ODAC Athletes of the Week | Baseball, Basketball, Football, Lacrosse, Softball, Swimming, Tennis

FOREST, Va. --- The largest reporting day of the season kicks off Week 7 of ODAC weekly awards. While this is the final report for basketball and swimming ahead of their postseason events this week, baseball and softball continue with the addition of football, lacrosse, and tennis augmenting this week's honorees. Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards include (pictured from top and left): Grayson Overstreet from Emory & Henry football, Jared Medwar from Hampden-Sydney lacrosse, Hanna Hull from Virginia Wesleyan softball, Buzz Anthony from Randolph-Macon men's basketball, Daja Burgee from VWU softball, Trevor O'Neill from Lynchburg men's swimming, Christina Harris from LYN women's tennis, Brett Tharp from Bridgewater football, Kaitlyn Harley from Ferrum women's lacrosse, Owen Tappy from H-SC baseball, Alexis Hoppers from E&H women's basketball, Avery Neaves from LYN baseball, Claire Galloway from LYN women's swimming, and Jack Fishwick from Roanoke men's tennis.

Below are entries for all 14 winners from today's multi-sport release. Stay tuned for track & field and soccer awards on Tuesday followed by golf honors on Wednesday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alexis Hoppers | Emory & Henry | Jr. | Center
Hoppers, a junior from Sparta, N.C., finished the regular season like she started it with a pair of double-doubles to help Emory & Henry to a 1-1 week against ODAC foes. Hopper opened with 21 point and 14 rebounds in an 85-67 victory over Ferrum. She was 9-of-14 from the floor including 1-of-4 from deep and made both of her foul shouts. Three of her rebounds came via the offensive glass and she registered a steal. Hoppers followed up her sixth double-double of the year with her seventh in a 71-67 setback to Shenandoah. She again poured in 21 points to go with 13 boards, including four offensive rebounds. She went 5-of-12 from the field and canned 11-of-12 from the charity stripe to give her a 92.9-percent (13-of-14) for the week. On the season, Hoppers is averaging 13.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, the latter ranking third in the ODAC. She leads the league in total points (164), offensive (37), defensive (73) and total rebounds (110), and field goals made (62-of-128). She is third in free throws made (38-of-49) and ninth in foul shooting (77.6).

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Buzz Anthony | Randolph-Macon | Sr. | Guard
Anthony, a senior from Arnold, Md., capped the 2021 spring regular season with a trio of strong efforts towards three Randolph-Macon victories. The two-time ODAC Player of the Year averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.3 steals while shooting 60-percent (18-of-30) from the field for the week. He started with 13 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a 99-68 win over Bridgewater. He was 5-of-7 from the field including 3-of-3 from three-point territory. Anthony followed that with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting including 3-of-4 from deep in a 76-49 triumph at Virginia Wesleyan. He pulled down 11 rebounds and came up two assists shy of a triple-double with eight eight helpers to go with a pair of steals. Two days later, Anthony again performed well against the Marlins, helping nationally top-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 74-58 victory. Anthony scored 15 points on 5-of-11 from the field including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. He collected nine rebounds to go with six assists and two steals. For the season, Anthony ranks eighth in the ODAC in scoring at 16.5 points per game. He leads the league in assists (48) and steals (16). he is third in three-pointers made (22-of-37) and three-point shooting (.595). He averages 5.6 rebounds per game.

WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Claire Galloway | Lynchburg | So. | Freestyle
Galloway, a sophomore from Holly Springs, N.C., put together a strong outing in the Hornets regular-season ending action at the Liberty Last Chance meet hosted by Liberty University at the Liberty Natatorium. Galloway set a Lynchburg program-record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.52-seconds to place fourth in the event. That time ranks #1 in the ODAC this season entering ODAC championship week.

MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Trevor O'Neill | Lynchburg | Fy. | Freestyle
O'Neill, a first-year from Raleigh, N.C., finished the regular season with a strong swim at the Liberty Last Chance meet hosted by Liberty University at the Liberty Natatorium. O'Neill posted a time of 53.62-seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, which ranks third all-time in Hornets history. That time would also ranked #1 in the ODAC this season, but since Lynchburg competed unopposed in the meet, all times (designated as time trials) are only officially eligible for program records and not conference or national rankings.

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Hanna Hull | Virginia Wesleyan | Gr. | LHP
Hull, a graduate student from Chesterfield, Va., earns her second straight weekly honor after picking up a pair of wins last week including a complete game shutout of nationally third-ranked Christopher Newport University. Hull started her week with a five-inning one-hitter in a 9-1 victory over Meredith College. She gave up one run on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts over five frames. Then came two appearances against the #3 Captains. Hull two-hit CNU in the first game picking up a 2-0 seven inning shutout. She walked six batters and fanned eight in keeping CNU off balance. She then finished game two, working the final 1.1 innings of an 11-8 Virginia Wesleyan victory. She gave up two runs on three walks and did not allow a hit while striking out two more batters. Hull is now 3-0 on the season with a 1.03 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 20.1 innings in the circle. Opponents are hitting .050 against her. Fourth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan is now 6-0 on the season.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Owen Tappy | Hampden-Sydney | So. | Relief Pitcher
Tappy, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., put the caps on a strong pitching day in the Tigers 2-1 victory at Methodist in the first game of a double-header split in Hampden-Sydney's opening games of the schedule. Tappy tossed three scoreless frames to close the game and earn his first victory in his first appearance of the season. He gave up one hit and walked two batters while fanning a pair.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Daja Burgee | Virginia Wesleyan | Sr. | Catcher
Burgee, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., slashed at .545/.615/1.182 in helping nationally fourth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan to a pair of sweeps over Meredith College (9-1 | 6-0) and third-ranked Christopher Newport University (2-0 | 11-8). Burgee had a hit in each contest beginning with a 3-for-3 effort in game one against MC. She doubled and homered with three RBI and three runs scored in that contest. She went 1-for-2 with a RBI, walk, and a run scored in game two. Against CNU, Burgee went 1-for-3 in game one and then bashed a three-run homer to break a 3-3 tied in the third inning of game two. She drove in four runs in total in that game. For the season, Burgee is owns a .588/.632/1.000 slash line and is tied for the ODAC lead in homers (2) and RBI (9) with Emory & Henry's Alex Braun.

