ODAC Football Report | Week 6

FOREST, Va. --- The four teams that won ODAC contests this weekend scored 35 or more points each with a pair eclipsing the 50-point mark. Bridgewater remains unbeaten overall and improved to 3-0 in league play with idle Washington and Lee. Randolph-Macon won for the fifth straight time and stands at 4-0 in the ODAC table. Emory & Henry picked up its third consecutive victory, while Ferrum registered its first league win of the year.

This week's ODAC Offensive and Defense Players of the Week are Bridgewater quarterback Jay Scroggins and cornerback Chase Rosenthal.

THE GAMES | WEEK 6

FERRUM 45, GUILFORD 23 | Box Score
Ferrum put 35 points on the board in the first half and enjoyed more than 35 minutes of possession en route to its first ODAC win of the season over Guilford. Ferrum out-gained Guilford, 558-369, behind a strong outing from quarterback Zack Clifford. He was 16-of-25 thru the air for 238 yards and three touchdown. Rah'Quan Payne, Austin Pennington, and Quentin Wallace hauled in those throws, while Ryan Beidleman collected 71 of his game-high 136 receiving yards on a 71-yard scoring play from Tyler English. Frank Ross ran for 115 yards and a touchdown, while Joe Burris III added one more rushing TD. Christian Johnson led Ferrum's defense with nine stops. For Guilford, receiver Jermaine Russell caught seven passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with 257 all-purpose yards. Quarterback Derrien Phillips threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns, while Desmond McDowell ran for 92 yards on 13 carries. Jordan Smith caught the remaining TD pass. Ty Walker and Khayree Lundy led the defense with eight stops each. Walker added a fumble recovery.

BRIDGEWATER 51, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 7 | Box Score
Bridgewater trailed Hampden-Sydney, 7-6, midway thru the first quarter, but the Eagles posted 45 unanswered points thru the end of the contest to remain unbeaten on the season. BC held H-SC to just 174 yards from scrimmage while racking up 592 yards on its ledger. Quarterback Jay Scroggins continues to keep the offense humming, leading seven touchdown drives include three that ended with his touchdown passes. He went 17-of-24 for 232 yards overall, connecting with Chad Jones, Trey Stephens, and Noah Krogh for scores. Running back Demetreus Jalepes was a dual threat, hauling in four passes for 73 yards and running for 49 yards and a touchdown. Noah Beckley and Matt DeMasi also ran in TDs. Defensively, Chase Rosenthal led with seven tackles and his third interception of the season, second-most in the ODAC. Joe Caron picked off a pass and Isaiah Farmer registered a strip-sack, which H-SC recovered, just before Caron's interception. Receivers Blake Page and Dillon Costello led H-SC with seven catches each with Costello registering the Tigers' touchdown. Cole Becker led the ground game with 45 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, Brad Jeffers and Griffin Davis notched 13 tackles each, while Brendan Weinberg made 12 stops.

RANDOLPH-MACON 35, SHENANDOAH 14 | Box Score
Randolph-Macon won for the fifth straight time powered by 302 yards rushing and more than 36 minutes of possession as well as a defense that forced five Shenandoah turnovers. Jordan Foster racked up 226 all-purpose yards including 100 on the ground on 14 carries that included a pair of touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 55 yards. Tre Frederick tacked on 99 yards on 21 carries, while Presley Egbers added 49 more rushing yards. Egbers also threw for 154 yards. Defensive, De'Angelo Barr, Matthew Vergara, and Erik Harris led with seven tackles each. Harris intercepted a pass and forced two fumbles, once of which he recovered and returned for a touchdown. Calvin Whitehead and Bryan Sullivan also intercepted passes while Sullivan addeda fumble recovery. Casey Stewart led the Shenandoah offense with six catches for 152 yards and a touchdown. Samuel Adams also caught a TD pass. Quarterback Ben Agostino threw for 259 yards and a pair of scores. Defensively, Tyler Williams led with 13 tackles, while Daquan Pridget (12) and Shean Rheams (10) also reached double figures. Nate Hill intercepted a pass, his ODAC-leading fourth of the season.

EMORY & HENRY 56, SOUTHERN VIRGINIA 14 | Box Score
Emory & Henry controlled possession for almost 38 minutes and forced a trio of Southern Virginia turnovers on the way to its third straigth victory. Quarterback Hunter Taylor led E&H's offense with 175 yards and three touchdowns thru the air, each of which went to Derrick Yates. Yates finished with six catches for 125 yards and now leads the ODAC in receiving yards per game (134.6) and touchdowns (10). T.J. Tester put together his best rushing day with 141 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Taylor added a touchdown run, and two-way linebacker Grayson Overstreet added two touchdowns and 40 yards on nine touchdowns while matching Josh Fleenor for the team lead with seven tackles. Zyquis Law intercepted a pass, while Carter Counts and Deondre Chambliss recovered fumbles. Da'von Keith and Donovan Pinnix recorded sacks. Keith leads the ODAC in sacks (8.0) and Pinnix ranks second (5.0). For Southern Virginia, quarterback Davis Pinkston threw for 186 yards and a touchdown while also running for 41 yards and a score. Akiva Wedge led with 68 yards on 19 carries. Josh Newman caught six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Taloa led the defense with 11 tackles and a pair of pass breakups. Justin Mitchell intercepted a pass. Jaxon Reyos notched a quarterback sack.

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chase Rosenthal | Brigewater | Jr. | Cornerback
Rosenthal, a junior from Chesapeake, Va,. earns his second weekly award of the season after helping the Eagles' defense return from its bye week in style with a 51-7 victory at Hampden-Sydney. Bridgewater held the Tigers to just 176 yards from scrimmage at 2.9 yards per play in pitching a shutout for more than 52 minutes of game time after giving up a first quarter score. BC also forced a pair of turnovers, which Rosenthal played a part. Late in the first quarter, Bridgewater had just gone ahead, 13-7, and on the next offensive play by Hampden-Sydney, Rosenthal returned the ball to BC by intercepting a deep pass at the Eagles' 37-yard line. Rosenthal went on to lead Bridgewater in tackles with seven, all of which were solo stops. The interception was his third of the season, which sits second in the ODAC. He has 25 tackles including 22 solo stops.

FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jay Scroggins | Bridgewater | Sr. | Quarterback
Scroggins, a senior from Fredericksburg, Va., continued his strong campaign of turnover-free football for the Eagles. Scroggins led Bridgewater to seven touchdowns in nine drives on offense, paving the way for a 51-7 road victory. He remained efficient despite coming off a bye week, completing 17-of-24 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring throws went to Trey Stephens, Noah Krogh, and Chad Jones. He spread the ball around to nine different receivers with five completions of 20 or more yards. For the season, Scroggins leads the ODAC in completion percentage (70.0%), touchdowns (13), and passing efficiency (190.5). He has not thrown an interception since his pass attempt in the second-to-last game of the 2018 season, which covers 132 pass attempts. He also has not fumbled this season.
