ODAC Athletes of the Week | Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis

FOREST, Va. --- With the close of the football season, the first day of ODAC reporting in week 13 features eight athletes that put together some outstanding showings over the past week. Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards include (pictured from top and left): Mitchell Perry from Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis, Christina Harris from Lynchburg women's tennis, Mike Nickles from Randolph-Macon baseball, Arielle Eure from Ferrum softball, Carly Sandler from LYN women's lacrosse, Grayson Thurman from LYN baseball, Madie Rhoads from R-MC softball, and Ryan Kenney from LYN men's lacrosse.

Below are entries for all eight winners from today's multi-sport release. Stay tuned for track & field, soccer, field hockey, and volleyball awards on Tuesday followed by golf honors on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Madie Rhoads | Randolph-Macon | Sr. | Pitcher
Rhoads, a senior from Portsmouth, Va., surrendered just three hits and fanned 21 batters over 14.0 innings in the circle nationally 20th-ranked Randolph-Macon extended its winning streak to seven games last week. Rhoads opened with a full seven frames in a 2-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite University. She gave up one unearned run on two hits. She walked one and fanned 10 Royals. She set down each of the first six batters she faced, including four via punchout. She then returned 11-of-12 batters thru the middle innings with that lone baserunner coming via a wild pitch after a strikeout. Rhoads was nearly unhittable in a 4-0 win over Mary Washington in her second game of the week. She gave up a lone hit and walked a pair with 11 strikeouts in a full seven innings. She retired each of the first 12 Eagles she faced before walking the lead-off batter in the fifth inning. For the season, Rhoads is 5-2 with four complete games and an ODAC-best three shutouts in seven appearances, all starts. She owns a 2.12 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 39.2 innings of work. Her 10.24 strikeouts per game lead the conference. Opponents are hitting only .157 against her, the second-lowest average in the league.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Grayson Thurman | Lynchburg | Sr. | Pitcher
Thurman, a senior from Lynch Station, Va., tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless ball over two appearances to help Lynchburg to a pair of ODAC road wins. Thurman opened with a career-high 5.2 innings of work out the bullpen to earn the victory in an 11-7 victory at Virginia Wesleyan. He gave up just one hit and walked three batters while fanning a career-best eight batters. Thurman then finished off a 13-6 win at Emory & Henry. He climbed the hill for the final frame, striking out three of the four Wasps he faced. For the season, Thurman is 2-1 with two saves in 13 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He owns a 2.35 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 23.0 innings of work. Batters are hitting a paltry .130 against him.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Arielle Eure | Ferrum | Jr. | Outfielder
Eure, a junior from Summerfield, N.C., helped Ferrum to a 3-1 week by registering seven extra-base hits and a .615/.643/1.462 slash line over the four contests. Eure, who had two hits in each game, doubled twice and scored a run in the Panthers game one 5-1 victory at Guilford. In a 6-3 win in game two, Eure doubled amongst her two hits, drove in a run, and scored twice. Eure again had four hits in a split with Averett University. She belted a pair of solo homers, walked, and scored three runs in Ferrum's 15-7 setback to the Cougars in game one. In a 5-3 win in game two, she doubled twice on the way to two RBI with a run scored. For the season, Eure owns a .338/.420/.610 slash line. She is third in the ODAC in total bases (47), fourth in doubles (7) and homers (4), and fifth in runs scored (21).

