AUSTIN, Texas --- Three ODAC football standouts took home impressive dual-emphasis honors on Wednesday afternoon as Shenandoah University center Caleb Hutson and Washington and Lee University linebacker Max Garrett and defensive back Grey Reames were named Academic All-Americans by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Garrett earned a spot on the first team, while Hutson and Reames were tabbed to the second team.

This is the first year since 1978 that Washington and Lee has seen two players earn Academic All-America recognition. Garrett and Reames are the first W&L Academic All-Americans since Brett Murray in 2012. Hutson is the third SU player in program history and the second Hornet of the season to earn such distinction, joining Alex Wessel from the women's soccer team.

To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, student-athletes must have at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be a starter or important reserve on their team. Nominees are voted on in one of eight national districts by CoSIDA members with first team All-District honorees moving on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

Garrett, a senior from Fairfield, Conn., doubled as the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete as well as the Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year. An accounting and business administration double major, Garrett is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, having picked up three appointments to the All-ODAC Academic Team and the Washington and Lee Dean's List.

Garrett is a three-time All-ODAC First Team selection, picking up those honors over the past three seasons. He matched his 2016 total in leading the ODAC with 109 total tackles. He upped his ante on solo stops by two with a league-best 61 stops. He made a pair of tackles for a loss and picked off two passes. He registered six games of 10 or more tackles, including a season and career-high 18 stops in the ODAC title-clinching victory at Shenandoah. Garrett will graduate having registered 376 total tackles including 204 solo stops, 8.5 tackles for a loss, four interceptions, and eight passes broken up.

Reames, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., is a business administration and computer science double-major started all 11 games at cornerback this fall, finishing in a tie for third in the league with four interceptions.  He was also fourth on the team in tackles (49) and he added five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Reames completed his career with 148 tackles, 20 pass breakups and nine interceptions, including two he returned for touchdowns.  He finished second all-time at W&L with 246 career interception return yards.

Hutson, a junior from Fairfax, Va., maintains a 3.87 grade point average as a sport management major. He has earned Dean's List honors four times, President's List twice and to the Academic All-ODAC squad in both 2015-16 and 2016-17. With Hutson anchoring the offensive line from his center position, Shenandoah led the nation this season with 3925 passing yards and 41 passing touchdowns. SU quarterbacks were sacked just 14 times despite attempting 535 passes.
