
FOREST, Va. --- Winning on a large scale continued for ODAC athletes for the final report of the week featuring men's and women's golf. Both of this week's ODAC Golfers of the Week -- Connor Christie from Shenandoah University and An Shelmire from Washington and Lee University -- topped their respective fields. Christie posted a pair of eagles to aid his comeback to best 80 other players and win medalist honors at the Kinder-Williams Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College. Shelmire also used a second-round surge that included three birdies to top a national leaderboard of 93 competitors.
Below are entries for both ODAC Golfers of the Week. Click on the associated links to see that sport's weekly honor roll. Most weeks this fall, the following schedule will be used for awards reporting:
- Sundays: football (thru 11/13/22)
- Mondays: field hockey, soccer, swimming (when it begins), volleyball, wrestling (when it begins)
- Tuesdays: cross country
- Wednesday: golf

MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Christie, a first-year Syracuse, N.Y., began his collegiate career with a bang as he claimed medalist honors by one stroke at the Kinder Williams Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College. Christie posted a 3-under par 141 following 36 holes at the Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Va. He opened with an even-par 72 featuring four birdies on the 6,769-yard layout, leaving him four shots off the pace after day one. He responded with a 3-under 69 in round two, carding a birdie and two crucial eagles -- including one of the par-4 first hole -- to finish one stroke ahead of Brogan Bennett from Southern Virginia University and Ryan McGarry for McDaniel College atop the leaderboard. Playing as a member of Shenandoah's "B" team in the event, Christie helped that group of five Hornets to a 636 (322-314) total.

WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Shelmire, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, kicked off her season in the best way possible by capturing her first collegiate medal in a strong national tournament field that featured eight of the top-25 teams in the Division III Mizuno Women's Golf Coaches' Association Preseason Poll. Shelmire won the NCAA Division III Fall Preview by one stroke over Kendall Nicholson from the University of Redlands, completing 36 holes at El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., at 2-over par 146. She opened with a 3-over 75, leaving her tied for seventh with four other players. Shelmire caught fire in round two with three birdies to card a 1-under 71, the second-lowest round on the par-72 track set to 5,600 yards. She made five birdies for the tournament and tied for first in par-3 scoring (2.75) on the way to topping the 93-player leaderboard. Her efforts helped 13th-ranked Washington and Lee to a third place team showing at 39-over 615 (309-306).
