SU’s Anderson, VWC’s Monteverde, EMU’s Hall Earn Major Honors

FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College outfielder Cole Migliorini and Shenandoah University starter Colin Morse earned ODAC Player and ODAC Pitcher of the Year honors in a vote of the league’s head coaches, headlining the 2017 All-ODAC Baseball Awards. SU mentor Kevin Anderson picked up ODAC Coach of the Year laurels, while Virginia Wesleyan College lefty Patrick Monteverde secured ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Eastern Mennonite University outfielder Joe Hall was tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete by the ODAC’s sports information directors.

The 2017 all-conference teams feature just nine athletes of the 40 award winners that earned all-league honors a season ago. Five of those repeat standouts appear on the All-ODAC First Team. Washington and Lee University starter Tom Concklin earned a second straight nod on the conference’s top team. The remaining four each moved up a rung from the 2016 All-ODAC Second Team. That list includes W&L reliever Danny Devereux and third baseman Ryan Weston, Shenandoah designated hitter Jake Loew, and Virginia Wesleyan outfielder Justin Erby.

Migliorini, a senior from Stafford, Va., has been on a tear at the plate all season, hitting safely in 30-of-38 games played. That includes a 14-game hitting streak midway thru the campaign and 20 total multi-hit games highlighted by a 4-for-5 effort with three runs driven in in a late-season conference win against Hampden-Sydney. Migliorini is hitting .399 overall, which was buoyed by a .451-mark in conference play, second amongst all players. His .727 overall and .768 conference slugging percentage are tops in the league. He has registered 44 RBI this season, with a league-best 32 of those coming in ODAC play. He also led all hitters with 37 hits in ODAC player (63 total) and tied Lynchburg catcher Will Hylton with five homeruns against conference competition.

Morse, a junior from Vienna, Va., is 8-0 overall and 5-0 against league play entering the conference tournament. His eight wins are tied for the most with W&L’s Devereux by any ODAC pitcher this season. He leads the conference with 73 strikeouts and a 9.04 strikeouts-per-nine-innings mark, which includes 50 strikeouts against league competition, leading all players. His ERA currently stands at 2.60 overall (2.84 in league) and he boasts .209 overall and .217 ODAC opponent’s batting averages. Morse has worked seven or more innings in each of his past six starts. He won five straight outings during the middle of SU’s schedule.

Anderson enjoys his second ODAC top coaching award as he continues his 14th season at Shenandoah and 18th year as a collegiate baseball head coach. He previously earned conference coach of the year honors in 2014. Anderson’s Hornets have spent much of the 2017 season rated at or near the top of the national-rankings polls produced by NCBWA/D3baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball. SU is currently ranked third in the South Region by the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee, heading a list of four ODAC teams that includes Randolph-Macon (5th), Washington and Lee (8th) and Virginia Wesleyan (9th). The Hornets (34-6) enter the ODAC Tournament as the top seed in search of a second league crown in just their fifth full season as a member of the conference. Anderson’s career record stands at 566-268-2 (.678) overall and 77-23 (.770) in ODAC regular season play.

Monteverde, a freshman from Pittsburgh, Pa., moved right to the top of VWC’s rotation as he went 6-2 overall and 6-1 in league play on the way to posting an overall-best 2.20 ERA. That mark sits at 2.29 in league play, fifth-best among qualifying hurlers. The Marlins’ southpaw tossed a league-high 59.0 innings against conference foes (73.2 overall) and fanned the second-most batters (38) while on the hill. His 52 overall punchouts rank third. Monteverde enters the tournament having pitched six or more innings in each of his past five starts, going 4-1 during that span.

Hall, a senior from Gladys, Va., stands out both on and off the field for EMU. In the classroom, Hall maintains a 3.61 grade point average as a Recreational Leadership and Sports Studies major with minors in Business Administration and Psychology. He recently earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, which makes him eligible for Academic All-America consideration. He is a multi-honoree on the All-ODAC Academic Team as well as the EMU Dean’s List. On the field, Hall pairs this honor with a nod on the All-ODAC First Team. He led all players with 25 stolen bases, including 11 in league play. He posted the ODAC’s second-best batting average at .447, which he maintained (.412) against conference competition. Hall’s 71 overall hits were tops in the league, while his 35 knocks in ODAC play ranked second. He also carried a .500 OBP, which was second overall. Hall hit safely in 36-of-39 games played, registering a 17-game hitting streak to start the season that included the final two games from 2016, and again went on a double-digit run with a 15-game streak towards the end of the 2017 campaign.
