Shenandoah Favored to Repeat, Tops ODAC Baseball Poll

Shenandoah Favored to Repeat, Tops ODAC Baseball Poll

FOREST, Va. --- ODAC baseball continued a decade-long period of success last season by winning four more games on the national stage, bringing the league's total to 45 victories since 2013. League fans expect at least that level of achievement this season as we prepare to open the new campaign with the announcement of the 2023 ODAC Baseball Preseason Poll.

Reigning champs Shenandoah University and 2021 title winners University of Lynchburg are separated by just 14 points following the annual survey of the conference's head coaches. SU collected 119 markers powered by nine first place votes, while LYN secured the remaining three top nods on the way to 105 tallies. Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College, and Bridgewater College complete a clearly separated top-five contingent. The Yellow Jackets earned 99 points, while the 2022 runner-up Maroons and Eagles picked up 90 and 87 markers, respectively.

In the following sections, we take a quick look back at last season and get a feel for what to expect for the upcoming baseball campaign.

2022 ODAC TOURNAMENT

  • The ODAC returned to its two-weekend eight team format in 2022 with Shenandoah and Roanoke ultimately playing for the conference trophy.
  • In the best-of-3 series showdowns on campus, both second-seeded Shenandoah and sixth-seeded Roanoke both earned 2-0 series wins over their opponents.
  • SU defeated #7 Hampden-Sydney, 6-2, in game one and 4-1 in game two to punch its ticket to High Point, N.C., for the double-elimination final round.
  • Roanoke went on the road and topped #3 Randolph-Macon, 8-4 in 12 innings, in game one and then scored a 7-3 triumph in game to join not only SU but top-seeded Lynchburg and #5 Bridgewater at Truist Point.
  • All four teams were reseeded -- LYN, SU, BC, RC -- prior to opening play on the final weekend.
  • On day one, Roanoke earned a 15-3 win over Lynchburg, while SU notched a 9-3 triumph over Bridgewater.
  • On day two, Lynchburg eliminated Bridgewater, 4-1, while Shenandoah put itself in the driver's seat with a 5-4 victory over Roanoke; the Maroons capped the second day with a 2-1 win in 10 innings over Lynchburg, eliminating the Hornets from contention.
  • On day three, Roanoked needed to win the first game to force a winner-take-all title clash, but Shenandoah put its foot down on the gas and closed out the series with a game-in-hand with a 13-0 shutout.
  • The win marked SU's fourth overall ODAC title and third since 2018.

2022 NCAA DIVISION III TOURNAMENT

  • ODAC automatic qualifier Shenandoah was joined by Lynchburg as an at-large selection to the NCAA's field of 60 teams.
  • Both squads were selected to host regional pods and turned those opportunities into multiple victories, but neither advanced beyond the regional setup.
  • Shenandoah topped St. Joseph's (L.I.), 10-3, in its first game before falling to Catholic in game two, 6-5; SU stayed alive with a 10-8 victory over St. Joe's and then forced a winner-take-the-region contest with a 6-3 win over Catholic to start the final day; the deciding game between the two foes featured a combined 23 runs and 33 hits with the Cardinals advancing via a 13-10 scoreline.
  • Lynchburg also won its first game, defeating Salve Regina, 7-3; Birmingham-Southern handed LYN its first loss, 10-2, on day two, and unlike their northern namesakes, the Hornets dropped a second game against Salve Regina, 6-3, to close their season.
