 Offensive Player of the Week
 Lucas Morley| Catholic| Jr.| Receiver
Morley, a junior from Olney, Md., helped erase the memory of McDaniel College's 34-31 comeback victory in the 2014 season-opener with some late heroics of his own. Morley saved his best play in the Cardinals' 2015 lid-lifter for the fourth quarter as he helped lead Catholic to a 34-33 come-from-behind victory over the Green Terror. Morley hauled in three of his four touchdowns on the day in the final 13:02 to the game, including the deciding score with 0:13 on the clock to complete a 49-yard scoring play. Morley had scores of 18 and nine yards in the frame, adding to the eight-yard touchdown he recorded late in the third quarter. Morley finished with a career-high 13 receptions for 210 yards.

   Defensive Player of the Week
 Ryan Byrd| Emory & Henry| Sr.| Strong Safety
Byrd, a senior from Grottoes, Va., was all over the field in the Wasps' 55-7 season-opening rout of Ferrum College on Saturday. He adjusted quickly -- and well -- to his new role as strong safety in Week 1, moving from corner during the offseason. He made a total of 13 tackles against Panther ball-carriers, including eight solo stops. Byrd also came away 2.5 tackles for a loss, costing Ferrum 15 yards of offense. That total included a quarterback sack for a loss of eight yards. His efforts helped spearhead a defense that was on the field for nearly 37 minutes, but allowed only 233 yards and forced six turnovers.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER trailed Gettsyburg, 9-3, at the half, but the floodgates opened for the Bullets in the final 30 minutes on the way to a 49-10 scoreline.  Gettysburg ran for 574 yards on the day with a pair of individuals eclipsing 170 yards.  Bridgewater quarterback Ross Rushing finished the day an efficient 18-of-27 for 212 yards and a touchdown pass to Keith Jennings.  Jennings hauled in eight total passes for 121 yards to lead all receivers. Don Mills, Jr., led the BC defense with seven tackles, while Chance Morris recorded a sack.

NEXT WEEK: at Greensboro (0-1, 0-0 USA South) - 7:00 p.m.
Bridgewater heads to Greensboro on Saturday evening to take on The Pride, who fell to Guilford College by a 77-13 score in the Gate City Coup Bowl in the season opener. Bridgewater leads the all-time series with Greensboro, 3-0, including a 43-14 triumph at Jopson Field in 2014.  Matthew Piscarcik threw for three touchdowns in that game, while Ross Rushing tossed a fourth TD strike.  Jayme Perry caught two of them, while Keith Jennings and Cliff Woodard hauled in one each.

CATHOLIC trailed McDaniel College, 30-14, following the Green Terror's final touchdown of the game at 13:02 of the fourth quarter, but the Catholic offense found the end zone three times in the remaining minutes to post a 34-33 victory on the road in Westminster, Md. Receiver Lucas Morley and quarterback TJ Tutone hooked up 13 times on the day, including four touchdowns.  Three of those scores account for all CUA's touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 49-yard play with 14-seconds left to complete the comeback.  Morley finished with 210 yards receiving, while Tutone threw for 356 yards and the four scores to Morley. Matt Perno led on the ground with 42 yards, while Tutone added 38 yards.  Defensively, Ross Sanford led the unit with 13 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss.  Dave Zarkoski made 12 stops including two TFLs.  Anthony Sferra led all ODAC players with 1.5 sacks.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Rochester (N.Y.) (0-0, 0-0 Liberty) - 1:00 p.m.
Catholic begins a new series in its long football history as the Cardinals welcome the University of Rochester to Washington, D.C., on Saturday.  It will mark the first game of the season for the Yellow Jackets, who play out of the Liberty League.  UR went 5-4 in 2014, including a 3-4 showing in league play.

