 Offensive Player of the Week

 Will McGhee| Randolph-Macon| Sr.| Running Back
McGhee, a senior from Fishersville, Va., played a prototypical feature back role for the second time in as many games as the Yellow Jackets topped Emory & Henry, 45-20. McGhee proved a workhorse and game-breaker in carrying the ball 28 times and churning out 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He has eclipsed 200 yards in each of R-MC's past two games, registering five touchdown runs in the process. McGhee's first TD run on Saturday was for four yards, but he electrified the crowd at Day Field with his second scoring run, which covered a school-record 99 yards as the game’s final touchdown. Over his past two games, McGhee has racked up 514 of his ODAC-leading 679 rushing yards. He also leads the ODAC with 169.8 rushing yards per game.

 Defensive Player of the Week

 Byron Mitchell| Shenandoah| Sr.| Def. Back
Mitchell, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., picks up his second weekly award of the season after helping the Hornets to their first-ever ODAC win on Saturday. Mitchell posted an ODAC-high 13 tackles, including 11 solo stops. He also made 3.5 stops in the Bridgewater backfield, 2.5 of which were quarterback sacks. One of his sacks forced an Eagles' fumble, which led to the second of two Andrew Smith first-half touchdown runs. Mitchell struck again in the fourth quarter after BC had already put up 13 points in a comeback bid. Mitchell forced and recovered a fumble with 4:15 to play, helping SU secure the win. Mitchell is currently tied for first in the ODAC with 38 tackles, and his three forced fumbles top the league charts.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER dropped its ODAC opener on Saturday night in Winchester in a 29-20 loss to the Shenandoah Hornets. The loss for the Eagles was the first-ever at Shentel Stadium and snapped a four-game winning streak against the Hornets. For Shenandoah, the win was the first conference victory for the Hornets as a member of the ODAC.  Bridgewater’s offense was limited to 133 first-half yards as the Shenandoah Hornets defense held the Eagles in check for the opening 45 minutes of play. The Eagles exploded late in the contest as the offense tried to mount a comeback, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles fell to the Hornets for just the second time in series history.  Defensively, Andrew Palmer led the way with 11 tackles, including five solo stops. On the offensive side of the ball, Willie Logan threw for 276 yards on 27-of-50 passing. Logan added two rushing touchdowns on the evening.

NEXT WEEK: at Hampden-Sydney (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Bridgewater and Hampdne-Sydney meet for the 70th overall time at H-SC on Saturday, with the Tigers owning the advantage in the all-time series with a 56-13 record against the Eagles. The Tigers have won the last six games in series history with Bridgewater’s last victory coming in 2006 at Jopson Field in a 31-13 victory. Bridgewater’s last victory at Hampden-Sydney came in 2005 by a 31-24 tally with the victory helping to catapult the Eagles to their sixth conference title.  Last year, Hampden-Sydney led 24-0 until midway thru fourth quarter when BC got the board for a 24-7 final score and H-SC win.  Holton Walker caught a pair of touchdown passes as part of a 10-catch 181-yard receiving day.

CATHOLIC suffered its first loss of the season in a 39-27 setback at Hampden-Sydney.  Quarterbacks EJ Montgomery and TJ Tutone each fired a pair of touchdown passes, with Tanner Keefe (4 rec. for 60 yds) the recipient of two scores.  Nich Echiveria and Andrew Ouellette also caught scoring passes.  Conor Stueckler led the defense with 10 tackles, while Anthony Albanese recorded a pair of quarterback sacks.  Richard Roach and Andrew Pitsenberger intercepted passes for the Cardinals.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Randolph-Macon (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) - 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening (10/11)
Randolph-Macon and Catholic will square off for the 35th time on Friday evening in Washington, D.C., continuing a series that began in 1916.  R-MC leads the all-time series 20-13-1 including a six game-winning streak dating back to the 2007 season.  Saturday's game marks the second straight Friday evening contest.  Last season, R-MC posted a 45-12 victory in the first night game at the new Day Field.  H-back Vance Hendren accounted for five Yellow Jacket touchdowns as he ran in four and caught a scoring pass.  R-MC's defense held CUA to 222 yards of total offense behind nine stops and three sacks by Calvin Davis.  Conor Stueckler led all players with 12 tackles, including nine solo.

EMORY & HENRY picked up 294 yards of total offense on just 12 first downs, the least total offense of the season, as the Wasps fell, 45-20, to W&L for their first loss of the year … Senior quarterback Kyle Boden was 23-for-37 passing for 223 yards and one touchdowns ... Boden found junior wideout Josh Smith eight times for 48 yards while senior wide receiver Chad Williams caught five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown … Junior running back Joe Vaughn had 42 yards on eight carries and threw a one-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Kenton Williams while redshirt freshman fullback Jonathan Turpin punched one in from a yard out for E&H’s other score.  The Emory & Henry defense allowed 549 yards of total offense as Randolph-Macon scored six touchdowns on the afternoon … The Wasps forced three turnovers but could not stop the Yellow Jacket’s ground game (362 yards and three touchdowns).  Junior linebacker Paul Forney had nine tackles, an interception and a pass breakup while sophomore corner Ryan Byrd added seven solo stops … Senior corner Anthony Jones made six tackles including one for a loss while sophomore linebacker Rennel Marshall had five tackles on the afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Washington and Lee (3-1, 0-1 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Washington and Lee and Emory & Henry will be meeting for the 43rd time, with the Wasps holding a 28-14 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1921 season.  E&H won 19-straight meetings between 1983-2001, but the Generals have recovered to win seven of the last nine encounters, including each of the last three.  Last season, W&L rushed for an ODAC record 503 yards in producing a 45-28 win over the Wasps at Wilson Field.  Nick Lombardo (164 yds) and Luke Heinsohn (138 yds) combined for 302 yards, but the biggest individual day went to E&H’s Joe Vaughn, who racked up 171 yards and a pair of scores.