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mike Nickles | Randolph-Macon | Sr. | 3rd Base
Nickles, a senior from Stafford, Va., saw half of his eight hits go for extra bases as he posted a .533/.526/1.200 slash line in nationally 12th-ranked Randolph-Macon's 3-1 week. Nickles, who had at least one RBI in each game last week, opened with a three-run smash to right to give R-MC the lead for good in the fifth inning in its 11-3 triumph over William Peace. He walked and scored twice as well in that contest. In an 8-2 victory at Hampden-Sydney, Nickles singled twice while driving in two runs and scoring once. In a split with #18 Shenandoah, Nickles singled and drove in a run in the Yellow Jackets 6-5 setback in game one. Game two was another story all-together as the 2019 ODAC Player of the Year went 4-for-4 with a pair of triples, a game-tying three-run homer, and a walk on the way to four RBI and three runs scored in R-MC's 15-7 win. For the season, Nickles is slashing at .333/.429/.583 with three homeruns and an ODAC fifth-best 24 RBI. He is also fifth in triples (2) and stolen bases (9).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Carly Sandler | Lynchburg | Gr. | Attack
Sandler, a graduate student from Lynchburg, Va., helped Lynchburg move into solo second place in the ODAC with a 12 points week in a pair of conference wins. Sandler registered a career-high eight points on three goals and a career-best five assists in an 18-15 victory at Randolph-Macon. She helped the Hornets recover from a trio of five-goal first-half deficits -- 6-1, 7-2, and 8-3 -- as Lynchburg recovered for its first win over Randolph-Macon since 2013. Sandler tacked on a ground ball and caused turnover to her stat line. In game two of the week, she scored twice on just three shots and dished out three assists in the Hornets 22-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite. For the season, Sandler is fourth in the ODAC in assists (17) and 10th in points (32) to go with 15 goals scored.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ryan Kenney | Lynchburg | Jr. | Attackman
Kenney, a junior from Hingham, Mass., put together an 11-point week as the nationally fifth-ranked Hornets improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in play with a pair of ODAC wins. Kenney opened his week with his second career collegiate hat trick in a 24-2 win over Ferrum. He then trumped himself in game two, posting career-highs of eight points on five goals and three assists in a 20-10 triumph over rivals Roanoke College. He added three ground balls and a caused turnover to his line. For the season, Kenney has registered 19 points on 14 goals and five assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Christina Harris | Lynchburg | Gr. | #1 Singles/#1 Doubles
Harris, a graduate student from Falls Church, Va., picks up her second weekly award of the season after helping Lynchburg post a trio of ODAC wins last week. It all started with a 5-4 win over Sweet Briar College. Harris and teammate Caroline Guill fell 8-7 in #1 doubles play against Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling. Harris made up for that with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, win over de Souza in #1 singles action. Harrison then earned four points in a pair of 9-0 wins over Shenandoah and Guilford. She and Guill defeated Jahveesha Combs and Lily Kimble in #1 doubles play against SU. Harris then topped Combs, 6-3, 6-2, at #1 singles. Against Guilford, Harris and Guill won 8-0 over Madyson Schreiber and Hannah Pardue at #1 doubles. Harris then added a point with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Schreiber at #1 singles. Harris is now 8-1 in singles play and 6-3 in singles action this season.

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mitchell Perry | Virginia Wesleyan | Sr. | #1 Singles | #1 Doubles
Perry, a senior from Johns Creek, Ga., picks up his second straight weekly award following a very busy and successful week for the Virginia Wesleyan men's squad. The Marlins went 3-2 in five team matches last week with Perry posting a 4-1 record at #1 singles and a 5-0 with partner Felix Bevc at #1 doubles. In a match against Division I Norfolk State (L, 7-0), Perry and Bevc posted a 6-4 win over Ignaio Guevel and Frederico Rebecchini. Perry accounted for two points in a 6-3 setback to Methodist. He and Bevc won 8-6 over Jordan Theron and Patrick Newsome in doubles play with Perry adding a 6-1, 6-3, win over Henry Murray in singles action. VWU posted an 8-1 win over Roanoke with Perry and Bevc winning 8-4 over Jack Fishwick and Grayson White in doubles action. Perry earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, singles result over Fishwick. Virginia Wesleyan also posted a pair of 8-1 win over Emory & Henry and Lynchburg. Perry and Bevc earned an 8-1 win over Archer Marlow and Sean Given from E&H and an 8-0 victory over Daniel Christian and Carter McCleary from Lynchburg in doubles play. Perry picked singles wins over E&H Brandon McGuire, 6-3, 6-1, and LYN's Colton Mullins, 6-0, 6-0. Perry is 7-4 overall in singles matches and 10-2 overall in doubles matches.
