ODAC Announces 2022 All-ODAC Football Awards

FOREST, Va. --- ODAC champion Randolph-Macon College and Washington and Lee University each garnered two special individual honors with a league-high 17 Yellow Jackets and 15 members of the Shenandoah University squad highlighting the 2022 All-ODAC Football Awards.

R-MC quarterback Drew Campanale earned J. Stokeley Fulton Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Yellow Jackets mentor Pedro Arruza received ODAC Coach of the Year recognition from his peers. W&L linebacker David Onyejekwe was tabbed the Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year with fellow General Robert Poindexter securing ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year distinction from the league's athletic communications personnel. Hampden-Sydney College receiver and return man Mason Cunningham picked up ODAC Rookie of the Year laurels.

A total of 68 players dot this season's all-conference lists. Twenty-six of those honorees are All-ODAC standouts for a second straight season with 13 of those stars represented on the All-ODAC First Team. Offensively, linemen TJ Minter from Hampden-Sydney, Will Jackson from Randolph-Macon, and Logan Moyer from Washington and Lee are first teamers for a second time in as many seasons. Four players moved up from the 2021 All-ODAC Second Team including Shenandoah running back Rashadeen Byrd, Jr., Guilford College receiver Tre Alexander, R-MC lineman Nehemiah Nixon, and Bridgewater College kicker Jackson Hendren. Randolph-Macon receiver David Wallis moved up from the All-ODAC Third Team.

On the other side of the ball, Onyejekwe is a first teamer for consecutive seasons. The same can be said of Shenandoah lineman Mason Caldwell, H-SC safety Will Pickren, and BC punter Garrett Graves. Hornets linebacker Ben Burgan moved up from last year's second team.

Campanale, a junior from Shrewsbury, Mass., leads all quarterbacks at levels of NCAA football in passing efficiency with a rating of 221.4 and in completion percentage at 78.1-percent. Entering Saturday's NCAA Division III Football Championship second round game at Delaware Valley University, Campanale has completed 143-of-183 passes for 2,274 yards and an ODAC-best 23 touchdowns. He has thrown just two interceptions and suffered only four sacks. Twice this season he finished games with a 100-percent completion percentage. His first of those two efforts qualifies as the best in ODAC history as he went 17-of-17 for 256 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-7 win over Bridgewater. Campanale has also proven capable with his feet as he has run for 227 yards and five touchdowns on 48 carries.

Onyejekwe, a senior from Falls Church, Va., is now a two-time All-ODAC First Team honoree. Onyejekwe was an ever-present force for Washington and Lee's defense as he finished with 72 total tackles, seventh-best in the conference. That included 33 solo stops and 8.0 tackles for a loss that cost opponents nine yards of offense. He broke up three total passes and hauled in one interception. Onyejekwe posted three games of 11 or more tackles, including a career-high 12 stops in a late-season loss (13-6) at Bridgewater.

Arruza is in the midst of his 19th season at Randolph-Macon with the Yellow Jackets still competing in the NCAA Division III Tournament. This is Arruza's fifth ODAC top coaching honor, joining the awards he earned in 2008, 2016, 2018, and in spring 2021. The Yellow Jackets are 11-0 this season as they prepare to play at Delaware Valley University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 11 victories are the most in program history, surpassing nine occasions in which R-MC won nine games in any one year. The Yellow Jackets are riding a 17-game winning streak dating back to last season. They hoisted their ODAC record 13th league trophy earlier this month following a 7-0 run through its conference slate. Arruza enters this weekend's contest at DVU with a 124-67 (.649) career-record.

Cunningham, a first-year from Arlington, Va., featured as both a wide receiver and punt returner for the Tigers. He pairs this honor with an All-ODAC Second Team selection. Cunningham finished the season second in the ODAC in receptions with 59 for 660 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 11.2 yards per catch with a long of 42 yards. Cunningham's best game came in a 35-16 victory at Ferrum College. He hauled in 13 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Cunningham returned eight punts this year, collecting 43 yards with a long return of 10 yards.

Poindexter, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., stars both on and off the field for Washington and Lee. In the classroom, Poindexter maintains a 3.752 grade point average as an economics major with a minor in mathematics. The 2021 and 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree is a three-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team and six-time W&L Scholar-Athlete. The President's List winner is a member of Phi Eta Sigma honor society and a group leader for the Williams Investment Group, which manages a portion of W&L's endowment. He has completed an internship at a private equity firm as well as with Truist Financial.

A two-time team captain, Poindexter pairs this honor with a selection to the All-ODAC Second Team this year following a first team selection in 2021. He registered 39 total tackles with 14 solo stops. He posted 6.0 tackles for loss that cost opponents 23 yards of offense. That included 3.0 sacks for 15 yards. Poindexter also forced a fumble and broke up two passes.
