ODAC Football Report | Week 8

FOREST, Va. --- Six of the ODAC's teams were active in week eight of the football season. Washington and Lee maintains its position at the top of the league standings by winning for the sixth straight time and improving to 4-0 in league play with a shutout of Bridgewater. Randolph-Macon posted its fourth consecutive via a non-conference triumph over Apprentice School. R-MC is joined at 3-1 in ODAC play by Hampden-Sydney, which won a shootout with Ferrum to snap a two-game skid. Shenandoah made a field goal as time expired to a complete a comeback in a low-scoring victory over Emory & Henry in non-conference action. Guilford was idle on its scheduled bye date.

This week's ODAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week are Hampden-Sydney running back Kaleb Smith and Shenandoah linebacker Ben Burgan.

THE GAMES | WEEK 8

WASHINGTON AND LEE def. BRIDGEWATER, 17-0 | Box Score
Washington and Lee limited Bridgewater to just 118 yards of offense on the way to a 17-0 shutout of the Eagles on Saturday in Lexington. The Generals ran 80 offensive plays compared to 42 by Bridgewater, leading W&L to a 41:35-to-18:25 advantage in possession time. The Generals have now won six straight games and remain one game ahead of Randolph-Macon in the ODAC league-play standings. They now have two shutout victories, marking their first season with multiple shutouts since registering three in 2004. Running back Josh Breece led W&L's rushing attack (298 yards) with 117 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. That output marks his program-best 19th game of 100 or more rushing yards. Coby Kirkland (56), Stephen Murrin (54) and Alex Wertz (40) combined for 150 yards on the ground. Dean Johnson led W&L's defense with five stops. Robert Harvey and Nathan Unger posted quarterback sacks. Owen Roberts intercepted a pass. Receiver Viante Tucker led Bridgewater's offense with 43 yards on five catches. Ronald Robinson, Jr., ran for 35 yards on nine carries. Defensively, linebacker Brett Tharp recorded a career-best 23 tackles and forced a fumble. Nazeer Jordan made nine stops and also jarred a ball loose. Aaron Moore intercepted a pass and broke up two others. Justin Holley also picked off a W&L throw.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY def. FERRUM, 42-28 | Box Score
Hampden-Sydney and Ferrum combined for 70 points and 1,004 yards of offense with the Tigers outlasting the Panthers, 42-28, in Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. H-SC running back Kaleb Smith collected 165 all-purpose yards with 138 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. That featured a 52-yard touchdown run to seal the Tigers' victory with 1:14 to play. Quarterback Tanner Bernard threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Braeden Bowling caught only two passes, but both went for scores of 54 and 79 yards. Josh Jones posted 46-yard TD catch, giving H-SC's offense four big play touchdowns covering 46 or more yards. Defensively, Will Pickren led with 15 tackles and a TFL. Brendan Weinberg made 14 stops with 2.5 for a loss and a sack. Tobias Lafayette intercepted a pair of passes to give him four interceptions in the last two games and an ODAC-best five for the season. For Ferrum, quarterback Titus Jones shook off two interceptions with 333 yards and two touchowns passing along with 51 yards and two touchdowns rushing. Joshua Ellerbe ran for 106 yards on 24 carries. Daniel Lamb and Conner Sides caught the TD passes from Jones, while Tmahdae Penn hauled in seven passes for 90 yards. Defensively, Tanner Kennedy led with seven tackles. Ray Alexander posted a quarterback sack. Ja'Kari Williams intercepted a pass and broke up another.

RANDOLPH-MACON def. APPRENTICE, 49-7 | Box Score
Randolph-Macon scored early and often as the Yellow Jackets posted a 49-7 victory over Apprentice School for their fourth straight win. R-MC ran for 300 yards with four different ball carriers finding the end zone. Justin DeLeon added to his ODAC leading rushing stats (826 yards, 12 TDs) with 97 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Kwesi Clarke ran for 89 yards and two scores with one covering 57 yards. Aaron Acevedo churned out 76 yards including a 55-yard touchdown run. Presley Egbers added 23 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Brecht Heuchan threw for 140 yards featuring a 22-yard TD pass to David Wallis. Wallis and Joey Hunt combined for seven catches and 88 yards. Defensively, Tyler DeBerry and Matt Vergara led with five tackles each. Nine players were in on stops behind the line with DeBerry earning a team-best 2.0 TFLs. Erik Harris notched R-MC's lone sack. Stephen Richardson intercepted two passes to give him four on the season.

SHENANDOAH def. EMORY & HENRY, 9-7 | Box Score
Patrick Ritchie booted a career-long 40-yard field goal as time expired to complete Shenandoah's comeback for a 9-7 victory over former ODAC foe Emory & Henry on Saturday in Winchester. The seven points are the fewest allowed by the Hornets since posting a 28-7 victory over Guilford in 2019. SU's offense shook off four interceptions to see Rashadeen Byrd, Jr., pull the Hornets to within one point (missed PAT) with a one-yard TD run late in the third quarter. He finished with 43 yards rushing with Gary Garlic adding 42 yards on the ground. Brant Butler caught six passes for 67 yards. He leads the ODAC in receptions (42), receiving yards (701), and receiving yards per game (100.1). Linebacker Ben Burgan led the defense with 16 tackles including four for a loss. Three of those TFLs came in the fourth quarter including one on a fourth-down play deep in SU territory. David Agyei made 10 stops. Ahoyon Boothe foced a fumble and intercepted a pass, while Nigel Duberry recovered a fumble he forced. Boothe and Duberry posted nine and eight tackles, respectively. 

GUILFORD | Idle
Guilford was idle during week eight on its scheduled bye. The Quakers return to action on Saturday, October 30, with a 2:00 p.m. ET kickoff at Ferrum College.

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ben Burgan | Shenandoah | Sr. | Linebacker
Burgan, a senior from Boonsboro, Md., led a Shenandoah defensive unit that limited Emory & Henry to just seven points in the Hornets 9-7 last-second victory over the Wasps. The seven points are the fewest SU has allowed to an opponent since defeating Guilford, 26-7, on September 28, 2019. Burgan posted a game-best 16 tackles with seven solo stops and 4.0 coming behind the line of scrimmage. He cost E&H 12 yards of offense on those plays. Three of those tackles for a loss came in the fourth quarter as Shenandoah was mounting its comeback. That included a fourth-down stop for a loss of four yards with Emory & Henry deep in SU territory. Burgan currently leads the ODAC in tackles (89), tackles per game (12.7), and solo stops (51). He is tied atop the ODAC lists at 10.5 TFLs with teammate Mason Caldwell and Hampden-Sydney's Brendan Weinberg. Burgan has registered 11 or more tackles in six of seven games played this season.

FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kaleb Smith | Hampden-Sydney | Sr. | Running Back
Smith a senior from Rocky Mount, Va., led the Hampden-Sydney offense with 165 all-purpose yards and three downs in the Tigers 42-28 victory at home against Ferrum. Smith, who ran for 138 yards on 21 carries and added 27 yards on four receptions, opened the game's scoring with a one-yard TD run early in the first quarter. He added a six-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to give H-SC a 28-21 halftime advantage. Smith put the game out of reach with 1:14 to play as he capped the game's scoring with a 52-yard touchdown run, his longest rush of the season. Smith is currently fourth in the ODAC in rushing yards (434) and yards per game (72.3). He has scored six rushing touchdowns. Saturday's effort marked his second game with 100 or more rushing yards this season. The 165 all-purpose yards are the most he registered this year and his fourth game with at least 123 all-purpose yards.
