READ THE ODAC FOOTBALL REPORT: WEEK 2
ODAC teams are now 11-3 after two weeks of non-conference play to start the 2017 season, including a 6-1 showing this past Saturday. Bridgewater College, Guilford College, Randolph-Macon College, and Shenandoah University all moved to 2-0, while Emory & Henry College and Washington and Lee University posted wins to even their records at 1-1. Hampden-Sydney College fell in its second outing to see its record stand at 1-1.
THE GAMES
BRIDGEWATER 25, THOMAS MORE 23 -- Box Score
Bridgewater moved to 2-0 with its second straight tight result, this time going on the roard to upset nationally 18th-ranked Thomas More College thanks in part to a ball-controll offense that held possession for more than 33 minutes of the contest.
EMORY & HENRY 48, BREVARD 13 -- Box Score
Emory & Henry leveled its season record at 1-1 with six offensive touchdowns in a 48-13 victory at Brevard, which is reclassifying to NCAA Division III from Division II to be a member of the USA South.
GUILFORD 56, METHODIST 17 -- Box Score
Guilford's offense was running on all cylinders in its 56-17 win at Methodist, with running back De'Eric Bell setting an ODAC single-game record with 428 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.
CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT 20, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 7 -- Box Score
Hampden-Sydney was held scoreless until the final minute of play a the Tigers dropped a road contest at Christopher Newport, 20-7.
RANDOLPH-MACON 17, AVERETT 13 -- Box Score
Randolph-Macon held possession for more than 38 minutes but found itself in a slugfest at Averett, pulling out a 17-13 win to move to 2-0 on the young season.
SHENANDOAH 61, N.C. WESLEYAN 14 -- Box Score
Shenandoah posted its second big win with a 61-14 triumph at N.C. Wesleyan to move to 2-0. SU has out-scored its first two opponents, 101-28.
WASHINGTON AND LEE 63, SEWANEE 30 -- Box Score
Washington and Lee ran all over Sewanee in move to 1-1 with a 63-30 home win. The Generals rushed for nine touchdowns, tying the ODAC single-game record, and posted 554 yards on the ground, the third-most in league history.
ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSE: Guilford running back De'Eric Bell, a junior from Jackson, Ga., put together a record-setting day in the Quakers' 56-17 win at Methodist. Bell set ODAC and Guilford single-game records with 428 all-purpose yards. He registered a ODAC, Guilford, and NCAA Division III-record 11 punt returns, which he turned into 138 yards. He added 137 yards on three kickoff returns, powered by a 97-yard return for a touchdown midway thru the fourth quarter. Bell was a little more conventional with his remaining 153 all-purpose yards. He carried the ball 16 times for 78 yards and pair of touchdowns. He added four receptions for 75 yards to complete his afternoon. All told, Bell averaged 12.5 yards over his 34 touches. Thru two weeks, he leads the ODAC with 640 all-purpose yards.
DEFENSE: Shenandoah safey Nate Hill, a sophomore from Gaithersburg, Md., was a turnover machine from his safety position in the Hornets' 61-14 triumph at N.C. Wesleyan. Hill accounted for three of Shenandoah's six forced turnovers. He intercepted a pair of passes and racked up 55 total return yards. He returned his second pick 37 yards to the Battling Bishops' 39-yard line, setting up a SU scoring pass four plays later. Hill's first forced miscue came in the opening quarter when he jarred the ball loose from NCWC running back Deandre Gillis, who one play prior had scampered 32 yards to the SU 33-yard line. Hill tacked on two tackles and broke up three other passes to give him a team- and game-best five passes defensed. His efforts helped SU hold NCWC to 3-of-13 on third down conversions.
