R-MC's Hedrick, RC's Salva, EMU's Frazier Also Honored

FOREST, Va. --- Roanoke College outfielder Sean Guida and Randolph-Macon College right-hander Colin Selby headline the 2018 All-ODAC Baseball Awards as the pair were named ODAC Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. R-MC mentor Ray Hedrick received ODAC Coach of the Year honors from his peers, while Maroons designated hitter Will Salva earned ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition. Eastern Mennonite University multi-positional athlete Damon Frazier garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete laurels from the conference's sports information directors.

The depth of talent in ODAC baseball is impressive both to the eye-test and when looking at previous award seasons. Just 14 of this year's 40 All-ODAC honorees earned all-league status a season ago. Three of those feature on the All-ODAC First Team. EMU's Frazier is the lone first team honoree from 2017 on the top squad this season, although four 2017 first teamers -- SU's Colin Morse and Luke Nussman, R-MC's Cole Migliorini, and Guilford College's Trevor Denton -- appear on the second team.

Virginia Wesleyan University shortstop Brandon Kussmaul, who earned first team honors in 2016, returns to the league's top squad after an All-ODAC Second Team designation last season. Randolph-Macon second baseman Jeff Butler makes the leap to the first team from the All-ODAC Third Team a season ago.

Guida, a senior from Summit, N.J., has put together a stellar campaign as he and Maroons continue their defense of the 2017 ODAC title. Entering the final tournament weekend, Guida leads the ODAC in overall batting average (.417), slugging percentage (.737), runs (54), hits (65), triples (7), and total bases (115). He is third with 15 doubles and a .521 on-base percentage and fifth with seven homers and 29 walks. Against ODAC foes, Guida led the league in hits (35), triples (3), and total bases (65) while placing second in slugging (.783), doubles (9), and homers (5), third in runs (25) and RBI (23), and fourth in batting (.422) and OBP (.515). Guida has hit safely in 35-of-38 games. He had a 31-game hitting streak thru the middle of the season.

Selby, a junior from Chesapeake, Va., found his form after coming back from injury, which includes the best strikeout totals in the conference. He fanned 70 batters in 54.0 innings against ODAC foes and has set down 105 total batters in 75.1 overall frames entering the final stage of the ODAC Tournament. He and Virginia Wesleyan University ace Jacob Pilarski both went 7-0 in league play and are 10-0 heading to City Stadium in Lynchburg. Selby owns a 2.63 earned run average, including a 1.67 ERA in league play, which led all qualifying pitchers. He registered four 10-plus strikeout games including a season-best 14 punchouts at Washington and Lee in late March.

Hedrick is in the midst of his 14th season guiding the nationally top-ranked Yellow Jackets baseball program. This is the second ODAC top coaching honor he's earned, pairing this with award he received in 2008. R-MC has been at or near the top of all NCAA Division III national polls and has his team not only poised as the #1 seed in the ODAC Tournament but also the top-ranked squad in the South Region, as published by the NCAA Division III baseball committee on May 10. Hedrick led the Yellow Jackets to a 17-3 sprint thru their league slate. R-MC's 31-5-1 overall record marks the second 30-plus win season for the program in the last three years. Hedrick enters the final weekend of the ODAC postseason with a 326-223-5 (.593) career record.

Salva, a freshman from Leesburg, Va., registered the majority of his power numbers at the dish against league opponents. He racked up 23 of his 37 RBI against ODAC foes, ranking third and eighth in the ODAC. He collected four of his nine doubles and four of his five homers against league competition. Salva enters the ODAC tournament with a .344/.389/.527 overall slash line. He opened the season with a 20-game hitting streak that included 10 multi-hit games.

Frazier, a graduate-senior from Waynesboro, Va., is the second straight Royal to earn this honor, following up former outfielder Joe Hall. In the classroom, Frazier put together a 3.83 undergraduate grade point average and maintains a 3.54 graduate GPA as he works towards a Masters of Arts in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in organization leadership. He is a multi-time honoree on the EMU Dean's List as well as the All-ODAC Academic Team. On the field, EMU's top pitcher and hitter spent time at both shortstop and first base in addition to 65.0 overall innings on the hill. He went 2-4 with a 5.12 earned run average, fanning 41 overall. At the dish, Frazier hit .398 with seven homers, 30 RBI and 11 doubles. Five of his homers came in league play along with 20 of his runs driven in. Frazier pairs this honor with a second straight selection to the All-ODAC First Team as the utility player.
