McKee, a senior from Cornelius, N.C., earned MVP honors at the Guilford Tip-Off Invitational after leading the Maroons to the tournament title with a pair of wins, including a 74-62 triumph over 18th-ranked Christopher Newport University. McKee opened with a double-double in a 64-47 win over Meredith. She posted 15 points and 11 rebounds with five steals. She made all eight of her foul shots. She missed just one over the two games as she was 7-of-8 against CNU on the way to 18 points and eight rebounds with two assists and another steal. She knocked down a trio of three-pointers. The two victories also mark the first for new head coach Carla Flaherty.
ODAC teams went 12-8 over the opening weekend
with five teams starting undefeated. Two wins came against ranked
opponents as Eastern Mennonite topped #7 Whitman, last year's
national runner-up, and Roanoke defeated #18 Christopher
Newport... Bridgewater opens its season
on Wednesday against CNU... Eastern
Mennonite went 1-1, falling to Wilmington (74-55)
before defeating #7 Whitman (76-73) in overtime. Jess Rheinheimer
earned an all-tournament team spot after averaging 17.5 points and
5.5 rebounds. She had 22 points and six boards against
Whitman. Shakeerah Sykes had a double-double in that contest with
20 points and 12 boards... Emory &
Henry opened with a pair of losses to Greensboro
(79-67) and N.C. Wesleyan (79-77). Karina Farr had a double-double
against NCWC with 10 points and 13 boards. She went for 14
and seven against GBORO with four
assists... Guilford went 1-1 over the
week, falling to CNU (73-61) before topping Meredith (56-48). Anais
Weatherly had double-doubles in both games, going for 20 points and
13 boards against CNU followed by 15 points and 12 rebounds against
Meredith. She added five steals against
CNU... Hollins dropped their first two
contests to N.C. Wesleyan (67-64) and Greensboro (64-41). Britney
Campbell had 22 points and seven rebounds against NCWC. Jewell
Parfitt went for 14 and 11 points, respectively, in both
games... Lynchburg split two games at
the Johns Hopkins tournament, falling to Puget Sound (64-53) before
defeating Whittier (79-39). Shannon Allan had 16 points in game one
and followed that with 30 points and seven rebounds against
Whittier. She was 4-for-4 from deep and 10-for-10 from the line in
the two games
combined... Randolph defeated St. Mary's
(71-62) to open the season. Abigail Bullins led four WildCats
in double figures with 27
points and she buried 6-of-11 from downtown. Allie Druffel
had 10
rebounds... Randolph-Macon knocked off
Ferrum (69-65) on Saturday for its first win. Katie Anderson had a
double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Sarah Parson added 21
points, hitting 3-of-5 from
deep...Roanoke went 2-0 to start the Carla
Flaherty era, as the Maroons defeated Meredith (64-47) and then
stunned #18 Christopher Newport (75-62). Tatum McKee had a
double-double against Meredith with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go
with five steals. She added 18 points and eight boards in the win
over CNU. Cary Beahm went for 20 against Meredith and added 12
boards against CNU... Shenandoah kicked
off the Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft era with wins over Methodist (48-39)
and Mary Baldwin (85-36). Kirstyn Arcata had 17 points and five
boards in a full 40 minutes against Methodist. Holly Chittenden had
a double-double in that game with 10 points and 10
boards... Virginia Wesleyan split two
games at Mary Washington, falling to Widener (64-62) before
defeating York (N.Y.)(77-39). Brittany Glasco had 20 points and
seven boards in game two, while Nancy Kelly led with 15 points
against Widener. Andrea Paphites returned from injury to score 13
points with seven assists in that
contest... Washington and Lee opened
with wins over Mary Baldwin (76-29) and Methodist (71-48). Emily
Perszyk began her collegiate career with 28 points in two games,
including 24 against Methodist. She was 6-of-8 from deep in
that game.
