ODAC Football Report | Week 6

ODAC Football Report | Week 6

FOREST, Va. --- Two teams remain unbeaten overall with three squads standing atop the ODAC standings at 2-0 following week six of the Division III football season. Both Bridgewater College and Randolph-Macon College stand a perfect 5-0 with wins in their first two conference games. Washington and Lee University stands with them with a second win against a league foe in as many tries, and Hampden-Sydney College returned to the win column to even out its ODAC win-loss record at 1-1.

Bridgewater needed late heroics that featured all three phases of the game to stand as the lone home team to win in week six with a 23-17 come-from-behind triumph over Shenandoah University. Randolph-Macon traveled to Averett University and scored 28 points early to help itself to 55-7 win over the Cougars. Washington and Lee did all of its damage on the ground in posting a 31-6 road win at Guilford College. Hampden-Sydney scored the opening 20 points in a 35-16 win at Ferrum College.

This week's ODAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week are Hampden-Sydney quarterback Tanner Bernard and Bridgewater defensive back Shawn Harris.

ODAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | WEEK 6

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shawn Harris | Bridgewater | Sr. | Defensive Back
Harris, a senior from Washington, D.C., put together a career day in helping Bridgewater to a 23-17 come-from-behind victory over Shenandoah to remain unbeaten at 5-0 on the season. Harris made a game-high and career-best 16 tackles including 10 solo stops. That is the fourth-most tackles in Bridgewater history. Included in that effort were 4.0 tackles for loss with a quarterback sack. The 4.0 TFLs are the second-most in the Eagles' record book. Harris forced a fumble that was ultimately recovered by the Shenandoah offense, but arguably his biggest contribution did result in a takeaway. With SU leading 17-9 early in the fourth quarter, Harris stepped in front of a quick out pass towards the numbers on the far sideline and intercepted a pass at the SU 34-yard line. He returned it down to the two-yard line, setting up a touchdown run by Albert Mensah on the next play. Bridgewater would go on to register one additional turnover to setup the game-winning score. For the season, Harris has made 35 tackles including 25 solo efforts. The sack and interception were his first of the season.

Bernard, a two-time All-ODAC selection, shook off two miscues to complete 75-percent of his passes at 33-of-44 for a career-best 440 yards and four touchdown passes. While he connected with seven different receivers against the Panthers, Bernard's connect with Mason Cunningham was prolific. The pair linked up 13 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns. That included the game's second score via a crossing route over the middle from 18 yards away for a 14-0 lead. They made it 20-0 early in the second quarter with a comeback quick hitch that turned into a 36-yard catch-and-run. Their final scoring connection came midway through the third quarter and covered 42 yards with Bernard finding Cunningham down the seam. Bernard's remaining TD throw was the first score of the game as he hit Jamahdia Whitby along the left sideline for a 72-yard catch-and-sprint to paydirt. Bernard completed five of his first six passes, two of which went for scores. At one point, he completed eight straight passes to six different receivers including a converted two-point attempt.
