- Swimming joins the ranks for this version of the ODAC weekly release, while fall sports are left with just two weeks remaining in regular season play. Those earning ODAC weekly honorees include (pictured from top-left): Caitlin Mertens from Lynchburg women's soccer, Jamie Hiegel from Bridgewater men's cross country, Kaitlyn Johnson from LYN women's cross country, Alec Cobb from Hampden-Sydney football, Jackie Lerro from LYN field hockey, Will Corry from Washington and Lee football, Rachel Gaston from BC volleyball, Alex Nelson from Randolph-Macon men's golf, Laurie Jones from W&L women's golf, Alex Fernandez from R-MC men's golf, Emily Hageboeck from W&L women's swimming, Patrick Sullivan from W&L men's swimming, and Austin Kues from LYN men's soccer.

FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Will Corry | Washington and Lee | Jr. | LInebacker
Corry, a junior from Watkinsville, Ga., continued making impact plays for the Generals defense in Saturday's 40-29 victory over Emory & Henry. Corry came thru with seven tackles featuring a pair of sacks in addition to a forced and recovered fumble. His two sacks resulted in a loss of 16 yards from scrimmage for E&H. Early in the second quarter, Corry strip-sacked the Wasps quarterback, picked up the loose ball, and returned six yards for a touchdown and a 27-0 advantage. Washington and Lee's defense has returned a fumble for a touchdown in each of its past two games after going nearly 12 years without one. Corry has racked up 34 tackles on the season including 6.5 sacks, which is tied for first in the ODAC with Guilford's Jarrod Russ. He is #1 in the conference in tackles for loss (11.5) and yards lost on sacks (-43) and tied for first in force fumbles (2).

FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alec Cobb | Hampden-Sydney | Sr. | Quarterback
Cobb, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., put together his second five-plus touchdown day in the last three weeks in the Tigers 42-21 victory at Bridgewater. Cobb threw four touchdown passes and ran in a fifth to offset one interception. He went 28-of-42 passing for 352 yards while completing passes to six different receivers. Cobb posted the game's first touchdown midway thru the first quarter as he dove the pylon following a 14-yard scamper to the end zone. He used his legs on his first TD pass as well, rolling out to his left and throwing against his body to Nick Kallivokas for a 12-yard score with 9:14 on the third quarter clock. Then came three long TD passes as he and Ed Newman connect catch-and-run plays of 37 and 68 yards followed by a 26-yard scoring pass. For the season, Cobb leads the ODAC in completion percentage (66.3%) and yards per game (409.0). He's second in yards (2,045), touchdowns (13), completions (163), attempts (246), and passing efficiency (148.7).

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jackie Lerro | Lynchburg | So. | Forward
Lerro, a sophomore from Royersford, Pa., put together an 11-point week in helping Lynchburg to a trio of victories. Lerro, who has now scored in four straight games, opened her week wth two goals in a 4-1 non-conference win over Stevenson. She followed with the game's opening tally in a 4-1 ODAC win at Shenandoah. Lerro capped her performance with an assist of Nikki Simpao's opening goal and then notching Lynchburg's second and fifth goals in the Hornets 5-1 non-conference victory at Dickinson. For the season, Lerro is tied for the ODAC lead in goals scored (11) and is third in points (29) and assists (7).

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Alex Nelson | Randolph-Macon | Jr.
Nelson, a junior from Weems, Va., tied for fourth at the Ted Keller Memorial hosted by Randolph-Macon at the Hanover Country Club in Ashland, Va. Nelson, along with teammate and Co-ODAC Men's Golfer of the Week Ryan Fernandez, were the top conference finishers among 26 players. Nelson carded rounds of 73 and 74 on the par 71 track set at 6,679 yards for a 4-over tournament score of 147. That finished three strokes off the leaders Jared Berlin and Justin Lankler of Franklin & Marshall College. Randolph-Macon finished third as a team at 35-over 603 (296-307).

Fernandez, a freshman from Selangor, Malaysia, tied for fourth at the Ted Keller Memorial hosted by Randolph-Macon at the Hanover Country Club in Ashland, Va. Fernandez, along with teammate and Co-ODAC Men's Golfer of the Week Alex Nelson, were the top conference finishers among 26 players. Fernandez carded rounds of 72 and 75 on the par 71 track set at 6,679 yards for a 4-over tournament score of 147. That finished three strokes off the leaders Jared Berlin and Justin Lankler of Franklin & Marshall College. Randolph-Macon finished third as a team at 35-over 603 (296-307).

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Laurie Jones | Washington and Lee | So.
Jones, a sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., picks up her third weekly honor after finishing in a tie for second at the Generals' Invitational hosted by Washington and Lee at the Lexington Golf & Country Club. Jones opened with a even-par 72 on the 5,800-yard layout and followed with a 2-over 74 to finish with a 2-over 146 for the tournament. That was just two shots off eventual winner Arisa Kimura from New York University. Jones efforts helped Washington and Lee to a fourth place showing in the team standings at 46-over 622 (312-310).

MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Austin Kues | Lynchburg | Sr. | Defender
Kues, a senior from High Point, N.C., put together a six point week in helping Lynchburg to a pair of ODAC victories. Kues opened his week with two goals in a 4-1 victory at crosstown rival Randolph. He punched in the game's first and fourth goals in the second and 64th minutes, respectively. In the Hornets second game of the week at Eastern Mennonite, Kues stepped up to bury a penalty kick in the 35th minute for what proved to be the lone goal of the match. With the two wins, nationally seventh-ranked Lynchburg sits atop the ODAC standings with 19 points at 6-0-1. Kues has registered seven points on the season on three goals and an assist.

SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Patrick Sullivan | Washington and Lee | So.
Sullivan, a sophomore from Pawleys Island, S.C., kicked off his 2018-19 campaign with five individual victories and one relay triumph in a pair of dual meet wins for Washington and Lee in addition to helping the Generals win the ODAC Relays. In a 156-101 win over Centre, Sullivan stopped the watches first in the 50-yard (21.77), 200-yard (1:44.33), and 500-yard (4:51.50) freestyle events. He picked up three more freestyle victories in a 161-101 win over Mary Washington. He won the 50-free (21.80), 100-yard free (47.97) and 200-free (1:44.07) while also swimming a leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.75). At the ODAC Relays, Sullivan helped Washington and Lee win five relays -- 3x50 backstroke (1:13.20), 500-free (4:23.07), 200-medley (1:36.01), 400-free (3:13.33), and 200-free (1:27.75).

SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Emily Hageboeck | Washington and Lee | Jr.
Hageboeck, a  junior from Charleston, W.Va., opened the 2018-19 season with a trio of stellar performances that amounted to four individual event victories and five relay wins. Hageboeck won both the 100-yard (1:08.81) and 200-yard (2:30.69) breaststroke events and helped her team win the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.97) in a 159-98 dual meet win over Centre. She participated in and won the same three events in a 166-93 triumph over Mary Washington. She posted respective winning times of 1:06.26, 2:21.87, and 1:49.21. The second time -- 2:21.87 -- eclipsed the NCAA "B" cut mark in the 200-breaststroke. Hageboeck helped W&L win the ODAC Relays as she swam a leg in the winning 200-medley (1:52.40), 3x50-yard breaststroke (1:34.36), and 3x100-yard individual medley (3:09.43) relays.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Caitlin Mertens | Lynchburg | Sr. | Forward
Mertens, a senior from Succasunna, N.J., continues to produce results in multiples as she put together a 10-point week featuring a pair of two goal games to help Lynchburg to a 2-0-1 record last week. In a matchup of two nationally 18th-ranked programs, Lynchburg -- ranked #18 by D3soccer.com -- tied Bridgewater -- ranked #18 by the United Soccer Coaches -- tied 2-2. Mertens scored the game's first two goals inside of the first six minutes before BC scored two in the second half to lock the contest. Mertens picked up her third goal of the week in a 10-0 ODAC win over Sweet Briar. She was back to scoring multiple goals in the Hornets third game as she found the net twice in a 6-1 win over Salem College. For the season, Mertens leads the ODAC in points (45) and goals scored (20). She is the sixth player in Lynchburg history to register a 20-goal season, and now ranks sixth all-time at Lynchburg with 54 career goals scored.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rachel Gaston | Bridgewater | Jr. | Outside Hitter
Gaston, a junior from Mechanicsville, Va., was both prolific and efficient offensively and strong on and off the net defensively in a trio of Bridgewater wins last week including a pair of ODAC victories. Gaston registered 52 kills at 5.78 per set and via a .416 hitting percentage on the way to racking up 56.0 points responsible at 6.2 per set. She added 43 total digs (4.78/set) and five total blocks to her stat line. In a 3-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Gaston hammered 19 kills at a .405 clip to go with 15 digs, an ace, and a block. She followed up with 15 kills and 16 digs with two blocks in a 3-0 non-conference win over Southern Virginia. Gaston capped her week with 18 kills on a .484 hitting percentage to go with 12 digs and two blocks in a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah. For the season, Gaston leads the ODAC in points per set (4.8) and is second in kills (296), kills per set (4.29), and total points (329.0).

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Jamie Hiegel | Bridgewater | Sr.
Hiegel, a senior from Richmond, Va., KollegeTown Pre-National Meet at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis., home of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships. Hiegel placed 46th overall with the best eight-kilometer time of any ODAC runner this week at 26:02.5. He was the top ODAC finisher at the meet. His efforts helped Bridgewater to 45th place in the team standings.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Kaitlyn Johnson | Lynchburg | So.
Johnson, a sophomore from Spotsylvania, Va., posted the fastest six-kilometer time in the ODAC this season at the Inter-Regional Border Battle hosted by Rowan University in Logan Township, N.J. Johnson set a program-record for 6K times at Lynchburg as she became the first Hornet to eclipse 22 minutes in program history. Her time of 21:54.7 finished 14th overall out of 348 runners. She helped Lynchburg to 12th of 39 teams, the highest finish of any South/Southeast Region team.
