Mattfield, a sophomore from Suffolk, Va., picked up his fifth win of the season in pitching nationally fifth-ranked Lynchburg to a 4-1 victory over #24 Christopher Newport on Sunday. Mattfield fired 7.1 strong innings, his longest out of the season (previous 6.0). He surrendered one run on three hits. He walked one batter and matched his career-high with seven strikeouts. After a bumpy first inning, Mattfield set down the next six Captains he faced until allowing their lone run in the fourth. He finished the contest retiring 12 straight batters before turning the ball over to the bullpen to shut the door. Mattfield is not 5-0 on the season with a 2.50 ERA in 39.2 innings pitched over eight appearances including five starts. He has struck out 42 batters and issued 11 free passes. Opponents are hitting .174 against him.
