  • Hiltunen Award NCAA Scholarship

    Randolph-Macon College women’s basketball student-athlete Amanda Hiltunen has been awarded a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The award is a $7,500 scholarship for academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

    The ODAC split the ODAC-USA South Senior All-Star Basketball Games last weekend at Hampden-Sydney College, marking the third straight year the teams had each won a contest. The ODAC women evened their record at 2-2 while the ODAC men suffered their first loss in four tries.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 23-5 on the season while the Eagles bow out with a 17-11 overall record.

    Bridgewater College kept its repeat chances intact on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles upset top seeded Roanoke College, 69-58, in the first semifinal of the 2009 ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. Bridgewater improves to 17-10 on the season while the Maroons fall to 23-4.

    Behind 28 points and 10 rebounds from Molly Ariail, the Randolph-Macon women’s basketball team scored a 75-55 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College to advance to the championship game of the 2009 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

    Caitlyn Long scored 11 of her 16 points in the first few minutes of the game to stake Roanoke to an early lead on its way to defeating Lynchburg College, 75-48, in the first quarterfinal of the 2009 ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Maroons improve to 23-3 on the season while the Hornets end their campaign with a 9-17 record.

    Bridgewater College took its first step in a repeat bid on Thursday afternoon as the Eagles outlasted Washington and Lee University, 77-65, in the second quarterfinal of the 2009 ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. Bridgewater improves to 16-10 on the season while the Generals end the year with a 14-12 record.

    Amanda Hiltunen hit 4-of-7 three-pointers and came up one assist short of her third 10-assist day of the season as Randolph-Macon College turned back Eastern Mennonite University, 86-68, in the third quarterfinal of the 2009 ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Yellow Jackets improve to 21-5 while the Royals end their season an even .500 at 13-13.

    Randolph-Macon College senior Molly Ariail earned her third major women's basketball award in as many seasons as the Yellow Jackets' center repeated as the ODAC Player of the Year in the league's annual all-conference voting. Roanoke College mentor, Susan Dunagan, was tabbed as the ODAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time. Washington and Lee University guard, Meghan Ingram, was selected as the ODAC Freshman of the Year, and Amanda Hiltunen joins her R-MC teammate as a repeat honoree as she earned the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete award for the second straight season.

    The top 10 finalists for the prestigious Jostens Trophy were announced today by members of the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The club is responsible for the initial review of annual nominations and narrowed the pool to 10 men and 10 women finalists.
