READ THE ODAC FOOTBALL REPORT: WEEK 1
The 2017 season opened with ODAC teams picking up five wins in a full slate of non-conference action. Bridgewater, Guilford, Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon, and Shenandoah all earned wins in week one, while Washington and Lee forced overtime in nearly adding a sixth win. Emory & Henry's setback was by just five points in the lowest scoring affair of the weekend.
THE GAMES
BRIDGEWATER 27, GETTYSBURG 24 -- Box Score
Bridgewater opened is season with a 27-24 last-minute victory behind a 65-yard catch-and-run from Brendon Maturey to Corey Jochim with 0:50 to play.
FERRUM 13, EMORY & HENRY 8 -- Box Score
In the lowest-scoring contest of the weekend, future ODAC member Ferrum got the best of Emory & Henry, 13-8, in the latest edition of the Crooked Road Classic.
GUILFORD 38, HUNTINGDON 24 -- Box Score
Guilford's big play offense was on full display as the Quakers snapped a six-game skid dating back to last season with a 38-24 win at Huntingdon, marking the program's first football victory in Alabama.
HAMDPEN-SYDNEY 20, AVERETT 17 -- Box Score
Hamdpen-Sydney recovered from a pair of small deficits to post a 20-17 win at home thanks in part to an Alec Cobb to Major Morgan touchdown pass at the outset of the fourth quarter.
RANDOLPH-MACON 41, DICKINSON 6 -- Box Score
Randolph-Macon opened its 2016 title defense with a 41-6 thumping of Dickinson College in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets registerd four rushing touchdowns en route to the win.
SHENANDOAH 40, GALLAUDET 14 -- Box Score
Shenandoah left no doubt in its 40-14 drubbing of Gallaudet University behind a big passing day and a defense that also put points on the board..
JOHNS HOPKINS 32, WASHINGTON AND LEE 29 (OT) -- Box Score
Washington and Lee nearly pulled off an upset of nationally 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Friday evening before falling to the Blue Jays, 32-29, in overtime.
ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSE: Guilford College quarterback Karsten Miller, a senior from Thomasville, N.C., helped the Quakers snap a six-game skid dating back to last season with a 38-24 win on the road at Huntingdon College. The win also marked GC's first football victory in the state of Alabama. Miller completed passes to eight different receivers on the way to going 16-of-36 thru the air for 353 yards and four touchdown passes with no interceptions. He also carried the ball eight times for 23 yards, using two scrambles to sustain drives on third-down plays. Two of Miller's touchdown passes came in the fourth quarter, including a 97-yard scoring play with first-year receiver Montek Johnson. Miller eluded the rush in the end zone and throwing against his body, found Johnson 47-yards downfield to lead to the longest play from scrimmage in the young ODAC season. Saturday's effort helped Miller move into a share for eighth place on Guilford's career passing list.
DEFENSE: Shenandoah University linebacker Bernie Hayes III, a sophomore from Fort Washington, Md., helped the Hornets opened the new season with a resounding 40-14 triumph over Gallaudet University. Hayes tied for team-high honors with eight total tackles. He was in the Bison backfield all day, registering 4.0 tackles for a loss to tie for the most in the ODAC in week one. Those plays cost the Bison 19 yards of offense. Hayes also broke up two passes before getting in on the scoring. Late in the first quarter, Hayes gave Shenandoah a lead it would not relinquish as he picked up a fumble off a bad GU toss and sprinted 36 yards untouched for a touchdown. The score put SU ahead 13-6 with 2:32 to go in the opening frame.
