Marlins Meet Randolph-Macon in Semifinals
Box Score
SALEM, Va. ---Tonia Jones scored a
game-high 21 points to lead Virginia Wesleyan College to a 70-54
victory over Guilford College Old Dominion Athletic Conference
(ODAC) Tournament quarterfinals Thursday night.
The third-seeded Marlins (18-8) advance to Saturday's semifinals to
play number-two Randolph-Macon College, an 86-58 winner over
Eastern Mennonite University earlier in the day. The victory
avenged Saturday's 61-57 loss to Guilford in both teams'
regular-season finale in Greensboro, N.C.
The Quakers' season ends with an 11-15 record.
Virginia Wesleyan used an 18-0 run early in the second half to
break open a five-point game. Jones started the burst with the
first of her two three-pointers in the game that touched off a
barrage of long-range baskets. The Marlins drained five of their
seven three-pointers during a three-minute span in the second half.
Andrea Ushinski's trifecta with 13:45 to play capped the run and
opened an insurmountable 56-33 Marlins' advantage.
Guilford got back to within 13 points with 6:31 to go, but no
closer.
Maggie Smith scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds
for Virginia Wesleyan. She scored 10 points in the first half,
including four during a 12-3 spurt that helped the Marlins to a
34-28 halftime edge.
Junior Ann Seufer paced the Quakers with 15 points and senior
Tracey Croner added 14 in her final game. The 2009 First Team
All-ODAC forward concludes her Guilford career with 1,021 points in
77 games, which ranks 14th in school history. Her 13.3 points per
game career scoring average stands ninth all-time at Guilford.
