 Offensive Player of the Week

 Nash Nance | Hampden-Sydney | So. | Quarterback
Nance, a sophomore from Calhoun, Ga., had a stellar home debut in leading the Tigers to a 42-20 triumph over Christopher Newport in the first ever meeting between the two football programs. Nance saw only six throws miss the target as he completed 25-of-31 passes for 339 yards and an ODAC early-season game-high five touchdowns without an interception. He also ran the ball seven times for 42 yards. Nance completed passes to 10 different receivers with three of his touchdown passes covering more than 30 yards including a pair of 36-yard strikes to Holton Walker and a 41-yard scoring play to Michael Mey. His efforts led to five touchdowns in seven first-half possessions on the way to a 35-0 lead at the intermission.

 Defensive Player of the Week

Paul Forney | Emory & Henry | Jr. | Linebacker
Forney, a junior from Newton, N.C., helped the Wasps started the season 2-0 by leading a dominating defensive performance in a 21-8 win on the road at Maryville College (Tenn.). Forney led the unit with 12 total tackles (5 solo stops) that included 1.5 tackles for a loss for minus-10 yards. He also teamed up with Michael Shipley on a quarterback sack. Forney's biggest play of the day came in the third quarter when he charred the ball loose from Maryville's Blake Williams and Evan Williamson picked it up at the MC four-yard line and returned it to the end zone for a Wasps' touchdown. On the day, E&H allowed just 166 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER moved to 2-0 on the season with a strong across the board effort in a 33-7 victory over Greensboro. Offensively, the Eagles used excellent field position to put three touchdowns on the board, with each scoring drive starting in Greensboro territory. Sophomore Jacob Wright paced the offense with a 98-yard effort on 13 carries. Wright added a score on a 38-yard scamper in the second quarter. Junior Willie Logan was 7-of-18 for 59 yards on the afternoon, while John Lezcano and Tyler Moneymaker led the way for the receivers with three catches each. Sophomore Jordan Hartman was impressive in the return game, handling the bulk of the punt and kick return duties. Hartman returned a punt 69 yards to the endzone in the second quarter to blow the game open and finished the day with 149 total return yards.  The Eagles' defense put points on the board for the second straight week with a safety and held its second consecutive opponent under 100 yards on the ground. The Eagles forced four straight three and outs to open the game and limited the Greensboro offense to just 240 yards and a 3-of-15 effort on third down. Linebacker Andrew Palmer's seven-tackle effort paced the way for the Eagles, while Darrick Gore and Salem Nganga each chipped in six tackles in the victory.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
The Eagles are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Bridgewater returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 22 vs. Shenandoah University.  Kick-off of that contest is set for 1:00 p.m. at Jopson Field in Bridgewater.  It marks the first game in league play for SU.

CATHOLIC fell to crosstown foe Gallaudet on Friday, marking the first time the Cardinals have lost to the Bison in a series that dates back to 1906. Andrew Ouellette finished with 137 total yards vs. Gallaudet. The junior totaled 104 yards on kick returns, 28 on receiving yards and five on rushes. Ouellette brought back four kicks for 104 yards (26.0 per return) with a long of 35, hauled in three receptions for 28 yards and had one rush for five yards. Nick Cortese was CUA's top rusher with 34 yards on eight attempts. Patrick Thomas led the CUA defense with nine stops, with Conor Stueckler and Mark D'Annibale recovering fumbles. CUA turned the ball over five times, including four interceptions, and lost the time of possession battle by over 13 minutes.

NEXT WEEK: Friday at Carnegie Mellon (2-0, 0-0 UAA) - 7:00 p.m.
CUA hits the road for the first time this season on Friday when the Cardinals head to Pittsburgh to face Carnegie Mellon. CUA downed the Tartans in dramatic fashion last season at home. Jeff Frusciante caught the game-winning touchdown with 2:41 to play and CMU missed a field goal as time expired to send CUA to its third straight come-from-behind win. The Tartans are 2-0 this season with wins over Grove City and Allegheny. CMU scored 34 unanswered points this past weekend to down Allegheny on the road. Tim Kikta totaled 158 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Tartans, who are 2-0 for the for the 10th time since 1999.