EMORY & HENRY opened the 2015 season with a 55-7 win over Ferrum at Fred Selfe Stadium Saturday …  The Wasps made it nine-straight wins to open the season against the Panthers and ran the all-time series to 22-9 … The 55 points scored by the Wasps are the most against a Ferrum team and the 48-point margin of victory also marked a record in the series … It was also the fifth-straight time that Emory & Henry has scored 40 or more points against Ferrum … E&H only managed 23:17 of possession, but was clinically efficient, running 73 plays for an average of 6.1 yards per play … Chris Thompson ran for 82 yards and a touchdown to lead the Wasps rushers … Kevin Saxton threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns … Kelman Simpson ran the ball three times for 44 yards and caught seven passes for 66 yards and a touchdown … Isaiah Rodgers (20 yards rushing) and Sam Wagner (12 yards rushing) also had scores for the Wasps … Nick Webb (2 rec., 42 yards) and Ashton Cline (1 rec., 14 yards) also caught touchdown passes … Skyler Simcox hit field goals of 30 and 33 yards and converted all seven of his extra-point attempts.  Defensively, held Ferrum to just 3.2 yards per play on the afternoon, allowing the fewest points since the final game of the 2011 season when it allowed six points by Guilford … The Panthers only reached the red zone twice in the game … E&H forced Ferrum to seven drives of three or fewer plays, turning the Panthers over six times …Ryan Byrd led all players with 13 tackles and added 2.5 tackles for a loss including a sack for eight yards … Rennel Marshall had seven stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery … Tre’von Lightfoot picked off two passes to go along with another pass broken up and six tackles … Andrew Long returned a fumble 46 yards for a touchdown.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
Emory & Henry is idle next week due to its schedule bye.  The Wasps return to action on Saturday, September 19, when they host Maryville College (Tenn.) in a 6:00 p.m. matchup. E&H leads the all-time series, 42-22-2.

GUILFORD won the 19th annual Gate City Soup Bowl, 77-13, at Greensboro College Saturday night. The Quakers' 77 points mark their third-highest total in school history and most since 1932. Guilford rolled up 619 total offensive yards, which ranks fifth in school history.  Receiver Adam Smith was named Guilford's Most Valuable Player of the game after catching eight passes for 158 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. Smith, like the rest of Guilford's starting skill players, played just the first half. He moved past Chris McKinney '02 into sixth place among Guilford's career catches leaders (166) and now stands second with 31 career touchdown receptions. Smith also climbed into third place among Guilford's career scorers with 195 career points.  Robert Smith returned to the Quakers' lineup for the first time since 2013 and made a team-high six tackles, one for loss.  Senior Tyler Hunt set the school record with 11 point-after attempts in the game and also became the Quakers' career leader in the category (119). He had a successful 48-yard field goal negated by a penalty late in the second quarter. It would've been his longest career kick and second-longest in school history.

NEXT WEEK: at Methodist (1-0, 0-0 USA South) - 1:00 p.m.
Guilford and Methodist will be meeting for the 27th time on Saturday evening, with the Quakers owning a 15-11 advantage in the all-time series.  Last season, the Quakers ended the Monarch's five-game series winning streak with a 52-20 win on the road.  Matt Pawlowski threw for 418 yards and six touchdowns in the win, with Adam Smith hauling in five passes for 140 yards and three scores.  Josh Schow ran for 133 yards and another touchdown.  The Quaker defense intercepted Monarch quarterback Max Reber three times on the way to helping Guilford to a 39:18-to-20:42 advantage in time of possession.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY fell 35-3 in its season opener, hosting the tenth-ranked Wabash Little Giants in the second edition of the Gentlemen's Classic. The Tigers scored on their first drive, but the playmaking defense of Wabash – ranked third nationally in 2014 – held the host team scoreless after the opening field goal. Offensively, the Tigers were held to 84 yards, 89 passing and -5 rushing. Junior Edgar Moore was 12-of-29 for 73 yards and two inceptions in his debut. Cam Johnson led the team with three catches for 30 yards. Michael Mey and Austin Perryman each had two grabs for a combined 30 yards. Freshman Kyree Koonce had a team-high 21 rushing yards on seven carries.  Defensively, the Tigers allowed 406 yards of offense with 252 coming on the ground and 154 through the air. The defense did help the Tigers win the turnover battle, picking off four passes, including two from senior cornerback Sidney Henry. Seniors Tyler Martin and Nick Martin also recorded one interception each. Senior safety Larry Haskins led all players with 16 tackles, while Henry and Tyler Martin each had 10. In addition to his 10 tackles and two picks, Henry also broke up three more passes. Nick Martin and Jay Brooks added nine and eight tackles, respectively.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Christopher Newport (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) - 7:00 p.m.
The Tigers will hit the road to face the Captains of Christopher Newport University on Saturday evening. The Tigers lead the young series 2-1 with each team protecting its home field. The Tigers’ two wins have come 42-20 (2012) and 35-30 (2014) at Everett Stadium, while the Captains have won the only meeting at POMOCO Stadium, taking a 17-7 decision as the Tigers were hampered by eight turnovers.

