ODAC Football Report | Week 8

FOREST, Va. --- And then there was one. Randolph-Macon College stands atop the ODAC standings as the lone remaining undefeated team in the league following action in week eight. Bridgewater College and Hampden-Sydney College stayed within a game of R-MC with wins on Saturday to join Washington and Lee University at 3-1 in conference play. Ferrum College collected its first win of the season.

Randolph-Macon moved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in league play with a 35-21 win at Shenandoah University. Bridgewater posted two fourth-quarter touchdowns to help the Eagles outlast Averett University, 23-16. Hampden-Sydney won both the most dynamic and highest-scoring affair of the weekend with a 44-43 overtime triumph at Washington and Lee. Ferrum earned its first victory with a big rushing day in a 31-17 win at Guilford College.

This week's ODAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week are Hampden-Sydney quarterback Tanner Bernard and Tigers' safety Will Pickren.

THE GAMES | WEEK 8
  • BRIDGEWATER DEF AVERETT, 23-16 | BOX SCORE
    Averett led 9-7 following a safety for much of the third quarter, but a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns for Bridgewater were enough for the Eagles to withstand one final score for the Cougars on the way to a 23-16 home victory at Jopson Field. Alberty Mensah scored the second of his two rushing touchdowns in the final frame on the way to leading BC's rushing attack with 64 yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Malcolm Anderson ran for 48 yards and threw a 48-yard TD pass to Viante Tucker as the eventual difference-maker on the scoreboard. Amari Presley led the Eagles' defense with eight tackles and an interception. Aaron nice made two of his four stops behind the line of scrimmage including a sack. Tucker Harris also notched a sack. For Averett, Bryce Phipps ran for a game-high 114 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Ryan Curle threw for 156 yards and and a touchdown to Shawn Watlington. He finished with three catches for 51 yards. Tevarius Brooks ran in the remaining AU touchdown. Defensively, JaVon Lofton led the unit with 10 tackles. Cody Britt registered the Cougars lone sack, which occurred in the BC end zone for a safety.
     
  • FERRUM DEF. GUILFORD, 31-17 | BOX SCORE
    Ferrum scored the first 17 points of the contest, but Guilford responded with 17 unanswered points of their own to tie the game with 3:31 left in the third quarter. The visiting Panthers found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter via two touchdown runs from quarterback Josh Luckett to post a 31-17 win in Greensboro. Zac Smiley ran for a game-best 123 yards on 17 carries, while Joshua Ellerbe ran 11 times for 72 yards and a score in helping FC to a 288-yard effort on the ground. Monzelle Campbell ran for 32 yards and a touchdown. Deven Gray caught four passes for 61 yards. Defensively, Rah'Quan Payne led FC with five tackles. Cole Epperley, Avion Smith, and Hunter Cannaday intercepted passes, while Antoine Covington forced a fumble that Terrance Scales recovered. For Guilford, quarterback Bailey Baker threw a pair of touchdown passes to Kyle Lovett and Brodey King. Tre Alexander posted game-highs of eight catches and 158 receiving yards. Baker led GC's ground game with 68 yards on 10 carries, while Caleb Gibson ran 11 times for 47 yards. Defensively, Adam Lacy, Trey Buie, and Nick Iannone posted nine stops each. Iannone made 2.0 TFLs including a quarterback sack. Logan Dodson intercepted a pass.
     
  • RANDOLPH-MACON DEF. SHENANDOAH, 35-21 | BOX SCORE
    Randolph-Macon and Shenandoah both featured strong passing attacks, but it was the Yellow Jackets ground game that accounted for 242 yards and led to a 37:58 time of possession advantage in a 35-21 road victory. R-MC, ranked 16th by the AFCA and 17th by D3football.com, is now 7-0 atop the ODAC standings. Quarterback Drew Campanale went 19-for-26 for 297 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown. David Wallis caught seven passes for career-highs of 162 and three TDs covering 32, 55, and 11 yards, sequentially. Joey Hunt finished with five catches for 58 yards and a score. Kwesi Clarke led the rushing attach with 132 on 23 carries. Nick Hale ran for 93 yards and 18 rushes. Defensively, Torryn Carey-Jarrell led with eight stops. Owen Arruza and Daniel Eliasek combined on a tackle for loss. For Shenandoah, quarterback Steven Hugney registered 328 yards and two scores through the air and added another TD on the ground. Rashadeen Byrd, Jr., ran for 52 yards on 11 carries. Andre Jackson and Ethan Bigbee both pulled in touchdown receptions. Jackson (6 for 98), Bigbee (6 for 85) and Bryar Wheeler (5 for 80) each finished with 80 or more yards receiving. Defensively, Quante Redd posted a game-high 15 tackles with a forced fumble. Keyshawn Wilder and Ben Burgan made 11 stops each. David Agyei intercepted a pass.
     
