2013 ODAC Swimming Championship Preview

Teams Ready for Three-Day Event in Greensboro

FOREST, Va. --- The 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Swimming Championships will take place February 8-10 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC.  This marks the second year the championship has been in Greensboro. 

Washington and Lee University captured its fifth-straight and 22nd overall conference crown in the 2012 event.  The Generals collected 992 total points, followed by Randolph-Macon with 740 and Sweet Briar with 373.  The Generals had three individuals honored, while Greensboro College and Bridgewater College collected one accolade apiece.  GC’s Emma Phillips was tabbed the ODAC Swimmer of the Year, while W&L’s Caroline Hamp was selected as the ODAC Rookie of the Year.  The Generals’ Head Coach Kami Gardner earned her third ODAC Coach of the Year award, while Delaney Rolfe garnered the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for the second straight season.  BC’s Simone Conyers received the Bonnie Kestner Sportsmanship Award.

50-YARD FREESTYLE
2012 Event Champion:
Sarah Almond, Randolph-Macon – 24.32
2013 ODAC Top Time: Izzy Brassfield, Washington and Lee – 24.84
Event Preview: The top two times this year are separated by just .2 seconds.  This year's top time owner is W&L’s Izzy Brassfield, who remains poised to finish at or near the top with her best time sitting at 24.84.  E&H’s Payton Shirey (24.86, second) is looking to pass Brassfield and touch first this weekend.  A host of new performers could easily vie for the event title, including the Generals’ Bentley Boldt, Sarah Schaffer, Meredith Hardy, Emory & Henry’s Tyler Herron, and Notre Dame of Maryland’s Faith Jones. 

100-YARD FREESTYLE

2013 ODAC Top Time: Bentley Boldt, Washington and Lee – 54.41
Event Preview: Washington and Lee holds the top five spots in this year’s 100-yard freestyle event.  Bentley Boldt (54.41) owns the top spot, while Sarah Schaffer (54.63) and Izzy Brassfield (54.68) sit in second and third, respectively.  Throw E&H’s Payton Shirey (55.69, sixth) and BC’s Carrie Crowther (55.98, seventh) into the mix and this will sprint will be an exciting one.

200-YARD FREESTYLE
2012 Event Champion: Sarah Almond, Randolph-Macon – 1:55.37
2013 ODAC Top Time: Meredith Hardy, Washington and Lee - 1:56.59
Event Preview: Washington and Lee maintains four of the top five spots in the 200-yard free.  W&L’s Meredith Hardy owns the top place, while teammates Delaney Rolfe and Sarah Schaffer (1:57 and 1:58.60, respectively) hold the second and third best times.  E&H’s Lauren Frizzell (1:59.36, fourth) could also push for the top spot in this year’s championship.

500-YARD FREESTYLE
2012 Event Champion: Delaney Rolfe, Washington and Lee – 5:12.94
2013 ODAC Top Time: Delaney Rolfe, Washington and Lee - 5:15.09
Event Preview: The top three times this year are owned by swimmers from Washington and Lee, Emory & Henry, and Randolph-Macon.  Last year’s champion in the 500-yard free also holds the top time this season.  W&L’s Delaney Rolfe (5:15.09) will be challenged by E&H’s Lauren Frizzell (5:15.74, second) and R-MC’s Rebecca Stevenson (5:20.75, third).  The Generals’ Meredith Hardy (5:21.44, fourth) and Grace Duncan (5:23.44, fifth) could also push for the top spot.  

1650-YARD FREESTYLE
2012 Event Champion: Joanie Hudak, Washington and Lee - 18:11.45
2013 ODAC Top Time: Lauren Frizzell, Emory & Henry – 18:18.80
Event Preview: Emory & Henry’s Lauren Frizzell stakes claim to the top time in the 1650-free race with a time of 18:18.80.  W&L’s Sydney Gay sits in second with a time of 18:25.45, while Randolph-Macon adds punch in the third and fourth spots in Rebecca Stevenson (18:32.03, third) and Emily Clary (18:38.12, fourth).

200-YARD IM
2012 Event Champion:

2013 ODAC Top Time: Emma Swabb, Washington and Lee – 2:13.16
Event Preview: Washington and Lee owns nine of the top 10 times this year in the 200-yard IM.  Emma Swabb holds down the top spot with a time of 2:13.16, while teammate Lauren Kasoff sits in second with a time of 2:15.43.  E&H’s Taylor Guardalabene has the third best time (2:16.22). 

