R-MC, H-SC Put Three Each on All-ODAC First Team

SALEM, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College and Hampden-Sydney College each put three players on the All-ODAC First Team as part of the 2010 ODAC Baseball All-Conference Teams.  Virginia Wesleyan College designated hitter, Mike Marion, was selected as the ODAC Player of the Year, and Randolph-Macon hurler Kyle Hicks was tabbed the ODAC Pitcher of the Year in a vote of the league’s head coaches.

The Tigers’ Jeff Kinne was honored with the ODAC Coach of the Year award, and Lynchburg College designated hitter, Brock Shiflett, took home ODAC Rookie of the Year honors.  VWC’s Max Axelrod was chosen the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote of the conference’s sports information directors.

Marion, a senior from Springfield, Va., provided the punch to an offense that hit 35 homeruns, second in the ODAC.  Marion leads the conference in several categories including hits (61), homers (18), runs batted in (65), slugging percentage (.963) and total bases (130).  He finished his season just shy of the Triple Crown with a .452 batting average, second in the ODAC (.458 – Dylan Smith, Eastern Mennonite).  Marion hit multiple homeruns in a game five times this season, including three round-trippers to go with seven RBI in a 4-for-6 showing against Roanoke.  He hit safely in 29-of-37 games played, registering 23 multi-hit games.

Hicks, a senior from Goochland, Va., buoyed the Yellow Jackets pitching staff with a conference-best 2.15 earned run average.  In nine appearances (all starts), he went 6-2 in 54.1 innings of work.  He allowed 51 hits and fanned 48 batters while only surrendering 11 free passes.  He went six or more innings in six of his starts on his way to a league-leading 6.04 innings pitched per nine innings.  He threw a pair of complete games and registered one shutout in a nine-inning gem against Washington and Lee in which he struck out eight Generals.  He walked one and gave up six hits in that contest.  His .243 batting average against is second in the ODAC.

Kinne completed his sixth season with Hampden-Sydney, and this is his third ODAC top coaching honor, having won the award in 2005 and 2007.  His Tigers posted a 23-10-1 overall record and a 13-5 ODAC mark on the way to the third seed in the 2010 ODAC Baseball Tournament.  As a team, H-SC’s offense led the ODAC in homeruns (37), triples (19) and slugging percentage (.516).  The pitching staff was first in opposing batting average (.287) and second in earned run average (4.95).

Shiflett, a freshman from Richmond, Va., put together a solid first season in the Hill City, posting a .397 batting average for 13th in the ODAC.  He has collected 56 hits, good for fifth in the ODAC.  He is also fifth in doubles with 14.  Shiflett has recorded 18 multi-hit games that include 10 games of three knocks or more.  Over the last 10 games of the season, he went 22-for-47 (.468) with seven doubles.

Axelrod, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., starred both in the classroom and on the field for the Marlins.  He boasts a 3.95 grade point average in an individualized major developed within the school’s curriculum.  He is a Presidential Scholarship recipient, and has been an honoree on the VWC Dean’s List each of four semesters since transferring from the College of William and Mary.  He also received the 2009 and 2010 W.B. Schaffer Awards as the male student-athlete with the highest GPA at VWC.  On the field, Axelrod hit at a .324 clip with 10 doubles, three triples, two homers and 29 RBI.  He is the Marlins’ top man on the base paths as he swiped eight bags in 10 attempts.
