 Offensive Player of the Week

 Andrew Smith| Shenandoah| So.| Running Back
Smith, a sophomore from Haymarket, Va., helped the Hornets to their first win of the season, which also marked the first victory under new head coach Scott Yoder. Smith led all ODAC runners with 185 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in Saturday's come-from-behind win at Ferrum. He also caught for passes for 33 yards and another score. Both of Smith's touchdowns came as SU recovered from a 21-7 second-quarter deficit on the way to a 43-29 triumph. He added 23 yards of returns, giving him 241 all-purpose yards on the day, the highest in a single game in the ODAC so far this season.

 Defensive Player of the Week

 Byron Mitchell| Shenandoah| Sr.| Def. Back
Mitchell, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., helped Shenandoah pick up its first win of the 2013 season and the head coaching career of Scott Yoder with a 43-29 win over Ferrum. Mitchell made seven stops with a tackle for a loss from the Hornets' defensive backfield, but his two biggest plays came defending special teams. Late in the second quarter, Mitchell returned possession to SU by forcing and recovering a fumble on a punt return. On Ferrum's next possession, Mitchell blocked a punt and the resulting loose ball went out of the back of the end zone for a safety. That jumpstarted a run of 22 unanswered points from the Hornets as they out-scored Ferrum, 36-8, over the final 33 minutes of the game.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER moved to 2-0 on the year with a 38-13 victory on Saturday afternoon against Greensboro. Bridgewater mixed a stout run game with another strong defensive effort to pick up a 25-point victory over the Pride. Jacob Wright eclipsed the century mark with 109 yards on 18 carries and bolted for two scores. Bridgewater's defense scored its third touchdown of the season with Sammy Coleman's 95 yard interception return for a score in the fourth quarter.  The defense has also done its job of keeping points off the board.  Greensboro scored with 5:31 on the third quarter clock on Saturday, snapping a string of six scoreless quarters and nearly 100 minutes allowing a point this season.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Ferrum (0-2, 0-0 USA South) - 1:00 p.m.
Bridgewater and Ferrum meet for the 15th time on Saturday with the Panthers owning a 10-4 advantage in the all-time series.  The two squads last met in 2011 with Ferrum coming away with a 37-6 victory in Ferrum.  The Eagles last win came in 2010 via a 35-24 score at Jopson Field.  Ferrum's two losses this season have come to ODAC foes Emory & Henry (49-13) and Shenandoah (43-29).

CATHOLIC was idle last week on its scheduled bye.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Carnegie Mellon (1-1, 0-0 UAA) - 7:00 p.m. on Friday night
The Cardinals return to the field on Friday evening for their home opener in Washington, D.C.  Catholic welcomes Carnegie Mellon to the nation's capital for the fifth meeting between the two squads in a series that began in 1992.  The Tartans lead the all-times, 3-1, with Catholic securing its win via a 29-28 scoreline in 2011.  Last season, CMU came away with a 35-17 victory in Pittsburgh.  In that contest, running back Mike Pitsenberger led the CUA offense with 127 yards on the ground.  Linebacker Conor Stueckler led the defense with 10 tackles.

EMORY & HENRY opens the season 2-0 for the fifth-straight year...With the win, the Wasps pick up their third-straight over Maryville but still trail the all-time series 25-28-2...Emory & Henry picked up 19 first downs with 349 yards of total offense...Senior quarterback Kyle Boden was 25-for-37 passing for 286 yards and three scores as the running game stalled (63 yards on 33 carries)...Boden found junior wideout Josh Smith 10 times for 85 yards while senior Cleo Cooper caught five passes for 129 yards and a touchdown ... Senior wide receiver Chad Williams and junior Lucas Kirby each reeled in catches for scores...The Emory & Henry defense used a bend-not-break philosophy as it allowed 440 yards of total offense …The Wasps took advantage of the Scots’ missed field goal and failed fourth-down conversion maintain a 7-7 halftime score…Maryville’s balanced attack gave E&H some trouble as the Scots got 223 yards on the ground and 217 through the air…the Wasps got the big play they were looking for midway through the fourth quarter as sophomore corner Ryan Byrd telegraphed a pass and took it 28 yards for a touchdown which would put the game out of reach....junior linebacker Paul Forney led Emory & Henry with 13 tackles and added one-half tackle for loss

NEXT WEEK: at Methodist (2-0, 0-0 USA South) - 1:00 p.m.
Emory & Henry and Methodist University will meet for the 13th time in series history…The Wasps have played their denominational rivals every year since beginning the series in 2001…Emory & Henry leads the all-time series, 8-4, and finds itself amidst a six-game winning run against the Monarchs…Last year, Kyle Boden threw for 364 yards and two touchdowns (Chad Williams, Nate Dorton) while Kasey Jones had a pair of rushing scores and Matt Turchin kicked a pair of field goals (30, 37)…Methodist defeated Guilford College by a 31-34 score Saturday.