GUILFORD ended a four-game losing streak to Washington and Lee thanks in large part to a defensive effort that held the Generals to 140 yards below their season average, which ranked second in the country... the seven points allowed marked the fewest scored by W&L against the Quakers since 2003... Robert Smith spearheaded the unit with a season-high 12 tackles, his 12th career game with at least 10 stops.  JerMario Gooch picked off his second pass of the season, tying him with three others atop the conference charts.  Offensively, Josh Schow rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown in Guilford's win at Washington and Lee, his fourth straight game with at least 100 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. He already ranks eighth in school history with seven rushing touchdowns this season. Schow started the week ranked fourth among NCAA Division III rushing yards per game leaders... Kicker Tyler Hunt matched the school record with three field goals in the Quakers' 16-7 road win over Washington and Lee... narrowly missed a 46-yard kick, which hit the crossbar... averaged 56.5 yards on two punts... kicked a PAT to finish with 10 of Guilford's 16 points in the game.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Shenandoah (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Guilford and Shenandoah will be meeting for just the second time on Saturday, with the upcoming contest the first between the two squads in Greensboro.  The Quakers won the first meeting between the two schools last season, 20-7. Matt Pawlowski threw TD passes of 13 and 79 yards to Trey Billian. Guilford held the Hornets to 2-of-15 on third-down opportunities and didn't let the hosts on the scoreboard until there were five minutes left in the game. Robert Smith made 13 tackles to lead a defense that allowed just 206 total offensive yards.  While Shenandoah is new to Guilford, it is not new to Greensboro, having played a number of years against Greensboro College as members of the USA South Athletic Conference.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY started ODAC play on the right note with a 39-27 win over Catholic while tallying 530 yards of total offense with 294 through the air and 236 on the ground – the third time in four games in which the Tigers have rushed for over 200 yards. Junior running back Brady Macko had his second consecutive strong day, rushing for 171 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Junior quarterback Nash Nance continued to find the end zone, throwing two touchdown passes with 294 yards on 24-of-43 accuracy while also rushing for three more scores with 63 yards on 18 carries. Holton Walker had his fifth straight 100-yard day dating back to last season with 108 yards and two scores on six catches. The Tigers scored the first three touchdowns of the game, but failed PATs kept them at 18-0. Catholic bounced back with two unanswered touchdowns to put an 18-13 score on the board at half. The second half was much of the same, with the Tigers scoring the first three touchdowns, followed by Catholic’s two.  Defensively, the Tigers allowed 304 yards of total offense on 201 passing and 103 rushing. Hampden-Sydney also forced six three-and-outs on the day. Individually, Tyler Ikwild and John Moore led the way with seven tackles each. Josh Doggett notched six tackles, including 3.0 for-loss. Shreve Rohle also had six tackles with an interception and a half-sack. Michael Marquez and Zach Morgan also had interceptions. Morgan also broke up four additional passes.

NEXT WEEK: at Catholic (3-1, 0-1 ODAC) - 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening (10/11)

SHENANDOAH topped Bridgewater, 29-20, on Saturday, notching its first ODAC win since beginning a full-time member of the conference in July 2012.  Offensively, running back Andrew Smith ran for 72 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns that saw SU building a 22-7 halftime advantage.  That lead grew to 29-7 in the third quarter when Miles Green found paydirt on a 4th-and-4 play with a 32-yard catch-and-run.  Justin Neff threw two touchdown passes on the day, with the other going to Devon Newton.  Defensive back Byron Mitchell led the defense with a packed stat line, racking up a game-high 13 stops (11 solo) that included 3.5 TFL's and 2.5 quarterback sacks.  He also forced a pair of fumbles, the latter of which he also recovered to stop BC on its second to last possession as the Eagles attempted a fourth quarter comeback.  Ian Griffin and Jake Payne recorded 1.5 sacks each, while Bayvon Young forced a fumble and intercepted a pass, and Darryll Gasden and Evan Griffin recovered fumbles.

NEXT WEEK: at Guilford (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.

WASHINGTON AND LEE's loss to Guilford snapped a 16-game home winning streak for the Generals, the third-longest streak in Division III.  W&L's last loss at home occurred on September 25, 2010, a 20-10 setback against Averett.   The loss also snapped a four-game winning streak against Guilford.  The last time GC had defeated W&L was a 34-27 win on October 25, 2008.  The seven points scored by W&L marked the team's lowest scoring output since a 35-7 loss to Franklin & Marshall to start the 2010 season.  The Generals were held scoreless in the first half, the first time that had occurred since trailing Hampden-Sydney, 21-0, in the 2011 season finale.  First-year running back Marshall Hollerith eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second-straight game, totaling 133 yards on 24 carries.