Avery Neaves | Lynchburg | So. | Catcher/Outfielder
Neaves, a sophomore from Reston, Va., had a hand in 10 of Lynchburg's 14 runs scored last week as the Hornets went 1-2 in non-conference games. Neaves nearly hit for the cycle in an 11-9 win over Averett. He went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and homer on the way to driving in seven runs and scoring two more. The seven RBI are the most by a Lynchburg player since Joe Rogers plated eight Hornets against Oneonta State on February 22, 2014. In game two at William Peace, Neaves registered his eighth RBI of the week. For the season, Neaves is slashing .316/.400/.947 with that .947 slugging percentage leading the ODAC. He also leads the conference in runs (6), homers (3), RBI (11), total bases (18), and stolen bases (3).

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brett Tharp | Bridgewater | Jr. | Linebacker
Tharp, a junior from Baker, W.Va., came up big in the clutch for Bridgewater as the Eagles opened their title defense season with a 27-21 non-conference win over ODAC foe Shenandoah. Tharp posted nine total tackles including seven solo stops including a tackle-for-loss, an interception, and pass breakup. His pass break-up came on third down midway thru the second quarter to halt a Hornets possession. His biggest two plays, however, came on Shenandoah's final two drives. Tharp registered his TFL early in the fourth quarter as Bridgewater forced Shenandoah into a 3-and-out, which the Eagles followed up with a clock-chewing 8:37 drive that finished with a Cameron Gieseman 27-yard field goal. Tharp then came up big with Shenandoah knocking on the door with less than a minute to play. He intercepted a pass at the Eagles' 10-yard line with 46-seconds to play to effectively seal BC's six-point victory.

FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grayson Overstreet | Emory & Henry | So. | Running Back
Overstreet, a sophomore from Moneta, Va., enjoys playing Ferrum College as he opened 2021 spring much like he closed 2019 fall against the Panthers in helping Emory & Henry to a 17-0 win on Friday evening. Overstreet carried the ball 32 times and churned out 196 yards at a 6.1 yards per-carry clip. He found pay dirt twice via a three-yard scamper to open the game's scoring in the first quarter and then an eight-yard scoring run with 46-seconds remaining in the first half. Seven of his carries covered more than 10 yards including a 41-yard burst to setup his second touchdown. Over his past two games, both against Ferrum, Overstreet has gained 520 yards on 67 carries with four touchdowns. That includes an ODAC single-game record 324-yard performance in the 2019 season finale.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kaitlyn Harley | Ferrum | Sr. | Attack
Harley, a senior from Waldorf, Md., helped Ferrum open the 2021 season with three consecutive victories on the road. Harley registered 12 total points on 10 goals and two assists with two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers over the three contests. She opened with three goals and one assist to go with a ground ball and a caused turnover in a 14-8 victory at Methodist University. Harley followed up with another three-goal one-assist effort to go with a caused turnover with a 17-2 triumph at N.C. Wesleyan College. She caped her week with four goals, two draw controls, and a ground ball in a 10-4 win at Averett University.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jared Medwar | Hampden-Sydney | Sr. | Midfielder
Medwar, a senior from Apex, N.C., helped the Tigers open the 2021 season with a 1-1 record in a pair of non-conference games. The USILA Preseason All-American was a constant threat to Southern Virginia University's cage in a 21-16 Hampden-Sydney win. He peppered 11 of his 17 shots on target, scoring six times to go with one assist. He also collected two ground balls. In a 16-10 setback to nationally third-ranked Christopher Newport, Medwar scored twice and handed out a pair of assists. He also corralled three ground balls and registered a caused turnover.

WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Christina Harris | Lynchburg | Gr. | #1 Singles/#1 Doubles
Harris, a graduate student from Falls Church, Va., kicked off the 2021 spring season by collecting a pair of points to lead Lynchburg to a 5-4 victory team win over Methodist University. The victory marks the first time the Hornets have topped the Monarchs since 1993. Harris joined Lauren Pascadlo to earn an 8-6 win at #1 doubles over MU's Abby Caddick and Sydni Lewis. Harris then went up against Caddick in #1 singles action and posted a 6-0, 6-4 triumph.

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jack Fishwick | Roanoke | Sr. | #1 Singles/#1 Doubles
Fishwick, a senior from Roanoke, Va., helped the Maroons open the season with a 1-1 showing against a pair of ODAC opponents. Fishwick claimed all four points in his #1 doubles and #1 singles match opportunities. He posted a 6-3, 6-3 singles win and joined Grayson White for an 8-3 doubles victory in Roanoke's 8-1 team victory over Hampden-Sydney. That marked the first time the Maroons have defeated the Tigers since the 2015-16 season. Fishwick and White again claimed a point against Guilford via an 8-6 doubles results. Fishwick added a 7-6, 6-1 singles triumph to account for two of RC's three-points in the Quakers' 6-3 team win.
