 Offensive Player of the Week

 Kyle Boden| Emory & Henry| Sr.| Quarterback
Boden, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., led the Wasps to a 61-22 triumph over Methodist, setting ODAC and Emory & Henry records in the process. The 61 points scored mark the most during the tenure of head coach Don Montgomery and the most since the Wasps topped Maryville, 61-7, in 1990. Boden set a new conference record with by completing 29-of-31 passes for a 93.5 completion percentage. He covered 382 yards thru the air, tossing five touchdown passes. Boden also added a two-point conversion and posted a 243.83 passer rating for the game. He notched a sixth touchdown via a two-yard touchdown run as part of 24 yards rushing. Boden's 406 yards of total offense are the fourth-most in program history.

 

 Defensive Player of the Week

 Josh Doggett| Hampden-Sydney| Jr.| Linebacker
Doggett, a junior from Mechanicsville, Va., helped spearhead a dominating defensive effort as Hampden-Sydney returned to the win column with a 49-7 win over Coast Guard. Dogget and the Tigers held CGA to just seven first downs and 80 yards of total offense, including minus-10 rushing. Doggett came away with two tackles, both behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 11 yards. He also came away with a pair of turnovers. He forced a fumble in the second quarter that led to a Tigers' field goal for a 29-0 advantage. He ended Coast Guard's next possession prematurely as he intercepted a pass and returned 35 yards to the CGA 2-yard line. H-SC punched it in on the next play to make it 36-0 Tigers.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER senior receiver Cassidy Burns hauled in a career high 11 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown to lead Bridgewater to a 51-28 victory over Ferrum on a rain-soaked Saturday at the Jopson Athletic Complex. Aside from the play of Burns, senior quarterback Willie Logan also had a strong day, throwing for a career-high 350 yards on 22-of-36 passing to help move Bridgewater to a 3-0 record on the year and an unblemished mark in non-conference play.  Running back Jacob Wright ran for 91 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles were a perfect 6-for-6 in red-zone opportunities on the day. Bridgewater owned the time of possession battle by a 38:56 to 21:04 margin on the afternoon and outgained Ferrum, 538-to-309 as the Eagles ran 81 plays on the afternoon. Bridgewater was 7-of-14 on third down while the Bridgewater defense did its job getting off of the field, limiting the Panthers to a 2-of-11 performance on third down.  Andrew Palmer led with eight tackles and a sack.  Darrick Gore forced a fumble, while Lucas Elliott intercepted a pass.

CATHOLIC returned from its bye week with 19-7 triumph over Carnegie Mellon in the Cardinals home opener. Running back Mike Pitsenberger led a 203-yard CUA rushing effort with 149 yards on the ground.  Quarterback E.J. Montgomery went 15-of-25 for 132 yards thru the air.  He and Andrew Ouellette connected on a 15-yard TD pass in the third quarter.  The Cardinals' first touchdown came via special teams as Ben Powers blocked a punt that was recovered by Leif Colberg in the end zone eary in the first quarter.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Anna Maria (1-1, 0-0 ECAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Catholic and Anna Maria College will be meeting for the first time on Saturday.  The AMCats enter the contest off a 55-49 win over Maine Maritime.  The Anna Maria program is in the midst of just its fifth season, registering a 5-36 record over its first 41 games thru this past weekend.
 
EMORY & HENRY Emory & Henry picked up 25 first downs and 600 yards of total offense, the most total offense since October 16, 2004 when the Wasps rolled up 622 yards against Randolph-Macon … Senior quarterback Kyle Boden was 29-for-31 passing for 382 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 24 yards and another score … It is the fourth most passing yards in a game by an E&H player ever and also the fourth most total offense (406 yards) by an E&H player ever ... His completion percentage (93.5) set a new ODAC record … With the win, the Wasps pick up their seventh-straight over Methodist and lead the all-time series 9-4 ... Boden found junior wideout Josh Smith 12 times for 153 yards and two touchdowns while senior Cleo Cooper, senior tight end Kenton Williams and junior wideout Lucas Kirby each had touchdown receptions … E&H also had four touchdowns on the ground led by junior Chris Edwards’ 75-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.  The Emory & Henry defense allowed just 68 yards of total offense in the first half as it helped the offense to a 36-7 lead at the break … The Wasps forced two turnovers in the first quarter as they went up 22-0 to open the game … Methodist gained 281 of its 349 yards of offense against the Emory & Henry defensive reserves.  Sophomore corner Ryan Byrd led Emory & Henry with eight tackles (six solo) and added an interception in the end zone for his second pick in as many weeks … Senior defensive lineman Scott Hill also had eight stops on the day as 17 different Wasps had three or more tackles … Junior safety Robbie Gaines and senior corner Anthony Jones each had interceptions while junior linebacker Paul Forney forced and recovered a fumble … As a team the Wasps totaled eight tackles for loss including three sacks.