RANDOLPH-MACON opened the 2015 campaign with a 52-17 setback to Johns Hopkins.  Freshman Joseph Vairo was 19-of-35 for 215 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut.  Freshman Eric Hoy had eight catches for 91 yards and a score.  R-MC scored on its first two possessions -- a field goal following a 14-play 70-yards drive and a touchdown after a five-play 75-yard sprint.  R-MC had three scoring drives of 70 or more yards.  Junior Marcus Mitchell led the R-MC defense with 10 tackles.

NEXT WEEK: at Averett (0-1, 0-0 USA South) - 6:00 p.m.

Randolph-Macon and Averett will be meeting for the fifth time on Saturday evening with the Yellow Jackets posting a perfect record in the four previous outings.  Last season, quarterback Zac Naccarato threw for two scores and ran for two others as R-MC posted a 48-16 triumph at Day Field.  John Burn churned out a tough 56 yards on 19 carries, but was rewarded with a pair of touchdown runs.  Dom Kaopua also scored via the ground.  Eric Long and Kevin Varela eached picked off passes to lead the Yellow Jackets' defense.

SHENANDOAH won its season opener for the first time since 2011 with a 51-6 rout of Gallaudet on Saturday evening. SU recorded the first 31 points of the game -- all in the first half -- and did so with each part of the team.  Cedrick Delaney opened the game with the first of two SU rushing scores, while Weldon Gilchrist, Jr., stalled Gallaudet's drive at the SU 20-yard line with an 80-yard pick-six. Mile Green and Leonard Scott caught TD passes from Hayden Bauserman, and Jacob Newton closed the half with a 30-yard field goal.  Kye Hopkins, Dalaun Richardson and Garrett Rohrbaugh added second half touchdowns.  Defensively, Michael Messick led with 13 tackles, half a sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss.  Javonte Rose added a sack, while Josh White picked up where he left off in 2014 with his first interception of the season.

NEXT WEEK: at Ferrum (0-1, 0-0 USA South) - 1:00 p.m.

Shenandoah heads to Ferrum College next Saturday as the Hornets meet the Panthers for the 19th time.  Ferrum leads the all-time series, 14-4.  While classified as a home game for Ferrum, this contest will take place at Franklin County High School.  Shenandoah jumped all over its former league-mates (USA South) in their 2014 matchup with a 45-20 victory at Shentel Stadium.  Cedrick Delaney (130) and Drew Ferguson (112) each ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown, while Deshon Brown caught two scores from Ferguson.  Josh White intercepted a pair of passes, while Michael Messick made 10 stops.

WASHINGTON AND LEE set four school records in a 63-35 win over Averett on Friday evening.  The Generals tallied 712 yards of total offense, breaking the previous school record of 652 that was set against Richmond in 1950.  The Blue & White also gained 649 yards on the ground, breaking the previous W&L record of 525 yards set against Shepherd in 1953.  It also eclipsed the ODAC record of 503 yards set by W&L in 2012.  Additionally, the Generals tied school marks for rushing touchdowns in a game (9) and PATs in a game (9).  All told, the two teams combined for 1,323 yards and the 63 points scored by W&L were the most since amassing 63 in a 63-0 win over Guilford in 2011.  W&L had seven players rush for more than 50 yards in the game, with seven different players helping to rush for the nine touchdowns on the evening.  Defensively, John Carrick led the unit with nine tackles, while Grey Reames came off the bench to make six stops with one of two Generals' interceptions. Michael Shields had the other pick.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Sewanee (1-0, 0-0 SAA) - 1:00 p.m.
Washington and Lee and Sewanee will be meeting for the 64th time on Saturday, with the Generals owning a 40-23 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1892 season.  W&L had won nine straight meetings before suffering a narrow 21-19 loss last season in Sewanee, Tenn.  In that contest, the Generals' rushing offense was kept in check, to the tone of 187 yards, but that didn't keep W&L from being in it until the end. Duncan Maxwell scored via a 15-yard pass from Charlie Nelson with 35-seconds to play, but the Generals did not convert the ensuing two-point attempt, leading to the final score.
