Former Assistant at Amherst and Western New England to Lead Wasps
EMORY, Va. --- Sara Schoenhoft has been
introduced as the Head Softball Coach at Emory & Henry College,
Director of Athletics Myra Sims announced Friday. She will begin
her duties on September 1.
Schoenhoft comes to Emory & Henry after serving as the
assistant coach at Division III Western New England College which
finished 2011 with a final record of 27-18. The Golden Bears
advanced through The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament
before losing in the championship game. During that stint,
Schoenhoft was responsible for practice planning, game management,
coaching third base, recruiting and fundraising.
“Sara was able to separate herself from the other strong
candidates that were in the pool,” said Sims. “She was
able to articulate a sound plan for recruiting, and also
communicated in clear terms that she understands the importance of
developing a positive culture around the program.”
Prior to WNEC, she also served as an assistant coach at Amherst
College which is a perennial power in NCAA Division III athletics.
Schoenhoft completed her Master of Science degree in Exercise and
Sport Studies at Smith College this past spring. While at Smith,
she also worked as an assistant in the sports information
department.
“Sara has been at the Division III level as an athlete and as
an assistant coach, so she places the proper emphasis on the
importance of the academic achievement and the personal development
of our student-athletes,” added Sims. “Her work
experiences, and strong communication skills will be a great asset
to our softball program and to our athletic program.”
A 2007 graduate of Kenyon College, Schoenhoft was an outstanding
catcher and hitter. She earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference
honors in three of her four seasons at Kenyon and is among the
program leaders in several statistical categories.
“I would like to thank Emory & Henry College for the
opportunity to lead the softball program.” said Schoenhoft.
“I am excited to join a qualified and committed staff, and am
confident that the softball team will soon become a force to reckon
with in the ODAC.”
Schoenhoft takes over a Wasps’ softball program that finished
at 10-24 in 2011.