GUILFORD running back Josh Schow tied the school record with 41 carries and rushed for a career-high 191 yards and two touchdowns versus Averett... the 191 yards ranks seventh on Guilford's single-game rushing list.... scored on touchdown runs of three and 11 yards, extending his streak of two-touchdown games to three... his 191 yards were the most by a Quakers' back since David Heggie's '98 school record 265 yards in 1998… Saturday's rainy game was marred by 14 combined fumbles, six of which traded possessions. Averett scored touchdowns off of all three of its recoveries and Guilford scored two touchdowns. The Quakers' third drive set up by an Averett fumble ended inside the Cougars' one-yard line…Defensively, linebacker Robert Smith led with eight tackles... he also forced and recovered two fumbles, one of which led to a Guilford touchdown... the other fumble came in the fourth quarter, setting up a drive that ended on Averett's goal line…Hunter English also made eight stops (4 solo).

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY'S scored early and often on a balanced offense of 310 passing yards and 276 rushing yards, and claimed a 49-7 win over Coast Guard behind four touchdowns from junior running back Brady Macko. Macko carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards and three scores while catching one touchdown pass for six yards. Senior Mitch Pereira and sophomore Tyler Fowler also had successful running days, each scoring touchdowns while rushing for a combined 143 yards on 33 carries. Through the air, junior quarterback Nash Nance was 20-for-34 for 282 yards, two scores, and no interceptions. Junior Holton Walker was again the top receiver with eight catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. Nance spread the ball around with nine other receivers catching at least one pass. The Tigers’ offensive onslaught occurred mainly in the first 30 minutes of the game with Hampden-Sydney taking a 43-0 lead into the intermission.  On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers held Coast Guard to just 80 yards of total offense, including -10 rushing yards, and seven first downs. The defense also held the Bears scoreless as Coast Guard’s touchdown came on an interception return. On third downs, Hampden-Sydney was flawless, holding the Bears to an 0-for-12 conversion mark. They also forced three turnovers with two fumble recoveries and one interception. Nick Browning and Nick Martin led the way with five tackles. Junior linebacker Josh Doggett had a productive day with two tackles – both for loss – one forced fumble, and one interception that was returned 35 yards setting up a Tiger touchdown.

RANDOLPH-MACON running back Will McGhee ran wild on Bethany (W.Va.) as he toted the ball 42 times for 296 yards, the third highest rushing total in league history.  His efforts, which included a pair of 37-yard touchdowns runs and a 16-yard scoring dash, helped R-MC pull out a 36-28 decision.  Jesse Knepp and Zac Naccarato also notched touchdowns runs.  Calvin Davis led the defense with six tackles and a pair of sacks.  Tom Solak forced a fumble and Abel Simpson picked off a pass.

SHENANDOAH ran into a Christopher Newport offense that put up 471 yards on the way to a 34-6 win.  SU running back Andrew Smith carried the ball 15 times for 78 yards to lead the Hornet offense.  Quarterback Justin Neff threw for 138 yards and a touchdown to Brandon Adams.  Defensively, Byron Mitchell led the unit with 10 stops including a quarterback sack.  Mitchell and Neff, who also serves as the SU punter, connected on a fake punt pass to extend the Hornets' drive leading to their fourth quarter touchdown.

WASHINGTON AND LEE ran for 418 yards in its 37-28 loss to Centre on Saturday.  It was the 16th time that W&L has achieved 400 yards rushing in a game since 2010, but was the first time that W&L lost when rushing for 400 or more yards.  With the loss, W&L fell to 9-23 all-time against the Colonels on the road.   The Generals did not complete a pass against Centre, going 0-for-9 passing with one interception.
Senior running back Luke Terna rushed for a career-best 157 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.  His 242 yards rushing this season already eclipse his career total (222) heading into the season.  Defensively, Peter Partee led the unit with 13 tackles including a half-sack.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Sewanee (1-2, 0-0 SAA) - 1:30 p.m.
Washington and Lee and Sewanee will be meeting for the 62nd time, with the Generals holding a 39-22 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1892 season.  W&L has won each of the last eight meetings, the longest winning streak by either team in the 121 years these two teams have played.  W&L won last season’s meeting by a score of 28-6 in Sewanee, Tenn.  The Tigers have not won at Wilson Field since 1986, dropping each of the last 12 games played in Lexington.
