WLU’s McKelvey Wins Two ODAC Awards

LC's Devlin, VWC's Horowitz Share Top Pitcher Honors

SALEM, Va. --- Washington and Lee University's Terrence McKelvey took home a pair of awards in the annual selection of the All-ODAC Baseball Teams on Wednesday afternoon.  The senior outfielder was named the ODAC Player of the Year in a vote of the conference's coaches, and he earned the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete Award as chosen by the ODAC's sports information directors.

For the second straight year, the league's top pitching award is shared amongst a pair of hurlers.  Lynchburg College's Joe Devlin and Virginia Wesleyan College's Brett Horowitz were tabbed as ODAC Co-Pitchers of the Year.  Washington and Lee mentor Jeff Stickley was selected as the ODAC Coach of the Year, and Bridgewater College shortstop Tyler Hodges garnered ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades.

With the NCAA Division III Tournament still ahead of him, McKelvey is currently batting .415 (49-for-118), placing him third in the league, and he's recorded at least one hit in 24-of-29 games played.  He's scored 33 runs, drove in 24 (RBI), and collected 10 doubles, five triples and a pair of homers.  He's among the league leaders in several categories including second in triples and on-base percentage (.507).  McKelvey has also flashed the leather in 2009, playing an errorless centerfield in 58 chances (56 putouts) with two outfield assists.  During ODAC play, McKelvey batted .422 (27-for-64), hitting safely in 13-of-17 games played with 17 runs scored.

In the classroom, McKelvey maintains a 3.603 grade point average while majoring in European history.  He is a six-time member of the Washington and Lee University Dean's List as well as a Washington and Lee Scholar-Athlete.  He is also a past member of the All-ODAC Academic Team.

Devlin finished the 2009 season tied for second in the ODAC in wins with a 6-2 overall record.  He registered a 3.39 earned run average covering 58.1 innings of work, and kept the ball in play as he surrendered just one homerun all season.  Against ODAC opponents, he went a perfect 4-0 in four starts (five appearances) with a 2.45 ERA.  He allowed 35 hits and fanned 15 batters 33.0 innings pitched.  He went seven or more innings in each of his starts, and did not surrender a homer to any ODAC batters.

Horowitz ended his campaign as the conference leader in appearances with 23, and tied for first in wins with a 7-2 overall record.  He posted a 2.80 ERA (fourth in the ODAC) in 61.0 innings, allowing batters to only hit .226 against him, good enough for second in the conference.  Against conference teams, Horowitz made nine appearances including two starts that covered 35.2 innings of work.  He posted a 5-1 record with one save to go with a 2.52 ERA.  He gave up only 28 hits and five walks while striking out 29 batters.

Stickley earned his fourth ODAC top coaching honor after leading the Generals to their first ODAC baseball crown in program history.  Washington and Lee posted a 22-13 overall record including a 9-9 league showing that resulted in the conference tournament's sixth seed.  The Generals won four of five contests in the tournament, boasting a .332 team batting average and a 3.89 team ERA.

Hodges' first season in Bridgewater ended with him batting .373 (56-for-15), third-best on the team.  He recorded six doubles and 22 RBI while collecting eight stolen bases.  In league play, he batted .382 (29-for-76) with 17 runs scored.  He also made only seven errors while starting at shortstop in each ODAC contest.
