READ THE ODAC FOOTBALL REPORT: WEEK 5
Week one of conference play let all supporters know that the ODAC is up for grabs this season, and offense just might lead the way to a title. League teams combined to score 261 points overall. Shenandoah eclipsed 50 points and Emory & Henry topped 40 markers in opening their ODAC slates with victories. Hampden-Sydney came just shy of the 40-point mark in its league win.
THE GAMES
EMORY & HENRY 45, WASHINGTON AND LEE 42 -- Box Score
Emory & Henry led for much of the game until Washington and Lee went ahead by four points with less than seven minutes to play, but a Brady Justice 1-yard plunge with 11-seconds to play put the Wasps on top for good in a 45-42 conference-opening victory.
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 37, BRIDGEWATER 27 -- Box Score
Hampden-Sydney took down the last of the ODAC's unbeaten squads in a tight matchup with Bridgewater on Saturday, defeating the Eagles 37-27 in Hampden-Sydney.
SHENANDOAH 51, RANDOLPH-MACON 38 -- Box Score
Shenandoah and Randolph-Macon combined for 89 points and 1,168 yards of total offense in Ashland on Thursday evening, but it was four R-MC turnovers and SU's quick-strike offense behind a stellar passing game that proved the difference in the Hornets' first win over the Yellow Jackets since joining the ODAC in 2012-13.
JACKSONVILLE 56, GUILFORD 21 -- Box Score
The Quakers completed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a second straight outing against a non-Division III opponent, falling at Jacksonville University, 56-21.
ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSE: Shenandoah quarterback Hayden Bauserman, a junior from Woodstock, Va., put together one of the best passing days in NCAA Division III this season in leading Shenandoah to a 51-38 road win at Randolph-Macon. Bauserman went 32-of-60 thru the air for 559 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. The 559 yards are the fourth-most in ODAC history, rank second in Division III this year, and set a new SU record. His six touchdown passes are the most throw in the ODAC since 2014 (GC's Matt Pawlowski), the second most in Division III this year, and established a second school standard. Bauserman, who had 357 yards and four touchdowns thru the air by halftime, completed passes to eight different receivers with three scoring strikes going to Leonard Scott (7 for 162 yds). For the season, Bauserman leads the ODAC in several passing categories including yards (1,589), yards per game (397.3), touchdowns (19) and efficiency rating (150.1). His 397.3 yards per game top the Division III charts.
DEFENSE: Emory & Henry defensive back Justin Banks, a junior from Coeburn, Va., made an impact early and often in Emory & Henry's 45-42 victory over Washington and Lee to open ODAC play. On just the third play of the game, Banks put points on the board with the first turnover of the game. He stripped a W&L runner at the Generals' 27-yard line and returned it to paydirt for an early 7-0 lead. Banks notched a game-high 14 tackles on the day, including nine solo stops. He also came away with a tackle for a loss, costing W&L two yards of offense. For the season, Banks is sixth in the ODAC with 33 tackles and tied for second with 24 solo tackles.
