Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER's offense sputtered in the first half before mounting a ferocious second half comeback, but couldn't amass enough firepower as the Eagles dropped a 51-36 contest to Randolph-Macon. The Eagles stormed to within three points of the Yellow Jackets midway through the fourth quarter after trailing by 18 at the break. Gonzalez's career afternoon paced the way for the Eagles while the multi-pronged rushing attack was limited to just 55 yards on the afternoon as Bridgewater went to a pass-heavy offense in the second half.  Gonzalez threw for a school record 406 yards and four touchdowns.  Four different receivers caught touchdown passes.  Cassidy Burns hauled in two scores.  Leigh Bradley, John Lezcano and Shawn Lee caught the others.  Bradley led all receivers with 150 yards through the air.  Bridgewater’s defense struggled against Randolph-Macon's powerful rushing attack, allowing the Yellow Jackets to rush for 217 yards and five scores. After a tough first half, the Eagles held the Yellow Jackets in check for the first 15 minutes of the second half before Randolph-Macon added three scores in the final eight minutes to hand the Eagles their fourth loss of the year. Defensive end Dominic Jeter paced the way for Bridgewater with nine tackles, including a pair of sacks and four tackles for a loss.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Catholic (5-4, 1-4 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Bridgewater and Catholic wrap up their seasons on Saturday with their traditional end of season matchup. The Eagles own a 15-4 advantage in the all-time series and will be looking for their 12th win in a row against the Cardinals when the two teams duke it out on Senior Day at Jopson Field. Catholic's last win over Bridgewater came in 1999 at Jopson Field. The Cardinals claimed the first game in series history by a 32-0 score in 1950. Bridgewater head coach Michael Clark owns an 11-3 record against the Cardinals during his time as head coach.  Last season, Bridgewater scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters en route to a 38-28 win in Washington, D.C.

CATHOLIC finished with 400+ total yards for the fifth time this season, but the Cardinals only rushed the ball for 39 yards. Wes Stringfield totaled a career-high 212 all-purpose yards with 119 receiving and 88 via returns.  Greg Cordivari threw for 373 yards and three scores, but he was sacked three times and threw an interception in the final minute of the first half that was returned 55 yards for a game-tying touchdown.  CUA held the ball for only 19 minutes, including just 3:32 in the fourth quarter.  CUA had four players finish with double-digit stops, including James Fucillo (14), Conor Stueckler (13), Miniard Culpepper (11) and Cole McDonough.  Stueckler also had an INT that he returned 20 yards.  Timbo McGarry and Anthony Albanese both forced fumbles with Albanese also recovering one.  The Cardinals allowed Guilford to convert 60% of its third downs (9-15).  That is the highest conversion rate of any CUA opponent in 2011.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY amassed 446 yards of offense, behind 331 passing yards from Travis Lane, in its 42-35 win over Washington & Lee to seal the 2011 ODAC Championship. The Tigers came out of the gate on point, jumping out to a 21-0 lead at halftime. Lane hit Eric Gorsline for a 29-yard touchdown pass under five minutes into the game. Senior running back Kirk Rohle collected a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter to provide the three score cushion. The Tigers marched down the field on the first drive of the second half, and Lane and Kyle Vance’s 15-yard touchdown connection put the Tigers up 28-0. Vance caught another 15-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, and Lane hit Sean Cavanagh for a 23-yard strike. Lane was 21-of-33 with four touchdowns and no turnovers. Vance and Cavanagh combined for 16 receptions, 278 yards and three touchdowns. Rohle ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. The senior back now has 2,097 career rushing yards and 226 points – which is tied for fifth in school history.  The Tigers gave no ground in the first half of action, holding Washington & Lee scoreless after 30 minutes. The Tiger defense set the tone early, holding the Generals to a three-and-out on the first drive of the game. Later in the half, freshman Josh Doggett picked off Charlie Westal at the Generals’ 22-yard line leading to the third Tiger score. Doggett then made a crucial stop on 4th-and-long in Tiger territory to prevent a score. The Generals made it into the red zone on its next drive, but Sean Stewart recorded Hampden-Sydney’s second pick of the day – this one in the end zone. The General offense hit its stride in the second half and scored on five drives of the half. Hampden-Sydney allowed 271 passing yards but held the Generals to 236 rushing yards – over 100 under their season average. Doggett led the way with 10 tackles, 2.5 for loss and one interception. Stewart and Shreve Rohle each recorded eight tackles. Mark Poydence and Kenny Fryman were also solid with seven stops a piece.

NEXT WEEK: at Randolph-Macon (7-2, 3-2 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon will meet in the 117th edition of "The Game" on Saturday in Ashland. The rivalry is the Oldest Small School Rivalry in the South, with the Tigers holding a 60-45-11 advantage, including nine wins in the last ten meetings. The last time the two rivals met on Day Field, Hampden-Sydney took a 34-27 victory en route to the program’s second-ever 10-0 regular season.  Last year, H-SC rallied from a 14-0 deficit and withstood a furious fourth quarter comeback attempt by R-MC to post a 31-28 victory.  This year’s contest will mark the first time the two teams will play for the Game Ball Trophy in Ashland.  It also will be the final game played on Day Field prior to a major renovation project following the season.

RANDOLPH-MACON running back Thaddeus Scruggs ran for 122 yards and three touchdowns to lead Randolph-Macon to a 51-36 ODAC road victory over Bridgewater College on Saturday. With the win, R-MC improves to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in league play. R-MC has now won seven games two straight years for the first time since the 1997 & 1998 seasons.  Quarterback Zac Naccarato finished the day 10-of-15 passing for 153 yards. Drake Sanders complimented Scruggs' effort with 94 yards and two more touchdowns via the ground.  Naccarato also ran for a score, giving R-MC six rushing touchdowns on the day.  The defense surrendered over 400 yards passing and four touchdowns to the Eagles, but forced three turnovers including an interception in the fourth quarter that led to an R-MC touchdown to provide late cushion.  Jeremy Bowry made nine tackles on the day to lead R-MC and recovered a fumble as well. Will McGhee had seven stops, while Tom Solak made seven tackles and had a sack.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Hampden-Sydney (8-1, 5-0 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
WASHINGTON AND LEE: Saturday's loss to Hampden-Sydney snapped an 11-game winning streak against ODAC competition and kept the Generals from claiming their first 9-win season in 50 years.  The Generals fell behind 28-0 and then scored 35 points in the final 23:01 of the game before running out of time.  Senior quarterback Charlie Westfal tossed three touchdown passes against the Tigers to eclipse Christian Batcheller '00 for the program record for career touchdown passes (45).  If the Generals do not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, Westfal will finish his career with a school-record 6,987 yards of total offense.  He is also fourth all-time in passing yards (4,710), fifth all-time in rushing yards (2,277) and sixth all-time in career rushing touchdowns (24).  Senior placekicker Peter Alston made all five of his PAT attempts against the Tigers and will likely finish his career having made a school-record 92 consecutive extra points.  For his career, Alston has made 98-of-99 PAT attempts, with the only miss being blocked.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
Washington and Lee is idle in the regular season's final week due to its scheduled bye week.  The Generals will learn if they earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Football Tournament following next week's action.
