ODAC Football Report | Week 6

FOREST, Va. --- A logjam is forming at the top of the ODAC standings as league football teams advanced through the sixth week of the season. Washington and Lee remained 3-0 in the conference table and improved to 5-1 overall with a non-conference win over The Apprentice School.

Randolph-Macon is one of three squads at 2-1 in ODAC play following a late comeback victory over former league foe Emory & Henry to move to 5-1 overall. Shenandoah improved to 2-1 in conference games and 4-1 in all contests with a win over Guilford. Ferrum evened its ODAC record at 1-1 and improved to 4-1 overall with a late come-from-behind road triumph at Bridgewater. Hampden-Sydney remained 2-1 in conference play as the Tigers were idle on their scheduled bye.

This week's ODAC Offensive and Defense Players of the Week are Shenandoah quarterback Steven Hugney and Randolph-Macon defensive tackle Jace DePriest.

THE GAMES | WEEK 6

FERRUM def. BRIDGEWATER, 14-10| Box Score
Bridgewater led 10-0 into the third quarter and owned a 10-7 lead late-on, but Ferrum receiver Nic Cook caught a quick stop route from Titus Jones and eluded the Eagles defense for a 26-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown with 1:40 to play for a 14-10 road win in Bridgewater on Saturday. BC drove to the Panthers' 34-yard line on its final possession, but an interception by Ja'Kari Williams on fourth down sealed FC's victory. Rah'Quan Payne also intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart an earlier scoring chance, while Billy Higgins led Ferrum's defensive unit with 11 tackles including 0.5 TFLs and a forced fumble. Ray Alexander made two stops behind the line of scrimmage with a sack. Offensively, Jones threw for 180 yards and the TD to Cook. Zac Smiley ran for 44 yards and a touchdown. Daniel Lamb led the Panthers' receivers with five catches for 68 yards. For Bridgewater, Matt Lawton and Kenneth McCray combined to throw for 227 yards. Demetreus Jalepes ran for 93 yards and a two-yard touchdown on 16 carries. Chad Jones caught five passes for 55 yards, while Viante Tucker added 54 yards on six receptions. Defensively, Brett Tharp led the unit with 11 tackles and a sack. Jayden Johnson registered 1.5 sacks including a strip-sack, while Nazeer Jordan had one sack among his eight tackles.

SHENANDOAH def. GUILFORD, 52-25 | Box Score
Shenandoah scored the first 24 points of the contest and never looked back in defeating visiting Guilford, 52-25, in Winchester on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets put up points on six of their first seven possessions on the way to racking up 592 yards of offense. Quarterback Steve Hugney threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns in addition to running for 64 yards and another score. Brant Butler was again the greatest benefactor of Hugney's right arm as the receiver caught five passes for 143 yards and a two scores. Andre Jackson and Austin Ragan also hauled in TD passes. Rashadeen Byrd, Jr., ran for more than 100 yards for the third time in four games as he carried the ball 18 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Kicker Patrick Ritchie registered 10 points in going 7-for-7 on PATs and booting a 27-yard field goal. Defensively, Ben Burgan led the way with 14 tackles including 3.0 for a loss and a half-sack. Mason Caldwell and Jordan Rice registered 2.5 TFLs with Rice chipping in a sack. Ahoyon Boothe made nine stops with a pass defensed and a blocked PAT. Guilford quarterback Bailey Baker threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Tre Alexander caught both scoring throws as part of a five-reception 81-yard receiving day. Baker also ran for a team-best 74 yards, while Paulie Menegay scored on a five-yard run in the third quarter. Receiver Kamari Norman proved adept at returning kickoffs as he sprinted 85 yards for a score to put the Quakers on the board midway through the second quarter. Defensively, Trey Buie led with 11 tackles, while Derek Stokes made seven stops with two passes defensed and an interception. Da'von Edwards registered two TFLs.

RANDOLPH-MACON def. EMORY & HENRY, 34-31 | Box Score
A Brett Heuchan to Joey Hunt three-yard TD pass with 19-seconds to play capped a game-deciding six-play 88-yard drive in Randolph-Macon's 34-31 home victory over former ODAC foe Emory & Henry on Saturday in Ashland. That was the second of two touchdown passes thrown by Heuchan with the first covering 80 yards to David Wallis. Wallis racked up 160 yards on his three catches. Runinng back Justin DeLeon shook off two lost fumbles to run for a career-best 202 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. He leads the ODAC in rushing yards (654), yards per game (109.0), and rushing touchdowns (9). Defensively, Jace DePriest led with eight tackles including a pair for a loss and a forced fumble that led to one of DeLeon's touchdowns. Kyle Ringley broke up three passes and Erik Harris intercepted a pass.

WASHINGTON AND LEE def. APPRENTICE, 42-13 | Box Score
Alex Wertz set the tone for Washington and Lee as he returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to help the Generals cruise to a 42-13 win over Apprentice School in Lexington on Saturday. W&L's rushing attack was again humming with three of its four offensive touchdowns coming via the ground. Jacob Romero led with 81 yards and a score, while Josh Breece added 70 yards and a touchdown. Wertz ran for 66 yards and another TD. Quarterback Stephen Murrin, who rank for 47 yards, threw for 30 additional yards with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Luke Alison. Defensively, Alex Andros led the unit with 12 stops including one for a loss. Jalen Todd made 10 tackles, while Uno Christopher and Robert Harvey registered quarterback sacks. Christopher also forced a fumble which Jens Ames picked up and returned 25 yards for a touchdown.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | Idle
Hampden-Sydney was idle during week six on its scheduled bye. The Tigers return to action on Saturday, October 16, with a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff at former ODAC foe Emory & Henry College.

ODAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | WEEK 6

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jace DePriest | Randolph-Macon | Sr. | Defensive Tackle
DePriest, a senior from Sandston, Va., shed blocks from the interior of Randolph-Macon's defensive line repeatedly in helping lead the Yellow Jackets to a 34-31 victory over Emory & Henry on Saturday. DePriest, who mans one of the defensive tackle spots for R-MC, led the unit with a career-best eight tackles, all solo stops. He got behind the line of scrimmage twice to make tackles that cost E&H six yards of offense. He also forced a fumble that led to one of running back Justin DeLeon's rushing touchdowns for a 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter. For the season, DePriest has registered 24 tackles with 6.0 TFLs and 2.5 quarterback sacks. He has forced two fumbles and recovered one.

FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Steven Hugney | Shenandoah | Fy. | Quarterback
Hugney, a first-year from Fairfax Station, Va., had arguably his best day under center for Shenandoah has he had a hand in five of the first six touchdowns scored by the Hornets in their 52-25 triumph over Guilford. Hugney threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns on 16-of-31 through the air. He also ran for 64 yards on eight carries including a five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He connected with eight different receivers on the day with three players catching touchdown throws. Brant Butler was in on passing TDs that covered 38 and 24 yards. Austin Ragan scored via an 18-yard passing play, while Andre Jackson and Hugney hooked up on a 45-yard touchdown. For the season, Hugney has thrown for 795 yards and eight touchdowns against five interceptions on 62-of-115 (53.9%) passing. He has run for 123 yards and a touchdown.