EMORY & HENRY's offense picked up 258 yards with 15 first downs on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Maryville, Tenn. on the way to toppin the Scots, 21-8.  The Wasps went to the ground game in the adverse conditions, running the ball 50 times for 159 yards and were 19-for-33 through the air for 99 yards.  The 258 yards of total offense were the fewest by the Wasps since it had 214 against Catholic in 2009.  Emory & Henry scored the first 21 points of the game and held on during a late rally that came up short by the Scots.  Emory & Henry’s defense only allowed 166 yards of offense by Maryville and had three take-aways.  A fumble forced by Paul Forney was recovered by Evan Williamson for a scoop-and-score to put the Wasps up 21-0 in the third quarter.  Forney had 12 tackles including 1.5 for loss, a half-sack, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry. Ross Ellis had seven tackles, one tackle for loss, three pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. Williamson added six tackles to his fumble recovery and touchdown while Devan Sproles had six stops as well. Anthony Jones intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Methodist (1-1, 0-0 USA South) - 1:00 p.m.
Emory & Henry and Methodist University will meet next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Fred Selfe Stadium, marking E&H’s home opener.  It will be the 12th straight year that Emory & Henry and Methodist have met on the gridiron.  The Wasps defeated the Monarchs by a 34-27 score in Fayetteville last year.  E&H’s Kyle Boden threw for 245 yards on 30-for-52 passing with four touchdowns while DaVon Ross caught two passes for scores.  Methodist signal-caller Travis Murphy had 159 yards passing and a touchdown while John Flanagan scored two touchdowns on the ground, rolling up 45 yards.

GUILFORD'S Adam Smith made 13 catches for 134 yards and a touchdown, all game highs, in his first college start. His 13 catches are the most by a freshman in school history. He caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from fellow rookie Matt Pawlowski. Smith made seven catches in the second half, including his fourth-quarter touchdown grab. Smith spent most of the preseason as a quarterback... Freshman Matt Pawlowski completed 31-of-55 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown, the best single-game passing performance by a Guilford freshman since ODAC career passing leader Josh Vogelbach's rookie campaign in 2005... Guilford started six true freshmen on offense Saturday, the quarterback, three receivers and two linemen.  Defensively, sophomore linebacker Robert Smith led all players with a career-high 19 tackles (9 solo), including five behind the line of scrimmage. He also forced a fumble, which he recovered on the Methodist 22-yard line. Smith had the most tackles in a game since Josh Clayton made 20 stops against Catholic Nov. 6, 1999... For the second straight game, Guilford ended the opponent's first possession with an interception. Alex Smith came up with the pick on Methodist's second play of the game... The Quakers' defense has forced six turnovers through its first two games (4 interceptions, 2 fumbles).

NEXT WEEK: at Averett (0-2, 0-0 USA South) - 1:00 p.m.
Guilford seeks its second victory in nine meetings with Averett and its first in Danville, Va. The Quakers won their lone game in the rivalry, 47-13, in 2007 in the first night game at Armfield Athletic Center. In last year's contest, Averett forced four second-half turnovers and hung on for a 35-21 road football win at Guilford. Lawrence Blake made nine catches for 136 yards in the game for the Quakers.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY downed Christopher Newport 42-20 and tallied 484 yards of total offense behind 339 yards and five touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Nash Nance. Nance was 25-31 on the day while throwing to ten different receivers. Sophomore Holton Walker was his top target with 144 yards and two touchdowns – both for 36 yards – on six receptions. Senior Evan King hauled in six passes for 31 yards and a score, and Michael Mey (1 reception, 41 yards) and Jalen Wood (1 reception, 11 yards) each caught touchdown passes. King added 82 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries to post his second straight game of over 100 all purpose yards (113 yards, 2 TD). The Tigers scored in the first 103 seconds of the game, and never looked back holding a 35-0 lead at halftime.  Defensively, the Tigers held Christopher Newport off the board for three quarters but allowed 20 points in the final stanza. Senior Kenny Fryman posted a game-high nine tackles, and Steven Fogleman and Alex Price each posted eight stops. Junior Zach Morgan added five tackles to go with the game’s lone interception. Christopher Newport managed 450 yards on 309 yards passing and 141 rushing.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
The Tiges are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Hampden-Sydney returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 22 vs. Huntingdon College.  Kick-off of that contest is set for 1:00 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.