  • HAMPDEN-SYDNEY DEF. WASHINGTON AND LEE, 44-43 (OT) | BOX SCORE
    Kicker Elijah Swett nailed a 42-yard field goal for Hampden-Sydney as time expired to force overtime at Washington and Lee. His extra point on the Tigers' first possession would prove the difference in a 44-43 away victory over the Generals. Quarterback Tanner Bernard scored the winning touchown via a 3-yard run. He ran for 32 yards addition to throwing for 313 yards and three touchdowns on 31-of-45 through the air. Austin Fernandez caught nine passes for 86 yards and a score. David Byler finished with five catches for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Melik Frost ran for 87 yards on 23 carries. Defensively, Will Pickren posted 22 total tackles, the most in the ODAC this season and third-most in Division III. His brother Max Pickren made seven stops and recovered a fumble that he returned 15 yards for a touchdown. Tramell Thompson forced that fumble, while Jaylan Long jarred another ball loose that W&L quarterback Eli Hildebrandt picked up and took in for a touchdown. James Townsend intercepted a pass for H-SC. Stephen Murrin led W&L's offense with 137 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Alex Wertz ran for 91 yards and a pair of scores on 20 rushes. Jacob Romero added 67 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Cameron Reed also scored a rushing TD. Defensively, Davin Onyejekwe led with 11 tackles. Hunter Hawk forced a recovered a fumble with Will Mahmud forcing another loose ball that H-SC recovered. Robert Poindexter notched a quarterback sack.

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Will Pickren | Hampden-Sydney | Jr. | Safety
Pickren, a junior from Mount Pleasant, S.C., picks up his second ODAC defensive weekly award in as many weeks after helping Hampden-Sydney to a 44-43 victory at Washington and Lee in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Pickren was all over the field against the Generals with a game and career-high 22 tackles including seven solo stops to go with a quarterback hurry. The 22 tackles is not only the most for any player in the ODAC this season, but it ranks as the third-most in a single-game in NCAA Division III this season. Pickren has recorded 10 or more tackles in five straight games with Saturday's outing marking his 11th career double-figure day. He currently leads the ODAC in overall (85) and assisted (55) tackles as well as tackles per game (12.1). He has intercepted a pair of passes on the year.
FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Bernard, a senior from Lynchburg, Va., continued the best stretch of play of his collegiate career with his second ODAC offensive weekly award of the season in leading Hampden-Sydney to a 44-43 overtime victory at Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon. Bernard was responsible for four touchdowns on the day, but it was his final one that proved the difference. Combined with kicker Elijah Swett's extra point, Bernard's three-yard touchdown run to cap the Tigers' first and only overtime possession provided the winning margin. Bernard, who ran for 32 yards on 10 carries overall, threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns without an interception on 31-of-45 passing. He has thrown for more than 300 yards in all six games played this season. Each of his three TD passes either tied the score or game H-SC the lead in its back-and-forth affair with the Generals. He hit Austin Fernandez with a five-yard score to make it 7-7 early in the second quarter. He and David Byler connected for touchdowns twice. The first covered six yards for a 14-10 lead with 5:50 to go in the first half. The pair then hooked up a second six-yard scoring play for a 23-17 lead with 8:40 on the third quarter clock. For the season, Bernard leads the ODAC in most passing categories including completions (171), attempts (263), yards (2,200), yards per game (366.7), and touchdown passes (20). He is second in completion percentage (65.0%) and has thrown just three interceptions. He has also run for three touchdowns.
