  • ODAC Announces Berkley and Jopson Award Winners
    June 03, 2020
    One record increases and another begins as the ODAC Board of Directors handed out the league's highest individual honors in naming the winners of the Majorie Berkley and Harry G. "Doc" Jopson Awards. Washington and Lee University swimmer Emily Hageboeck earned Berkley Award recognition, while University of Lynchburg runner Shawn Gmurek collected Jopson Award laurels. Hageboeck is the 11th winner of the Berkley Award from W&L, furthering the Generals conference record. Eastern Mennonite University student-athletes have won the second-most honors at six. For Gmurek, the list is brand new as he is the first Hornet from Lynchburg to claim the Jopson Award. He does continue an interesting trend as a cross country or track & field athlete has collected Berkley and/or Jopson distinction each of the past seven years dating back to 2014.

    We chatted with Washington and Lee standout swimming student-athlete Emily Hageboeck, who won the ODAC's Marjorie Berkley Award as the top senior scholar-athlete in the conference. In addition to being a 14-time All-American and 17-time ODAC event-winner, Hageboeck was extremely active on campus and starred in the classroom.

    Washington and Lee completed a banner regular season that included dual ODAC championships for the sixth straight season and culminated in eight stars qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships. However, they did not get a chance to compete before the NCAA postseason was canceled. This feature by Washington and Lee's athletic communications department celebrates the accomplishments of those athletes.
  • Washington and Lee Sweeps ODAC Swimming Titles for Sixth Straight Season

    Washington and Lee University won 28 total events including 17-of-18 possible disciplines on the women's ledger to help the Generals sweep the ODAC Women's and Men's Swimming Championships for a sixth straight season. W&L swimmers eclipsed the NCAA "B" Cut standard in an event 17 times over the four days of competition at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

    The regular season for swimming is all but concluded with the championship just two weeks away. While the ODAC swimmers start their tapers, the league's basketball teams are gearing up for their stretch run as teams vie for seeding for the conference tournament at the end of February.   • ODAC Men's Swimming Poll | Washington and Lee Tabbed at the Top

    The second installment of the ODAC Men's Swimming Preseason Poll has a familiar feel with five-time league champion Washington and Lee University topping the survey entering the 2019-20 campaign. The Generals secured the top position with 100 points including 10 first place votes. Roanoke College picked up the remaining top nod on the way to 88 markers and the second spot. Randolph-Macon College rounds out the top-three with 85 tallies.

    Washington and Lee University, fresh off capturing its 12th straight conference championship, enters the 2019-20 campaign as the favorite to add to its stable of team trophies as the Generals were picked atop the ODAC Women's Swimming Preseason Poll. W&L earned 144 points and 12 first place votes to top the chart, while Roanoke College moves to its highest position in the program's history in second position with 128 points. Randolph-Macon College is close on the Maroons' heels with 127 markings, including the remaining first place consideration.