GUILFORD running back Josh Schow enjoyed a career day with 170 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, all career- and game-high totals... his 170 yards on the ground are the most by a Quaker since Mike Williams had 182 rushing yards versus Southern Virginia in 2009... his 26 carries were the most by a Quaker since 2010 when Bailey Crego had 26 totes versus Catholic... has four rushing TDs in two games. Last year Matt Pawlowski led Guilford with six rushing TDs in 10 games.... Guilford ran 96 offensive plays at Methodist, the second-highest total in school history... Matt Pawlowski had a hand in 68 of those plays, the 10th-highest total in school history... Adam Smith made a game-high 10 catches for 98 yards.  Tyler Hunt broke All-American Christian Adams' school record with an 81-yard punt at Methodist Saturday. The previous record of 76 yards stood since 2003. Hunt averaged 57.3 yards on three punts and also booted two field goals, including a career-long 43-yarder, which is the Quakers' longest field goal in the school's NCAA Division III era... Hunter English and Alex Smith shared team-high tackles honors versus Methodist with nine stops apiece. English had 1.5 tackles behind the line and also nabbed his first interception of the season.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Averett (0-2, 0-0 USA South) - 7:00 p.m.
Guilford opens its home slate and closes the non-conference portion of its schedule with an evening game against Averett. The Quakers trail in the all-time series with Averett, 7-2, although they did win last year in Danville, Va., 45-35. The victory ended a string of four straight losses to the Cougars. Pawlowski threw three touchdowns and Mike Williams ran for 151 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in the game. Guilford defeated Averett in Greensboro in 2007, 47-13, and is 1-3 all-time versus the Cougars in the Armfield Athletic Center.  Averett's two losses this season have come to ODAC foes Hampden-Sydney (42-12) and Randolph-Macon (33-6).

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY'S offense put up over 400 yards on the day, but eight turnovers (five interceptions, three fumbles) limited Hampden-Sydney to just one touchdown and seven total points. Nash Nance completed a school record 45 passes for 364 yards while Holton Walker tied the school record for receptions with 15 and had 138 yards. Defense was the name of the game for the Tigers as Christopher Newport was limited to 272 yards and a 2-14 output on third downs while also forcing ad recovering two fumbles. Josh Doggett had a team-high 14 tackles with 2.5 for a loss along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Robert Stack added on 11 tackles while Zach Morgan had two pass breakups.

NEXT WEEK: at Coast Guard (0-2, 0-0 NEFC) - 1:00 p.m.
Hampden-Sydney travels to New London, Conn., for the inaugural meeting with the Coast Guard Academy. Coast Guard’s Athletic Director, Tim Fitzpatrick, is a 1981 Hampden-Sydney graduate. CGA enters the game having lost its first two contests, falling 21-17 to St. Lawrence and 27-20 to Merchant Marine.

RANDOLPH-MACON secured its first win of 2013 with a 33-6 triumph at Averett University.  Running back Will McGhee was responsible for a pair of touchdowns as he carried the ball 23 times for 123 yards.  Quarterback Zac Naccarato tossed a pair of touchdown passes, more than enough for a defense that registered three sacks and surrendered a lone first quarter touchdown. Abel Simpson led the unit with six tackles, while Eric Long intercepted a pass and Calvin Davis forced a fumble.  Kicker Colin McFadden connected on a pair of field goals covering 37 and 26 yards.

NEXT WEEK: at Bethany (0-2, 0-1 PAC) - 1:00 p.m.

Randolph-Macon and Bethany (W.Va.) will square off for just the second time, with R-MC winning the first contest, 49-33, in Ashland last season.  In that game, Will McGhee and Drake Sanders combined for 264 yards and two touchdowns rushing, while Zac Naccarato threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers.  The defense recorded a pair of sacks and forced two turnovers.

SHENANDOAH notched the first win of the Scott Yoder-era with a 43-29 come-from-behind win at Ferrum.  SU trailed 21-7 in the second quarter before running off 22 unanswered points on the way to the win.  Running back Andrew Smith led all ODAC runners with 185 yards on the ground, which proved the bulk of 241 all-purpose yards, also an ODAC high.  He notched a pair of touchdowns (1 rush, 1 rec.).  Quarterback Drew Ferguson threw for two touchdowns and ran in another.  Defensive, Byron Mitchell got the comeback started with a blocked punt for a safety.  He also forced and recovered a fumble while collecting seven tackles.  Michael Messick led the unit with 10 tackles, while Ian Griffin had a pair of sacks.

NEXT WEEK: at Christopher Newport (2-0, 0-0 USA South) - 7:00 p.m.

Shenandoah and Christopher Newport will be meeting for the 13th time on Saturday with CNU holding an 9-3 advantage in the series.  The Captains have won eight straight matchups, dating back to a 14-10 SU victory on October 2, 2004.  That stretch for CNU includes four staight wins in Winchester, the site of last season's contest.  CNU enters the contest 2-0, having defeated Salisbury (17-10) and Hampden-Sydney (17-7).  Last season, SU got a 47-yard touchdown run from Andrew Smith in the second quarter, but that would be the Hornets only score of the game as they fell to the Captains, 20-7.

WASHINGTON AND LEE was idle last week on its scheduled bye.

NEXT WEEK: at Centre (2-0, 0-0 SAA) - 2:30 p.m.
Washington and Lee and Centre will be meeting for the 62nd time, with the Colonels holding a 36-23-2 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1897 season.  Centre has won five of the last eight meetings, but the Generals came away with a 34-16 win in Lexington last season behind 338 yards rushing and some timely passing.  Brett Murray ran for 120 yards and touchdown while Luke Heinsohn sprang for 97 yards and two scores.  Quarterback Nick Lombardo hit tight end Alex Evans with a pair of touchdown passes.
