PORTSMOUTH, Va. --- Former Randolph-Macon basketball standout Megan Silva Schultz has been voted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, the first NCAA Division III student-athlete to be so honored.
A 2006 graduate of R-MC, Silva Schultz is the most accomplished student-athlete in school history. During her four-year career, she amassed 2,371 points, 700 assists and 446 steals, each total more than any other basketball player in the history of the school and in the history of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The Yellow Jackets went 99-23 during her tenure, a winning percentage of 81%. R-MC was victorious in 85% of its ODAC contests, going 68-12 in conference games.
"What a tremendous honor for Megan, her family, teammates, and Randolph-Macon College," said Carroll LaHaye, R-MC head women's basketball coach. "As the most decorated athlete at Randolph-Macon, it was going to happen some day, but to have happened just 11 years upon graduation is a true testament of what she accomplished. We will all share in her joy as she is recognized for being the outstanding Division III student-athlete that she was at Randolph-Macon and the Commonwealth of Virginia."
Silva Schultz is part of an eight-member induction class, the largest in the Hall's 51-year history. The group will be inducted on April 7, 2018 in the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach. The other inductees include Frank Beamer, former Virginia Tech football coach; Michael Cuddyer, major league baseball player from Chesapeake; Doug Doughty, Roanoke Times reporter; Chuck Hartman, former Virginia Tech baseball coach; Thomas Jones, University of Virginia running back; Kara Lawson, University of Tennessee women's basketball player from Alexandria; and Rick Mahorn, Hampton University men's basketball player.
A native of Glen Allen, Va. and a graduate of Hermitage High School, Silva Schultz was a four-year letter winner and two-year captain at R-MC. She was All-ODAC First Team all four years and was named ODAC Freshman of the Year in 2003. Silva Schultz was an All-American, ODAC Player of the Year and State Player of the Year in each of her final three seasons. She was All-South Region First Team and All-State First Team all four years.
In 2006, Silva Schultz was named the Honda Division III Female Athlete of the Year.
She was National Player of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), D3hoops.com and DIII News. Silva Schultz was the winner of the Jostens Trophy as the top player in the nation in Division III. She also earned the Susan B. de Nagy Award as the top female student-athlete at Randolph-Macon.
During her four-year career as a Yellow Jacket, Silva Schultz helped R-MC win three ODAC titles and earn three bids to the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets reached the NCAA Championship Game in 2005 and advanced to the Elite Eight in 2006.
Her No. 11 was retired in 2007. In her first year of eligibility, Silva Schultz was elected into the Randolph-Macon Athletics Hall of Fame. She will be inducted in the fall of 2018.
Silva Schultz earned a degree in Business/Economics from R-MC in 2006. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies. Silva Schulz received a master's in Sport Leadership from VCU. She currently is Event Director at the Metropolitan Richmond Sports Backers.
Since graduation, Silva Schultz has stayed involved with her alma mater. A generous donor, she has served as a member of the Yellow Jacket Club Advisory Board.
Silva Schultz is the ninth former Yellow Jacket to be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, joining Marty Brennaman, Chris Chenery, Jennings Culley, Ted Keller, Hugh Stephens, Syd Thrift, Paul Webb and Helmut Werner.
