2013 Men's Tennis Players of the Week

Graham Wilson, Virginia Wesleyan, FreshmanApril 22, 2013Wilson, a freshman from Newport News, Va., opened with a 6-4, 6-5 win at #1 singles over Hampden-Sydney, and then followed that 8-1 at #1 doubles with classmate Drew Tomajczyk. Wilson then helped the Marlins to a 5-2 win over Guilford in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals with a 8-6 win at #1 doubles with Tomajczyk. Wilson is now 23-6 overall in 2012-13. His victories total is a rookie record at VWC and ties the third highest overall victory total in program history. He is 17-4 at the No. 1 flight in singles, which is also a VWC rookie record for wins at the flight and ties the overall VWC record for wins at the No. 1 flight. He and Tomajczyk are riding a seven-match winning streak at #1 doubles.

Peter Hawkins, Bridgewater, SeniorApril 15, 2013Hawkins, a senior from Silver Spring, Md. led the Eagles to a 3-0 conference record with a perfect week in singles and doubles play. At No. 1 singles, Hawkins won 6-4, 6-2 vs. Shenandoah and 6-1, 6-3 vs. Va. Wesleyan. In a battle for second place in the ODAC, he rallied to defeat E&H's James Keighley 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. At doubles, he was 3-0 with partner Sam Churchill. The duo won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles vs. Shenandoah. At No. 3 vs. VMC, the duo took an 8-1 win. They also won at No. 3 against E&H, 8-4. Hawkins is 8-1 at No. 1 vs. ODAC competition. He and Churchill are undefeated in doubles play at No. 3.

James Lee, Roanoke, SeniorApril 08, 2013Lee, a senior from Radnor, Pa., went 5-1 last week as Roanoke went 2-1 as a team. Lee, who is 12-1 this season from the No. 2 singles position, went 3-0 from the second slot this past week as he posted victories against Kyle Gatti from Greensboro College (6-2, 6-0), Drew Tomajczyk from Virginia Wesleyan (6-0, 6-1) and Dan Phung from Randolph College (6-1, 6-0). In doubles play, Lee and teammate Matthew Kessley went 2-1 with wins coming against Greensboro and Randolph in the top flight. The duoâs only loss, the first for Lee in his last eight doubles matches, came to Virginia Wesleyan.

Hayden White, Washington and Lee, SeniorApril 01, 2013White, a senior from Baltimore, Md., helped lead the Generals to a 2-1 week by posting a 2-0 record in singles and a 3-0 mark in doubles. In a 5-0 win over Lynchburg, White and partner Brian Krouskos posted an 8-0 win at #1 doubles. In a 5-4 loss to #18 Carnegie Mellon, White picked up two points, including a 6-2, 6-1 win at #1 singles over Chris Heaney-Secord, the sixth-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region. He and Christopher Hu won 8-3 at #2 singles. In a 7-2 win over # 16 North Carolina Wesleyan, White won his 13th straight singles match, defeating Robert Kjellberg, who is the top-ranked singles player in the region. The score was 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5). White and Hu posted their second straight 8-3 win at #2 doubles. For the season, White has posted a 21-5 singles record and a 15-7 doubles mark. In the latest (3/28/13) ITA rankings, White is the second-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region.

Hayden White, Washington and Lee, SeniorMarch 25, 2013White, a senior from Baltimore, Md., helped the Generals to a 3-0 week by going 5-0 between singles and doubles play. He earned wins at #1 singles (6-4, 6-4) and #2 doubles (8-1) in a 5-1 win over Bridgewater. He won 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles in his only action of an 8-1 win over Shenandoah. White capped his week with victories at #1 singles (6-2, 6-0) and #1 doubles (8-0) in the Generals 9-0 win over Hampden-Sydney. For the season, White has posted a 19-5 singles mark and 12-7 record in doubles play.

Hayden White, Washington and Lee, SeniorMarch 18, 2013White, a senior from Baltimore, Md., helped lead the Generals to a 3-1 week by posting a 3-0 singles record and a 3-1 doubles mark. He opened the week with an 8-0 with Christopher HU at #2 doubles against Randolph-Macon. He followed that with 6-1, 6-0 triumph at #1 singles and an 8-0 win at #2 against Randolph. White added a 6-4, 6-4 win at #1 singles in the 23rd-ranked Generals 6-3 loss to 24th-ranked Mary Washington. He and Hu lost their doubles match, 8-2. White and Hu rebounded with an 8-4 win against Emory & Henry, with White winning 7-5, 6-1 in singles play. White has won eight straight singles matches this spring, with the only loss occurring against the No. 1 player from NCAA Division I Elon in the spring opener. For the season, he has recorded a 16-5 singles mark and a 10-7 doubles record.

James Keighley, Emory & Henry, FreshmanMarch 11, 2013Keighley, a freshman from Heswall, Mercyside, England, put up a 7-0 week for Emory & Henry going 3-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles as the Wasps picked up four wins at Hilton Head. Keighley won two matches against top competition from Wilkes (6-0, 6-2) and Wittenberg (6-4, 6-3), while also posting a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2) win against John Carroll. He and teammate Webster Gilley recorded doubles wins of 8-2 (John Carroll), 8-2 (Regis), 8-5 (Wilkes) and 8-6 (Wittenberg). The 4-0 week improved the Wasps' record to 6-1 and moves their winning streak to five straight.

Taylor Shamshiri, Washington and Lee, SophomoreMarch 04, 2013Shamshiri, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, helped Washington and Lee to a trio of ODAC wins by going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles. In a 7-2 win over Roanoke on Thursday, he notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. In a 9-0 win over Guilford on Saturday, Shamshiri posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles and an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. For the season (fall and spring combined), he has notched a 7-9 singles record and an 11-4 doubles mark.

Hayden White, Washington and Lee, Sr., #1 SinglesFebruary 25, 2013White, a senior from Baltimore, Md., helped lead the W&L men's tennis team to a 2-1 week by going 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles over three matches. In an 8-1 loss to top-ranked Emory on Tuesday, he posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Eric Halpern, who is ranked 23rd nationally in singles. He also led the Generals to wins over Oglethorpe (6-3) and Sewanee (8-1). For the season, White is 11-5 in singles and 5-6 in doubles. He is ranked 12th nationally in singles and 15th regionally in doubles.

John Brvenik, Guilford, Fr., No. 6 SinglesFebruary 18, 2013Brvenik, a freshman from Storrs, Conn., clinched Guilford's 5-4 win over Va. Wesleyan by pulling out a three-set win at sixth singles. He downed the Marlins' Adam Owen Ferrari, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, for his first college win.