400-YARD IM
2012 Event Champion: Emma Phillips, Greensboro – 4:38.10
2013 ODAC Top Time: Emma Swabb, Washington and Lee – 4:42.05
Event Preview: Four schools (W&L, E&H, R-MC, and NDMU) have a top 10 spot in the 400-yard IM this season.  The Generals’ Emma Swabb (4:42.05) and Lauren Kasoff (4:45.28) own the league’s top two times, while the Wasps’ Taylor Guardalabene sits in the third spot (4:46.26).  Be sure to keep an eye out for the Yellow Jackets’ Rebecca Stevenson (4:51.56, fourth), NDMU’s Emily Jordan (4:57.13, eighth), and E&H’s Nicole Powell (4:59.45, ninth).

100-YARD BACKSTROKE
2012 Event Champion:
Jocelyn Cassada, Washington and Lee – 58.73
2013 ODAC Top Time: Stephanie Foster, Washington and Lee – 59.50
Event Preview: Washington and Lee and Randolph-Macon occupy the top 10 slots heading into the weekend.  W&L’s Stephanie Foster (59.50) sits comfortably in the top spot.  Teammates Caroline Hamp (1:03.05, third), Izzy Brassfield (1:03.36, fourth), Lauren Kasoff (1:03.37, fifth) and Emma Swabb (1:03.41, sixth) deepen a strong field of backstroke swimmers.  The Yellow Jackets’ Rachel Leigh (1:02.91) occupies the second spot and teammates Kathleen Lampe (1:03.85, seventh) and Emily Maltby (1:04.06, eighth) will also push for the top nod.

200-YARD BACKSTROKE
2012 Event Champion: Jocelyn Cassada, Washington and Lee – 2:06.59
2013 ODAC Top Time: Caroline Hamp, Washington and Lee – 2:13.00
Event Preview: Washington and Lee, Randolph-Macon, and Notre Dame of Maryland all hold places in the top five spots in the 200-yard backstroke.  W&L’s Caroline Hamp (2:13.00, first) and R-MC’s Kathleen Lampe (2:13.93, second) will vie for the top spot.  Several other Generals join Hamp in the race to the top, while the Gators’ Shannon Berry (2:17.47, fifth) will also make this race an event you will not want to miss.

100-YARD BUTTERFLY
2012 Event Champion:
Caroline Hamp, Washington and Lee – 59.78
2013 ODAC Top Time: Caroline Hamp, Washington and Lee – 1:00.18
Event Preview: W&L’s Caroline Hamp won the race last year and is poised to capture it again this year.  Teammate Meredith Murphy (1:00.65, second) and E&H’s Taylor Guardalabene (1:00.69) will add to the intensity.  A host of other strong swimmers from Randolph-Macon, Notre Dame of Maryland, and Bridgewater will add a competitive edge.

200-YARD BUTTERFLY
2012 Event Champion: Brittany Ross, Washington and Lee - 2:11.84
2013 ODAC Top Time: Brittany Ross, Washington and Lee - 2:14.35
Event Preview: W&L’s Brittany Ross has touched first the past two years and also holds the league’s top mark this season.  The Generals’ Meredith Murphy (2:15.35, second), Lauren Kasoff (2:15.51, third), and Caroline Hamp (2:19.41, fourth) can also be considered among the favorites.  Don’t forget about R-MC’s May McNeil (2:20.81, fifth), E&H’s Nicole Powell (2:24.12, tied for seventh), and BC’s Shannon Myers (2:25.20, 10th). 

INDIVIDUAL BREASTSTROKE EVENTS 

100-YARD BREASTSTROKE
2012 Event Champion:
  Dana Fredericks, Washington and Lee – 1:07.47
2013 ODAC Top Time:  Tyler Herron, Emory & Henry – 1:10.46
Event Preview:
Five schools enter the weekend with top 10 times, which sets this race up to be a thriller.  E&H’s Tyler Herron (1:10.46) currently owns the top spot, but W&L’s Emma Swabb (1:10.63, second) and R-MC’s Kelsey Bagley-Hall (1:11.68, third) look to encroach on her space.  HU’s Claire Webber (1:12.18, fifth) and BC’s Jeni Zeiler (1:13.40, ninth) will also add a competitive twist to this event. 

200-YARD BREASTSTROKE
2012 Event Winner:
Emma Phillips, Greensboro – 2:25.39
2013 ODAC Top Time: Emma Swabb, Greensboro – 2:32.65
Event Preview:  The 200-yard breaststroke has been one of the most competitive races in the league this year with six different schools holding down a spot in the top 10.  Washington and Lee occupies five of the top 10 spots, including the top three with Emma Swabb (2:32.65) in first.  W&L’s Hannah Melkun (2:34.22, second) and Mary Gabe (2:36.15, third), along with R-MC’s Katie Houle (2:37.48, fourth), NDMU’s Emily Jordan (2:37.84, fifth), HU’s Claire Webber (2:39.41, seventh), E&H’s Tyler Herron (2:40.18, eighth), and BC’s Emily Townsend (2:41.34, 10th) will all look to improve their times and find their way into the top spot.
