Rowan Tops Randolph-Macon in NCAA Softball Super Regional Opener

ASHLAND, Va. --- Seventh inning magic came up short for Randolph-Macon Softball against Rowan on Friday afternoon, as the Profs prevailed 5-1 over the Yellow Jackets.

THE BASICS

  • Location: Ashland, Va./Randolph-Macon College/RMC Softball Field

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) stranded a Profs baserunner in the first inning and the Yellow Jackets immediately got a runner aboard in the bottom half with a hit-by-pitch but couldn't cash in.
  • Rowan got the first hit of the game in the top of the second with a two-out double but Ellis got the last batter with a strikeout to end the threat.
  • The Profs got on the board first with a two-out homer to go up 1-0, and then added another after three straight singles to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • RMC couldn't get anything going offensively heading into the seventh. Rowan got some insurance in the top of the seventh inning with a three-run home run that gave Rowan a comfortable lead, forcing RMC to their final three outs.
  • Rilee Baughan (Warsaw, Va./Rappahannock) led off the seventh with a walk and Kayla Davis got the first hit of the game for the Yellow Jackets directly after. Gracie Ellis scored Baughan with a single down the third base line. The Profs were able to end the threat, holding on to win 5-1.