RANDOLPH-MACON used 212 yards of rushing in the second-half to pull away from Averett  for a 21-6 victory and secure its first win of the season and the first  win on the newly renovated Day Field.  Over 2,600 fans were on hand to see the opening of R-MC's newest facility.  The new Day Field has a turf playing surface, stadium lights, new brick walkways, a new press box, visitor stands, and a walking track.  It is surrounded on the north side by the new Ira Andrews Residence Hall and on the south side by the future Birdsong Residence Hall.  The new Day Field will be home to Randolph-Macon's football and men's and women's lacrosse teams.   Will McGhee led the ground attack with 151 yards in the second-half, finishing the contest with a game-high 183 yards on 25 carries.    R-MC, which ran for 321 yards on the day, also got 73 yards from  quarterback Zac Naccarato and 68 from Drake Sanders.   The Yellow Jacket used a stifling defense in the second-half, allowing the Cougars just 29 total yards in the final 30 minutes of play.   Ian Candelaria led the way with seven tackles for R-MC.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Bethany (0-1, 0-0 PAC) - 1:00 p.m.

Randolph-Macon and Bethany (W.Va.) will square off for the first time on Saturday in Ashland.   The Bison are 0-1 on the year and coming off a bye week.   Bethany dropped a 42-21 game to Centre in Week 1 after the Colonels scored 28 of the final 35 points.  Bethany is also coming off a productive season, as BC’s 5-5 mark last year gave the program back-to-back .500 records for the first time since 2000 and 2001. The Bison have 21 seniors coming back from those teams.

SHENANDOAH and Ferrum played for the first time as non-league members on Saturday, with Ferrum securing its 14th win in 17 overall matchups by a 14-7 score.  Neither team cracked 200 yards offensively as the score was dead-locked 0-0 at the half.  The Panthers notched a pair of scores in the third quarter and Shenandoah got a two-yard run from Andrew Smith early in the final frame, but that's how the game would end.  Carl Joseph led SU on the ground with 67 yards on 18 carries.  Defensively, Josh Rogers led SU with 13 tackles and a forced fumble.  Nick Erdman chipped in 10 tackles including 2.5 tackles for a loss.  Preston Funk and Evan Griffin each recoved fumbles.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Christopher Newport (0-2, 0-0 USA South) - 7:00 p.m.

Shenandoah and Christopher Newport will be meeting for the 12th time on Saturday with CNU holding an 8-3 advantage in the series.  The Captains have won seven straight matchups, dating back to a 14-10 SU victory on October 2, 2004.  That stretch for CNU includes three staight wins in Winchester, the site of Saturday's contest.  CNU enters the contest 0-2, having lost its first two games to Salisbury (40-16) and Hampden-Sydney (42-20).  Last season, SU staged a furious comeback with two touchdowns in the final seven minutes of regulation, but eventually fell in overtime, 27-20.  That was the third game that has gone to OT between the two foes.

WASHINGTON AND LEE'S 28-6 win over Sewanee was its eighth-straight win over the Tigers, the longest winning streak by either team in the series' history.  Senior running back Luke Heinsohn rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Sewanee, moving up the Generals' career leader boards in several categories.  He also kicked four extra points to account for 22 of the Generals' 28 points.  It also extended the Generals' streak of consecutive PATs made to 101 dating back to the 2010 season.  He moved up to No. 4 on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,507 career yards and fifth on the all-time scoring list with 188 points.  He can overtake Jack Martin '07 for fourth place with five more points.  Senior running back Brett Murray tallied 89 all-purpose yards against Sewanee to pass 4,000 all-purpose yards for his career.  He is currently fourth all-time at W&L with 4,017 yards.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Centre (2-0, 0-0 SCAC) - 7:00 p.m.
Washington and Lee and Centre will be meeting for the 61st time, with the Colonels holding a 36-22-2 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1897 season.  Centre has won five of the last seven meetings, including a 42-35 win last season in Danville, Ky.  The two teams combined for 891 yards of total offense as the Colonels recovered from a 14-0 first quarter deficit to claim the victory.  Brett Murray rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown and caught three passes for 45 yards to lead the W&L offense.  Running back Monte Scotton rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Centre offense.
